  1. Nah, I actually graduated from college a few years ago without a major in music (only minored in it), which is why I went back to school for it. I'm currently in my last semester of my M.A. in music history. And now onward to a PhD if I get in! Even just thinking about the midwest and the East Coast makes me shiver. I like looking at snow, but only pictures of it online. Californians are so spoiled in terms of weather and nature. Lol. Makes it hard to leave, but I'm sure the midwest and the East Coast are nice in their own way.
  2. I've applied to 9, some of which I've applied to just cause they were close to home and I didn't want to leave my community here. Looking back, I wonder if I should have just applied to schools that were more fitting instead + around 12 schools in total. Wish I could have both of research fit and location, but I guess some things require sacrifice, even people.
  3. It's so hard to predict. I'm thinking more like by the end of the month (unless I hear back from NYU interview earlier). Crossing all fingers, toes, eyes, and anything else I can right now, lol. Now I wish I had cast a wider net and applied to more schools... Oh wells, too late now!
  4. None for me. ? Congrats! Maybe they didn't like the people they interviewed the first round, and you were on some unofficial waitlist. Good luck!
  5. I'm in the same boat, 3 rejections and 3 implied, so I can commiserate with you. Waiting to hear back from 4, one of which I interviewed with last Friday (NYU). The interview went well, but then again that seems to be no indicator of success. I've applied to a couple places in state, but schools in California seem to announce results later than other states (at least according to the results page). One of them was a backup for me, but you're right. It'd be funny if God's calling was for me to go there, and I have no choice but to follow His will. I guess it'd be ok to be close to home even if it wasn't where I wanted to go But ultimately, I guess I should be grateful and honored to go anywhere (I feel you. I'm seriously afraid of getting rejected everywhere at this point...).
  6. O nooo I didn't get it either... and I thought my interview went alright. It was my top choice. Now time to be sad ??
  7. @musician94 haha no, Chicago wasn't my top choice but just thought it was weird. I trust that the admissions committees at each school have a good idea of who'd be good for their program. Thanks for the encouragement! Good luck to you!
  8. I didn't get an email from Chicago either... Weird. I wonder how "fit" is determined anyways. Congrats everyone on acceptances!
  9. It's the season of academic thrills... ??
  10. Great, so all of us are rejects ? lol
  11. From my vague recollection of browsing the results page a while back, I'm pretty sure they do (or at least have done so in the past). But I didn't hear anything from them either.
  12. NYU musicology interview invites sent out this morning
  13. Right. I think too many people confuse musicology with music history. Music history and theory are different subdisciplines... But music theory/analysis is inherently a part of musicology.
  14. What I meant by musicology encompassing music theory was not to undermine theory in any way. I was just trying to express, however poorly, that musicology approaches music from a multi-dimensional view. That it doesn't detract from music theory or composition, or any other fields for that matter, but rather adds more sides to them... If that makes sense... (Sorry once again for this tangent. It's just a pet peeve of mine when people have a two dimensional view of musicology.)
  15. Hmm I like to think of music as a diamond - a hidden gem, if you will, since it is not treasured by all. But those who do see it all have a different way of looking at things, each through their own dimension based on idiosyncratic interests and skills. So there's no doubt as to their distinction. But ultimately, they're just different sides to the same object of music. In a sense, none of the various subfields are studying anything related to music because all views are partial. We're all limited. But to leave out any side would be detrimental to music as a whole. Not only are they separate but equal; they are in fact one. (Sorry for the long metaphorical post... Didn't mean to get carried away... You know how musicologists can get ?)
  16. That sounds like a definition of musicology that leaves out music theory, as opposed to an encompassing one that integrates both...
  17. Sounds lactose intolerant? ? haha jk. It's alright. I can relate. It's hard for anyone to get a good impression of us and vice versa, in such a short time.
  18. Yeah I heard about that. I wonder why the difference in time allotted to musicology students...
  19. I only got asked like 5 questions, the last of which was asked after all of mine. So yes, it was very short, lol. Glad I'm not the only one! I had anxiously prepared to defend my research, but thank God I didn't have to do that. I feel like it would be hard to get a feel for what a program would be like without meeting the professors. Certainly, research fit is important, but so are people! Especially if it involves leaving the people at home behind.
  20. According to the results page, previous years had gotten their results from Chicago by now. But I didn't hear anything. So unless they're running late, I guess I'm not accepted, haha (tho that email did say mid-Feb). To be honest tho, I really liked the faculty members I met during my Eastman interview. So Eastman would have to be my top choice now. It's hard to find people you connect with like that, not just as scholars but as people too. My semester's off to a slow start because I'm done with all classes. Only have to work on my thesis. There are pros and cons having to rely on self-discipline alone, but I suppose it's good preparation before a PhD... Fourteen hour flights?!? Yikes, time to watch a lot of movies (or sleep if you can)!
  21. Congrats! Just wondering what are the proper etiquettes for follow up after interviews? I want to express gratitude but not seem too pushy?
  22. For musicology? Or which discipline?
  23. Woah, thank you for your post. After seeing your post, I checked my email again... and lo and behold, found an interview invite for the musicology PhD at Eastman, the only school I applied to from the 3 you mentioned!
  24. I'm teaching as usual and working on finishing up my master's thesis... I'm also withering away to nothingness at the same time...
  25. Ah yes, though I was more interested in working with Dr. Holly Watkins if I were to go to Eastman (Tho I like the aesthetics of French music, I prefer the German school of thought in philosophy). It seems our research focus differ, but our approaches to music are quite similar! It's hard to find programs that cater to various interests, but Chicago does seem to be one of the best. And yessss, can't wait for things to start moving! I don't like this waiting, lol.
