Thanks for all the feedback. I think I may get some business cards. I most likely wont go into academia after I graduate, so I want to network for future jobs and business cards will help.
-
Can all PhD students call themselves PhD Candidates? Or only those who are done with coursework?
-
Do any of the current PhD students have business cards? I know some universities have printing services for PhD students to have business cards. Just wondering what others are doing.
-
Does your university supply you with health insurance with your graduate assistantship? Are you getting the same health benefits as employees of the school?
-
If you already know you want to teach, go ahead and go the traditional teaching route and make that your career choice.

Jury consultant- look at Tufts, UTEP, FIU, Kentucky, Arkansas, Arizona State, U of Arizona, UC Irvine, UF (criminology, law, and society)...those all have jury researchers.

Recently saw a Psychology professor tweet about this site that allows you to submit and look at schools and their stipends. It's basically just like the results page but for stipends. Thought I would share to get more people to submit their info.
It's also nice to see what other departments are giving out compared to your own. -

1. Fit
2. Fit
3. Fit
Of course funding is important and the school, but when making a list of schools you want to apply to, make sure the research fits. You don't want to apply to Harvard even thought they do not do the research you want to do. Maybe the top researcher in your area is at a state school in Ohio. That school would be better, in my opinion, than Harvard that doesn't do the research you want to do.

What area of psychology?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have Nate Silver's book on my shelf. Just gotta find time to read it. Has anyone read The Invisible Gorilla: How our Intutiions Decieve us by Simons & Charbis?
-
What are some good nonfiction psychology books that you have read? I know Steven Pinker has written a few books.

This really helps. Thanks for all of the suggestions. I don't start until the fall, but it's great knowing all these ideas before I start. I am working on a generic website right now that shows my research interests, cv, etc.

All I can tell you is that the Chicago campus is APA accredited which is a good thing.

Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks for the honesty. I just want to do some side projects on my own that is not relevant to the lab I will be working in.
-
Do PhD students in the social sciences ever start their own labs while still in school? Is that strange? Like, if I wanted to put together a "Digits Lab" wesbite to explain my research interets and to recruit RAs. I know I will be working on projects with my advisor, but I still would like to work on other projects at the same time.
-
What's not to be sold on?? From bjacque's program, you'll be over 120,000 dollars in debt, have a degree from an unaccredited program (errg...excuse me...on probation from the APA), and not be able to find an internship. Fun huh?? Oh...and a 14% APA accredited internship placement last year
What Lucid said!

Can PhD student start their own "lab" while in school? Could I start a "Digits Lab" website to show my research and to recruit RAs or would that be out of place for a student?
-
It's called your professors. They will do it for free.

I applied to cognitive psych I've seen some people get interview offers, so I don't know what my lack of an interview means. It could mean that I'm a top candidate, a wait-list candidate or completely rejected! All this waiting is getting to me. LOL.
Do you want to list the programs you applied to? Maybe we can all help with what we know about the programs.
-
I've heard back from Kentucky's Cognitive Psychology program. That's the only one so far.

I applied to Harvard (a few years ago) and have two letters from them: The first in March saying they were unable to offer me admission. The second in July saying that there had been a "security breech" of their admissions database and my personal data may have been compromised.
I applied to Harvard and all I got was a lousy year of free credit monitoring services.
Hahah. That happened to me when I applied to Tufts a few years back.

I think it's between late january and early feb. I would suggest searching the results database and finding out what your schools have done in the past.
Interview invitations already?
