Hello,
I've applied to 4 California State schools:
CSU EB
CSU Fullerton
CSU LA
San Jose State
I am anxiously waiting to hear back from any of these schools. My feeling is that it won't be for another month or so.
Has anyone heard from these school thus far?
Thanks!
As Fullerton extended their deadline to March 1st, I doubt we'd be hearing back from them until mid-April. LA said they'd start mailing out their decisions around mid-April as well. I didn't apply to SJSU and and East Bay so I'm not sure about those... Good luck to you!
-
Decided not to apply for George Washington last minute and they just emailed me sayin I could still apply by April 15th if I wanted to.... Find that kinda odd since there's so many people waitlisted and since most decision deadlines are April 15th

Chapman changed my status to "decision mailed," eeek!

I know you didn't ask me this but I'm going to respond anyways haha.
It all depends on where you want to live and where your placements are. I was glad that I had a car despite not using it all that much. I lived walking distance to UW and was two - five blocks away from the grocery store, church, school and the gym. However it was nice to have a car when I needed to go on a big shopping trip or to a friends apartment in the evening (the bus in the evening can be a little sketch). I was also glad I had it when I was done with my post bacc and was working at a pre-school (I had covered secure parking at work and school though so that helped). I also imagine that it is helpful when you have placements off of UWs campus as it will allow for you to have more options when it comes to placements as you will not be restricted to places where you can get to and from easily on the bus.
However, parking is expensive and a pain in the butt. Especially downtown and around UW. Bussing to and from school is most likely the better option. If you were to live bussing/walking/biking distance to UW and everything else you may need (grocery stores, pharmacy etc) I would say you probably don't need a car BUT you should invest in a zipcar membership. There are a ton of zipcar lots in Seattle. I have never used zipcar but it was recommended to me by one of the professors I spoke to at an open house I went to (I have a car but if I end up in Boston or NY don't intend on taking it with me). That way you won't be limited in terms of you placement options. While public transport in Seattle is certainly better than it is in LA it is no where near as far reaching or efficient as Boston, NY, London etc. Another option is to not take a car the first semester or two (when you will have on campus placements) and then either lease or bring up your car once you start doing off campus placements.
To be honest with you, neither option is perfect and you kind of have to suss out the situation once you know where you will be living. Sorry this wasn't a yes or no answer...
If you live close enough to campus I really don't think you'll need a car. I needed one because I had to commute to Everette everyday to work (30 miles each way). I'm also the type of person that likes to go exploring a lot, so I really enjoyed having a car to get around the area (and to IKEA!) It would definitely eliminate the whole parking dilemma and the high gas prices up there if you didn't have one though.
Thanks guys! Helps a lot. I was thinking about sticking it out the first year and bringing it for when I have off-site placements as well.
For those who heard back from Teachers College, did you get an email or was it just on your NextStep?

Just spoke with them ... "we are trying to get them out before our spring break, which starts next week, so we are trying to get them out this week. If the results are not out this week they will not be posted until after the break"
Thanks!! Sure hope we hear from them this week.

I lived in Seattle for a little while right next to the UW campus. Although it was more expensive than what I was used to coming from Arizona, it wasn't completely unaffordable. I payed a little over 500 a month to share a two bedroom apartment with a roommate that was a short walk from campus. The apartment wasn't anything nice, but it was safe, and clean enough. When I first got there I subleased in a basement apartment of a huge house. The rooms were absolutely tiny, and there were 4 people living down there. Again though, it was clean and safe and minimally expensive. If you live that close to campus you won't even have to worry about traffic. My biggest problem was parking! If you plan on living further away though, then definitely beware of the traffic! UW is right next to downtown, so if you need to get in during rush hour it will take you a while. The public transportation there was great though. Busses get to bypass all the traffic, so definitely a smart choice if you are commuting. Beyond that the city is absolutely amazing! And the campus is beautiful. The only reason I moved was because I couldn't stand the weather, but if your already from Portland I'm sure you won't have a problem
Would you recommend bringing a car? Or can you survive on public transportation alone?

