    Hi again!

I had my interview this morning and wanted to share in case anyone here still has an upcoming one scheduled. There were 8 others in the room and we started exactly on time. The interviewer was very nice and understood a lot of us were nervous and really tried to put us at ease, she said If you were interviewing you were more than half way to an acceptance, and this was a way of putting a face to your application. I would say to prep, think about your volunteer/work experiences and how that is shaping your goals, why hunter? and be prepared for follow up questions about your experiences such as how you dealt with certain things or what you’ve learned about yourself, etc. We then had a scenario that was a bit tricky that we discussed as a group while she listened, followed by the writing piece. I found the writing to be the most intense (even the interviewer said she thinks they should pick a different article) because it you have 25 minutes to read and respond to the article and it was a 3 paged article with small font, and the content was a little dense, by the time I had read and highlighted a few things I only had about 10 minutes. But all in all I think it went well. I would say take your time and think about your responses, and relax and think of it as more of a discussion like you would have in class, and try to be genuine as opposed to what you think they want to hear. Also make sure you’re answering the actual question asked! A lot of people didn’t and got side tracked and carried away talking about specific situations at work that were not relevant, and of course stay away from personal experiences, as they remind you.

Hope that was helpful to anyone else ( if there even is anyone else) who still needs to interview. Best of luck!

The bolded sounds like code for racial profiling which is illegal and should be stopped. It can probably be stopped with an injunction so someone would have to go to court to stop it (and since they are accepting some applicants without interviews then it shouldnt be hard to get the injunction to stop the interviews altogether.

Also, the writing sample seems like a joke. Giving applicants 25 minutes to read a 3 paged article and then write a coherent response is ridiculous and should not be happening.

That said, from what I heard, a judge refused to dismiss a lawsuit against them so it would be interesting to see the writing samples of accepted students and why they got accepted over the ones who were rejected. Maybe this lawsuit will clarify what is going on with the admissions process at this school.

I am so confused because I just got my decision and I GOT IN! But I didn't go through the interview process so I am absolutely lost. I even called the Admissions office and they said not everyone gets an interview and she verified it as well. Has this happened to anyone else? Because another person who works at my current site also was accepted but without an interview as well. I am excited but also wondering if this was a fluke of some kind.

My understanding is that they are being sued for having an illegal and discriminatory admissions process so they are changing the way they do things but not sure why they are interviewing some people while accepting others without an interview. Perhaps someone who went to the interview can answer to that.

I think it mostly is a reflection of who they enroll. Hunter has an interview process that they partially use to test social justice awareness. While a portion of NYU students are there to go into private practice and less interested in social justice. The cost differential also means the lived experiences of students enrolling in Hunter vs NYU differ a bit.

The other contributing factor I’ve heard is Hunter has a community organizing track, which attracts students particularly interested in social justice.

Historically, NYU branded itself as clinically rigorous and Hunter branded as focused on social justice. NYU has been trying to change that from everything I have seen (admission essay prompt, info sessions, their DROP course), but you only have to go on their admitted students page to see there’s still significant issues and active student debate on racism on campus.

Thank you. I heard about the email at NYU but the school is refusing to make it public so its hard to determine what really happened (especially in light of the fact that people are making up stuff for their own personal interest i.e. Jussie Smollet so not sure what to make of the NYU debacle). Besides, it seems a bit KGB/mafia type for one student to squeal on another student to the administration regarding a private email correspondence so not sure how mature students are at NYU to begin with if this story is true.

As for Hunter, my understanding is that they are being sued for discrimination and/or there are other problems with this school in terms of students not being allowed to graduate or being given a hard time to graduate so maybe its not as great as the school makes it out to be.

Based on these, I would look into other schools that have better psychology/social work based education and more mature students. Thank you.

Most of what I've heard is that Hunter is considered more prestigious within NY because it's more selective because more people apply since it's more affordable. Obviously, if you leave NY, NYU name carries more weight.

The main complaint I hear about Hunter is that administration is painful - as you've probably seen from the application process. Slow / don't respond to emails, really have to advocate for yourself, etc.

NYU also has the edge if you want to go into private practice, conversely, Hunter is considered to have more of an emphasis on social justice.

Can you explain what you mean by Hunter having more of an emphasis on social justice?
