  1. Lol you'll be having way too much fun to worry!
  2. Right now I'm broadly interested in wealth inequality and social stratification, particularly in education and the workforce.
  3. You as well! What are you studying at NYU (if you care to share)?
  4. Friday is here... What are y'all doing to distract yourselves today/this weekend?
  5. That's really exciting, congrats on your success so far! I agree, rankings matter to some extent, but those universities you applied to are ultimately all great places to learn. You can be just as good of a sociologist whether you go to Berkeley or Boulder. That's what I don't really understand about how they rank sociology programs... like I've had plenty of professors who had great grad school experiences at lower ranked schools. Just thinking out loud. What are your research interests (if you want to share)? I really considered applying to UMass because they have some of the best scholars in the sociology of labor, which is a big interest for me. But ultimately I was already applying to way too many schools, so I cut it out. Also my partner didn't want to live in Amherst lol
  6. Dang, I hope your transition goes smoothly! And congratulations on your acceptances! How do you feel about the two you've gotten into?
  7. You're right. On average most people take longer than five years. But the grad student at UCLA I spoke to made it seem like virtually no one finishes in five years. Whereas I think at a school like Duke or Northwestern, there's less competition for resources and the cohorts are smaller, so it's harder to fall through the cracks. This is all just based on my impressions from conversations with random grad students though. While we're on the topic, how do you guys feel about potentially taking 7 to 8 years to finish? I feel like I would be so demoralized and sad after making no money for that long lol plus my partner will probably be saying tick tock, time to buy a house, etc. It just seems so long, so that's why it's important for me to finish in five if possible.
  8. Oh dear, I didn't mean to come off that way! I just mean out of 12 I've only gotten into 2 so far but still have so many left, so who knows what could happen!
  9. Let's kill some time while we anxiously await responses... What are everyone's top choices, and why? I'm really interested in Northwestern because that's where I'm from and they have a strong emphasis on qualitative methods, which isn't as common in the top 10-15 programs. I've also been told that it's a smaller and more tight-knit department, which appeals to me. I also was really interested in Duke because they have a strong emphasis on economic sociology / wealth inequality, but sadly it just wasn't in the cards. And then my long-shots are of course Harvard, Michigan, and Stanford lol So far I've only been admitted to UCLA and UT Austin. Does anyone know much about what the culture of these departments is like or any other information to share about how they compare? I am a bit apprehensive about them because I want to graduate as quickly as possible, and I've heard it can take six or seven years to finish at these two.
  10. Well, that's good to know lol bye Columbia
  11. I would be kinda surprised if someone actually went out of their way to intentionally troll the results, but I have seen some results from the past with some people who got rejected saying "They told me they've sent out all acceptances" or something like that, and then a few days later someone else will post in the results being like, "That person was lying, I just got in," stuff to that effect. So maybe it's just misinformation? I agree that (assuming the Columbia posts are real) most of us on this thread are constantly refreshing this page, the results, and our emails, and then we instantly post on here when we get our results. But not necessarily everyone uses the site the same way. Also, all of this is completely unpredictable and we really have nothing but previous years to go off of. And so far, that's seemed pretty far off from what we're seeing this year...
  12. Right, but it still strikes me as odd that we have two phone acceptances and then this email from five days ago, but nothing else. Would expect to have some more phone or email acceptances by now, but then again we have no idea how they make decisions about when/how to inform people about their application status.
  13. Sometimes they do include that info. But it looks like two other accepted Columbia applicants found out by phone according to the results, so I am a little suspicious of this entry.
  14. I haven't heard anything from them.
  15. Smh... not feeling it.
  16. Duke sent me an email telling me to check the portal, but it still says Decision Not Ready!!! Quite irksome. Edit: JK I didn't get in!
  17. Think positive thoughts y'all! Lots of us haven't heard back from our fave schools yet. I have only heard from two of the 12 schools I applied to. But maybe today will bring some exciting surprises. If not, this will all be over by March... Good vibes all around.
  18. Hi, I posted that after speaking I believe two Fridays ago with a current grad student who was on the admissions committee, but don't have any additional info about it. Seemed like they were moving pretty fast on them though.
  19. I don't think they do interviews, based on the last couple years of results.
  20. Omg first Duke posting is up on the results. Haven't gotten an email yet and don't see anything on the portal...
  21. Same lol devastating. We got a couple more hours I guess...
  22. Did you check the online portal for UT Austin? They sent out an email to some people the other day saying a decision has been posted to their accounts.
  23. I'm on Eastern time, so for California schools I'm like omg I have to wait until 8:30pm....
