Congratulations on your accomplishment! We will be reaching out to you shortly about your keynote speaker position for the upcoming ~December Gang~ conference!
Thank you everyone! This is clearly a bigger accomplishment than getting the NDSEG fellowship!! I'm truly humbled!

Did you receive an initial email when you submitted, and then this email on top of that?
I only received one email. I'm worried now that my app wasn't sent thru the eval process, but on the website portal it reads "under evaluation." I'm going to email admin after the holiday.
Let me know if you hear anything. I also did not receive anything after the initial email!

- UC Berkeley - UCSF Bioengineering
I'm interested in synthetic biology, don't really have any experience in this area though.
My PI (who's on the admissions committee for many years) said that international students are harder, but not significantly if you studied in the US. There's less funding for internationals but most schools do reserve some funding for internationals. He says that the LOR is the most important part, and they don't really pay very much attention to the personal statement (it's more for sanity check that you're a nice person and know what you're getting in for) so I shouldn't stress about it .
Regarding funding for specific programs for international applicants, different biology departments seem to have varying amount of funding for internationals. Sometimes the biomedical program can only fund 1 international student every year, but another sister program (like bioengineering) can fund many internationals, even as you can probably work for the same PIs in the end. I emailed a few schools to check on their funding for international applicants before I applied.
From my experience, if you are applying to bioengineering programs, they want you to have an undergraduate degree in engineering or a significant background in engineering. I did biology undergrad and a master's in biomedical engineering, and I was rejected from all of the bioengineering programs I applied to and accepted into all of the biomedical science programs I applied to. If I were you, I would try to emphasize your knowledge of engineering in the application to prove you are qualified since I see you do not come from an engineering background. Please contact me if you have any other questions!

At the end of the day, the most important part of a PhD is the research. When you apply to jobs or faculty positions following your PhD, people will ask what research you did because that will ultimately determine your future. Although life outside of graduate school is important, the majority of your hours will be spent in lab.
Personally, I am choosing attending UCSD because I felt like the research interests of the faculty aligned well with my interests, I really connected with all of the people I met in the program, and I love San Diego. I don't know too much about JH, so it is hard for me to compare the two. Good luck deciding!

Also, did they tell you the exact dates or 'mid' February? I am worried that if I end up getting off the waitlist (oh God I hope so!) I won't be able to attend anyway since I have Duke and Columbia on Feb 10-17 (do not have any interviews on the week of Feb 18-24th though).
They didn't say what the weekends were, they just mentioned that some people from the first interview session may get waitlisted until they bring in the second group of people. I'm not sure if they do this for all programs, but it seems like they do for PBSB, Pharma, BCMB, IMP, and Neuro. Hope this helps!

For people waiting on Weill Cornell, there is hope. They mentioned another interview weekend in mid-Feb that they save some acceptances for!

Has anyone heard from UW Seattle's BioE program?

Hey! How many interview weekends do they have and when are they? I love their program but I have interviews pretty much all February, so I am scared that if I end up getting off the waitlist I won't be able to attend (also, do you know if realistically there's any chance of getting off the waitlist?). I applied for Pharmacology. Thanks!
I have no idea for Pharmacology, I was invited to interview for Physiology, Biophysics & Systems Biology Program (PBSB). The only interview option for this program is Wednesday, January 23 through Friday, January 25. I would ask them where you are on the waitlist if I were you, I assume it depends on the program.

Does anyone know if NYU or Weill Cornell are done sending interviews?
For Weill, it seems like if you aren't already on the waitlist, you likely will not get an interview. Also, the interview days are in less than a week. Best of luck with all of your other interviews and acceptances!!

Umm two business days till the cornell interview and they havent sent me who I'm interviewing with. Anyone else in the same spot?
From my understanding, they are giving us the interview list the day we check in. I have heard some schools do this so people don't have too much time to prep. But I'm also in the same position

Has anyone heard back from Stanford Bioscience's Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine program?

I'm confused on the google sheet why people are putting 12/24 as no update since submission. I'm pretty sure the last day for submission was 12/6?
