I currently live in Somerville (just north of Cambridge) - plenty of housing although "affordable" is a bit of a joke anywhere in the Boston area. My old place was $700 for a three bedroom which was a VERY rare deal. I'd expect rents between $800 and $1000 per person depending on # of roommates and location.
Also very curious about working during the program...

Amen to waiting being the worst. CTE history applicant, here; also haven’t heard anything from professors so feels a bit like I’m just biding my time until the inevitable rejection...

Parking in Harvard Square is pretty tough. There’s a T (subway) station right there. I’m planning on either biking or taking the T next year from my place (in Davis square, for reference).