I should have been more clear. I can only speak for the Cal State system. I didn't mean to cause you concern. I did both my undergrad and post-bac work at a Cal State, and also did some grad work at a Cal State. I have seen things change drastically in the Cal State system from 2002 to now.
I have zero experience with SDSU, so please don't take my comments to reflect on that school. The little I know about SDSU tells me that it is in a far better position than any of the Cal States. Sorry to be unclear.
San Diego State University is part of the CSU system.

What is your top choice school? I was rejected from San Diego yesterday
No worries, I'm sure good news will come your way soon!
I'm not really sure what my top choice is, my thoughts while applying was that I'd be happy if I got into any school at all! I'm ecstatic about U of W, but like everyone else, I'm caught whether I should spend the extra tens of thousands versus a cheaper in-state school. How about you?
-
Has someone not heard back from SDSU? I've checked my status online and it still says it's under review.
I think they're sending it through email. I've heard back and my online status says the same as yours.
-
Waitlisted at SDSU.... Better than a rejection I guess :/

Did anyone's Washington acceptance email mention anything about funding?
Nope, it's just a very general acceptance email. Based on what people have said, I'm really not expecting anything
-
For the people who did get emails from Washington, what did they say? Did they just direct you to the website (which website?)
I just got the email a couple minutes ago with the decision and further instructions on how to respond. Deadline to respond is April 15th... CSULA's definitely going to complicate things with them sending out their decisions mid-April :\
-
DAHHHH!! My first acceptance! MedSLP at UW
I am so shocked and happy, I really applied "just cuz..." Congrats to everyone else who got in!!
Now hopefully they'll give me some funding as well, hehe.

I'm very interested in dysphagia and voice disorders. I really would love to be trained in FEES down the line.
Same here, and I'm also interested in working with cleft lip/palate... Of course, this might change while I'm in grad school.

Letter from Chapman reminding me to do my FAFSA. Bleh.
-
I called SFSU earlier today, they said the results would come out "in a couple of weeks." How vague can they be? I definitely feel ya.

Mid-April! What the heck, CSULA?
I know, right? But the lady I talked to on the phone was super sweet... and their deadline WAS one of the later ones (2/15). I guess they need two months to make their decision.
To add to your list, I called UMass Amherst yesterday and they said "will go out mid march" so hopefully there's news sooooooon.
Thanks!
And for those applying to CSU Fullerton... did you know about the application status document on the website?? Kitselman updates it every day so you can check what materials they've received. Not much information I know, but you can see there's 430 applicants.

Couldn't stand it, called a couple of those oh-so-elusive CSUs today.
- SFSU: "within a couple of weeks"
- CSUN: "end of March, early April"
- CSULA: will go out by mail starting mid-April
- SDSU: "within a week," bless your soul!!
Couldn't reach CSUF, I'll try again later.
- SFSU: "within a couple of weeks"

what gives

Haha I like this thread.
I WILL get accepted! Good vibes all around

I know it doesn't make the situation sound any better, but my boyfriend and I will be doing long-distance for the two years and all three of my bosses (who are SLPs) did long distance during grad school as well (one was with her then boyfriend, now husband, one was engaged, the other was married). It sucks but it can definitely be done. Hang in there!
Worrying about this as well... sigh
-
Congrats to those who are going to grad schools!!
This surely is going to become a roller coaster month isn't it?
Where did you guys get the information that UW will notify students after 4 weeks? I've been checking my Med SLP program and the status page indicated:
"Expected Decision Date: The program to which you applied expects to make their admissions decisions by mid March."
Apparently, every school is like: MID MARCH.

Anxiously awaiting their decision as well. My status says "decision mailed" on 3/12 but still nothing! I live about half an hour away from Chapman so I thought it would be here by today... Hoping it'll come tomorrow.
On another note, wasn't Teachers College supposed to have their decisions by today? Dahhh
