  1. Congratulations! The weather is the BEST in SD! Especially for a sun-lover like me. XD According to my own research during the application season, I definitely see the difference between UW's medical program in the way its coursework was designed. I feel if you were determined to work in the medical field, it will prepare you better with the medical network. SDSU clinical coordinator emailed me that they do offer medical placement, but I still see a heavy emphasis on the bilingual specialization not really the medical SLP. But I'm confident you will shine no matter where you go. Keep us posted. =]
  2. Hi jkathleen, I just emailed my decision to attend UT Austin this fall. This is what I received about RA/TA according to the graduate program coordinator: Current TA salary rates for 2011-12 (rates have yet to post for 2012-13 academic year): MA students may receive an assignment for a 10 hr. position as a TA (Teaching Assistant) @ $2,375 per semester. Students who are assigned such positions will receive a (TBA) Tuition Benefit Assistance of $1,892 from the Graduate School. Students assigned a position as a RA (Research Assistant) will NOT receive tuition benefit assistance. Salary rates may vary and are assigned by individual faculty from their Professorships or federally funded grants. It seems like TA/RA won't necessarily cover much of the tuition, plus I've heard from some current students that it's also difficult to manage the workload considering we still have to keep up our academic courses and practica. But I did find some interesting research/labs at UT that closely match my interests. Have you made your decision yet?
  3. Declined SJSU and SDSU today, going to UT Austin this fall. So relieved that this whole process is finally over. Thank you guys for your help and support during the past months, you are all very resourceful. Congrats to those who've made their decisions and finger crossed for those who're still waiting, I'm sure the best always comes at last. Any future SLPs going Austin? =]
  4. I'm probably going to decline SDSU and attend UT Austin instead, hopefully that opens up a spot for whoever is on the wl. I'm a CSU student too, and I'm really tired of the tuition increase and I'm quite interested in the labs offered at UTA. BTW, do you know what's going on with TC? They are really slow according to what they initially promised, but someone from the TC Facebook group called the department, we're probably going to hear back in early April...=( I feel very disappointed about all three rejections from the medical programs, even though I keep telling myself, it's nothing about where you go to school but how you learn/practice as a future clinician... I would love to work in the hospital/rehab, but I'm afraid I wouldn't be as prepared as other SLPs who got in medical SLP programs. Do you guys know does it really make a difference whether you attended an program specialized in bilingual education or medical rehabilitation? Also if you attended the grad school elsewhere, as long as you passed the praxis and have your master degree and CFY, you should be able to apply for license in every state right? I want to come back and practice in CA. Anyone else on the same boat?
  5. Congratulations!!! Never lose hope right? I'm sure there are more to come! =] BIG CONG! BU is my dream school but I doubt I have any chance though, it's such a a reach school for me. I think without a scholarship you can still get partial subsidize through TA/RAs right? Have you checked any external scholarship resources? It's really an awesome school, I have been shadowing a BU alumna for more than 6 months now and she has taught me so much both professionally and personally. Just made me really interested to go to that school as well. BTW, 100% acceptance rate is just wayyyyy amazing. =)
  6. I got a rejection email from UW - Med SLP program yesterday, and I double checked the application page today, under status it indicated I did not receive the acceptance. I guess if you status didn't change, at least you made it through the first round cut. It's kinda disappointing because I didn't even make it to the waitlist. I'm really interested in working in a medical rehab setting. My grandmother suffered from stroke for 16 years and she passed away last year. Unfortunately in China and many other developing countries, people are really behind in the concept about rehabilitation. Watching my grandmother suffering from paralysis and lacking of rehab care really inspired me, plus I do work better with adults comparing with kids so hospital is my ideal career setting. Oh well, I guess UW is just a super-reach school for me. Luckily yesterday there's also an acceptance from UT Austin, I guess they found me to be a better fit, which made the UW rej a little bit easier to take. I'm an ELL student myself, immigrated to U.S. during high school, went through all the cultural and language barriers, so I am also enthusiastic to help those ELL as well. But yeah, at least I'm going to graduate school and I'm gonna become a speech pathologist. =] Congrats to all those who got acceptance letters, and good luck to those who are still waiting. Stay strong, guys.
  7. Congrats to those who are going to grad schools!! This surely is going to become a roller coaster month isn't it? Where did you guys get the information that UW will notify students after 4 weeks? I've been checking my Med SLP program and the status page indicated: "Expected Decision Date: The program to which you applied expects to make their admissions decisions by mid March." Apparently, every school is like: MID MARCH.
  8. Same here. Majority of the SLP programs won't start sending letters out until mid-March/April. Working and taking night classes didn't really help with the anxiety. =(
  9. Personal statement ended up being my favorite piece of the puzzle. It gave me a chance to reflect upon my accomplishment in life and my love for the profession.
  10. I submitted CSDCAS on 12/6, got verified around Christmas, mailed around 12/28. If you application was mailed, check the left side for "Academic Update", this is another step which you can go in the application and enter your grades for Fall 2011, and updates will be automatically sent to the schools. U pitts emailed me yesterday saying that my application is complete for review, and I will get a notification around 3/25. The long wait starts now.
  11. There are only few SLP programs providing your specialization, and during my research with different schools, I only found MGH in Boston with a reading specialty(http://www.mghihp.edu/academics/communication-sciences-and-disorders/degree-options/master-of-science-speech-language-pathology/default.aspx). Schools in CA offer limited specializations, if you really want to acquire more knowledge in that field during the master study, I recommend go with the best program not the geographical location.
  12. Hi Leesta: Sorry for applying you late, just finished 3 finals today for the semester. I have experiences with both adults and children, but I prefer adult population with an emphasis on medical rehabilitation. Being a non-native English speaker made me a little scared to work in the schools, but I'm also applying a couple bilingual programs since I'm also really interested in that field. Hmm.. I need to turn my TC app in, everything is ready to go(including letters) but I'm still feeling something was missing in my personal statement. I'm applying only 2 schools with 1/15 deadlines with CSDCAS, but thank to the Gradcafe community - a previous post mentioned that last year, it took them FOREVER to calculate the GPA before everything got sent to the schools, so I'm already sending my current grades in, even though my GPA could be "significantly" higher after the fall grades. btw, double check with your schools because mine is on a semester system. Although the grades are available by late December, they may not necessarily become available on transcript until mid January(-> my school). Good luck to the all the Spring/Fall 2012ers!!
  13. Happy to see a fellow student from CA! I totally feel your pain, it seems like we're taking another upper division class filled with papers and research, isn't it? I'm still working on my PS, waiting for 2 letters but I definitely need to send my transcripts and GRE now, schools in the east coast have a much faster pace than the west, forcing me to work on two waves of applications simultaneously. =(
  14. I think you are fine with the online classes, because one of our fall 2011 applicant did hers online(actually through Utah State) and she loved it. Our department's master program is quite competitive in the area and she got in successfully as a non-CDS student. Good luck!
