  1. Ah sorry for some reason I misinterpreted your post. Go ahead and take the recommendation from your boss :) Even if you don't get a recc from volunteer, you'll have it listed somewhere on your application. Your strengths doesn't necessarily have to be directly SLP-related - most applicants don't have that anyway. Play to your strengths and tell your boss what you feel you've learned that could help as a future SLP, and maybe they'll consider that when they write your recommendation. Good luck!

  2. I would say the SLP. The adcom aren't looking for work experience in of itself, they want to know what you got out of it. If the boss is the person who would know that best, then get it from them... but most likely it's the SLP who you have interacted with the most and learned the most from.

  3. Heard back from SDSU yesterday, got off the waitlist! And now I'm going crazy because I'm rethinking my decision and I have one day to reply with my answer.

UW - Awesome school, would love to study in the MedSLP program, great city, offered one in four scholarships (albeit very small) and a possible TA position

SDSU - A fraction of the UW cost, best school in CA, great location as well, being with the boyfriend and being able to get married sooner.

I know this is a very general outline of my situation, but any thoughts? I'm not too interested in research, but I understand the value of a highly ranked school, especially one like UW. I spoke with Dr. Barlow earlier this morning and got some more info about the program since I barely knew anything about it... based on what she said, it looks like a solid program as well.

Thought all the worrying/anxiety was over, but I guess not :(

  4. For those of us that are waiting, it seems like a lot of the schools are letting out acceptance notifications first and giving them until the April 15th deadline for their response, and THEN they contact the rest of the applicants once more spaces open up. While this is pretty convenient for them, it's pretty terrible for us that are still waiting for SOME kind of response. This is what waitlists are for. <_< UMass Amherst is doing this and CSU Fullerton as well (spoke with both of them today).

  5. Blergh to CSUN! It's not just unfair to us students but also seems weird to do to themselves - don't they want "the best" (I put that in quotes cause loads of awesome people are still rejected) people to go there?? I guess they have enough applicants they can afford to have them go elsewhere because they didn't get a reply in time. I have to put a $400 deposit down for SDSU by the 15th as well.

I don't know much about LA other than they rejected me this morning! But I've heard general good things. It would be wise to ask them how difficult it is for students to get the classes they need to graduate on time. It seems like some CSU's really have an issue with that, even on the grad level. Though I think being in a cohort (everyone taking their classes together) reduces that risk - I don't know if LA does it that way or not. Do they require a deposit? Is CSUN worth losing that money?

Are you considering CSUN over SDSU? If so, do you mind sharing why?

  6. Thank you guys! And congrats, FutureSLP8 on your interview!.

I am really in between CSUF and CSULB at this point. If I ever hear from CSUN or my waitlisted schools, it will be a different story-- Per my POI, CSUF would be great. However, CSULB has a VA hospital right next to the school and I've heard VA hospitals are an excellent training ground for training health professionals. Has anyone from Long Beach heard anything about working there?

Also, is it true that you don't receive any grants in grad school? That you only receive financial aid in the form of loans? btw, I've already submitted my FAFSA.

You probably won't be seeing many grants for grad school, especially if it's for a CSU. Loans and assistantships are pretty much it. :(

  7. I'm considering UW much more seriously now even despite the cost and no funding. I'm still confused about a couple things, and even though I should probably ask the department directly, I'm gonna throw them out here in case others are wondering the same:

    1. I'm kinda confused about the deposit. Is it $500 to the University, or that AND another $500 to PCE?
    2. For the internship, they said something about having affiliation agreements with clinical facilities in Washington and nationally... does this mean we get to go out of state to complete our internship? Probably not though, because there's still a class we'd have to take at the same time... unless it's a web course.
    3. Noticed there's no craniofacial class listed in the curriculum. I'm really interested in this area, so I'm hoping it's under another course with a different name. Otherwise I'd think the Med track a bit incomplete

Other than that... started looking up Craigslist postings and neighborhoods. I'm finally letting myself get over the fact that I'll need to take out loans for pretty much the whole thing, and looking forward to the fact that I'd be getting top-notch education and studying in a concentrated area I'm really interested in. Still not 100% as my other school results haven't come in, but my heart's leaning towards Seattle at the moment :)

  8. First of all, congrats! Those are some pretty competitive schools you got into :)

It's hard to get anything out of the CSU departments, but from what I do know, there's not too much of a medical emphasis in any of those schools. That said, it's not difficult to get a job or become more interested in the neuro aspect with a more generalized program. If you're interested in getting your PhD, then taking up a master's thesis or independent study would be a great way to do this. I went to CSUF for my postbacc, and Dr. Li and Dr. Tom are both great profs to work with in that area. I'm not too sure about Long Beach, but the few interactions I had with them left me feeling kinda badly towards the program. The department's SUPER competitive and the admin people were unhelpful, but of course that might not have anything to do with the program itself. LA, I know nothing about, but I've heard that it's more of an emphasis towards the school settings, which is the typical case for most CSUs.

If you really want to get down to the nitty gritty, call and/or visit and have a chat with the professors. I see you're from LA, so visiting all three isn't impossible. Try to see how your interests would match up with the school and you'll get a better lead of where you'll want to go. It's unlikely that the department will set this kind of thing up for you, so you'll have to do some stalking - catch a prof right after their class or during office hours or shoot them an email directly to see when you could come in. Maybe you could talk to some of the students while waiting around in the department office. Otherwise, it'll probably just come down to location.

    Good luck!

  9. Anyone have an idea of when Chapman will let the rest of us know!? It's the last school that I am waiting to hear back from...I'm pretty sure I won't get in but I'd just like to know already. Thanks! <3

I've heard back from them already, but from what I hear they're STILL doing interviews up til April 15th. It seems like they're doing a kind of rolling admissions, which I can imagine makes an already difficult process even more anxiety-inducing. Don't give up hope!

CSULA sent me an acceptance letter on Monday, so they got them out earlier than mid-April. They want an answer April 15.

I'm at CSUN for pre-CDS program and they told us we should hear week of April 2-7, it's their Spring Break. Grad. students have told me they send an email.

    HTH

Thanks for the info! I saw on the results board that people have been getting responses, which is great. Makes much more sense instead of having them sent mid-April and requiring applicants to decide by then too.

  10. So, since things aren't looking so good for me (rejected at 5 out of the 6 schools I've applied to, waiting on one) I've decided that I need to start working on my next plan of action.

Does anyone know of which schools may have a late admission? I've heard rumors of June and July deadlines. Also, which schools/programs have spring admissions? I am not restricted to a certain geographic area. Schools that accept lower GPAs and GRE scores a plus.

It's not a June/July deadline, but George Washington University emailed me a couple weeks ago saying they extended their deadline to April 15th.

Also, I know Cal State Fullerton has spring admissions.

  11. Does anyone have any more information about the March 12 interviews at San Francisco State?

I second the SFSU interviews on March 12....were those for in-state residents? Any info would be appreciated :)

I interviewed on the 12th at SF. It was a writing sample and a 20 minute interview with 2 faculty members. There were at least two groups taking the writing sample (maybe 50-60 people total?) and it looked the first group may have been their own students (they seemed to all know each other and dressed very casually...) and we were all fairly dressed up in the second group and no one really knew each other... everyone I spoke with from the second group was from California though. Good luck!!

They had interviews? Didn't know about that. JoH are you near SF?

  12. Don't know about the numbers but I can imagine that out of state tuition might be a deciding factor, particularly if people were accepted to in-state programs or other programs with funding. Did you check the results board to see if people got off the waitlist in previous years?

Yup, looks like there were about 2 or 3 people who said they got off the waitlist. I imagine not too many people turn down an offer from them, considering it's a great school AND with cheaper tuition. :(

I'm probably going to decline SDSU and attend UT Austin instead, hopefully that opens up a spot for whoever is on the wl. I'm a CSU student too, and I'm really tired of the tuition increase and I'm quite interested in the labs offered at UTA. BTW, do you know what's going on with TC? They are really slow according to what they initially promised, but someone from the TC Facebook group called the department, we're probably going to hear back in early April...=(

I feel very disappointed about all three rejections from the medical programs, even though I keep telling myself, it's nothing about where you go to school but how you learn/practice as a future clinician... I would love to work in the hospital/rehab, but I'm afraid I wouldn't be as prepared as other SLPs who got in medical SLP programs. Do you guys know does it really make a difference whether you attended an program specialized in bilingual education or medical rehabilitation?

Also if you attended the grad school elsewhere, as long as you passed the praxis and have your master degree and CFY, you should be able to apply for license in every state right? I want to come back and practice in CA.

Anyone else on the same boat?

Haha I don't know what my position on the waitlist is, but thank you! I'm looking towards medical settings as well, and I'm slowly coming to accept letting go of UW's MedSLP and going to a state school. Like SLP-Allie said, there are plenty of people who go to non-med focused programs and they end up in hospitals doing just fine. It's more of a pride issue for me but I'll have to learn how to kill it for the sake of reality :P Btw, I also saw that super-long post in the TC Facebook group - looks like we're gonna have to wait a bit more.

  13. Ouch, got my rejection letter in the mail from Vandy today. Can't win them all I guess :P I'm pretty confident I'll be going to UW in the Fall, anyone else leaning that way at this point? I'd love to connect with some future classmates before September :)

Still haven't heard back from most of my schools yet, but as of now my heart is leaning pretty strongly towards UW. I'm sure once I get notifications from the state schools I might think differently, but as of now I'm already looking up places to live on Craigslist :P
