  1. MMA definitely needs people who can write. The people who are at the top of MMA reporting are generally very poor writers and more importantly, they are worse researchers. If you have a knack for MMA writing, I urge you, as a die hard fan, to try your hand at MMA reporting. You could learn things about writing and researching through an MA in History , but you would gain more marketability from an MA in journalism or something like that. If you aren't ready to leave history behind, find a funded MA program and try your hand at that while at the same time getting a portfolio together for sports writing. Seriously, you are like my soul mate. I am starting a funded MA this fall, but MMA writing is certainly in the back of my mind. Best of luck.

  2. This rejection process seems so random. Is it by last name or something? I am going to get rejected so I just want my cycle to be over already. How many out there are still waiting?

  3. I got my rejection letter from Boston College today. I was offered the consolation MA, but I am pretty sure there aren't any funding opportunities. Congrats to anybody who got into the PhD.

  4. Back in January, I flipped out because I thought my transcript wasn't in when I saw that my "Final Bachelor's Transcript" thing. But I was told it was just a "system glitch" and that my official transcript had made it. I'm still waiting on BC. Three people have posted results so far (2 rejections, 1 admit) but I still haven't heard anything. The website does say this: "The committee generally examines Ph.D. applications during the month of February and M.A. applications during the month of March...We try to make offers of admission to the Ph.D. program by early March... For the M.A. program, we make offers in late March, with an acceptance deadline of June 1." So presumably there's still a couple weeks or so for PhD admissions. Maybe no news is good news? Who knows...

This just happened today. I check every couple of days. The portal has always said that they have my officiall transcript. On the results page last year some people saw this and were later accepted into a couple other programs. I was looking around my portal and it has a new tab for financial aid that wasn't there before. Does it have that on yours?I am pretty sure that those rejects on the results page were supposed to be for BU and not BC. BC doesn't reject anyone that early and they do it by post, not email. I am just waiting it out now. We will see what happens.

  5. So I just checked my application status for Boston College and under the required documents section it said that I need to send in my Final Bachelors Transcript. Does anybody else have this on their Agora Portal? I called the department secretary to ask what that meant and she just told me they had all of my required application materials. I applied for the PhD program, but had given up hope because they usually tell students before now. Have people heard from BC? I am hoping that this means I am accepted, but this might be a consolation MA. It just seems too early for them to have made a decision on that. I would love to go to BC, but I don't want to get too excited yet. Can anybody enlighten me?

  6. Re Minnesota admission, I'm legal/African American history. 18th and 19 century emphasis. Looking at past years, their acceptances have gone out over a couple days, so don't write it off yet.

If you applied to work with Kirsten Fischer then I am going to have to write it off. I will just have to wait and see. Congrats, that is a great school.

  7. Minnesota's acceptances have started rolling out--just got an email from DGS. Finally, good news!

What's your field? I have been stressing about Minnesota all week. Now I am scared to death. I feel like I fit so well there. I am going to be heartbroken if I don't get in.

  8. Was just wait-listed at UIUC.

I'll see what I can find out.

Those of you who have heard from Northwestern: did you receive an email directing you to the site, or did you just happen to check? If there will be a notification when a decision is reached, there isn't any point to me checking the application website every 20 minutes.

I just randomly checked the application page. I still haven't received an email telling me to check my status.

  9. Yeah, Wisconsin is definitely coming this week. I can feel it.

A peer of mine was accepted at Wisconsin to work with Cohen this last week. He just got a letter in the mail and it had no mention of funding. I bet letters are still coming.

  10. Just got rejected. I just randomly checked the my application and my decision was there. It wasn't too much of a surprise. I was hoping that one of my letter writers being an alumnus of the graduate program would be helpful but alas.

  11. I don't know if I should say it's fine or congratulations. But good news is always good news. Hope there would be more to you.

And wish the same for me... I'm getting anxious... :(

I definitely feel that any good news is exciting. I wasn't torn up over Duke at all. The fit was really horrible. Some of my professors encouraged me to apply even though I felt there wasn't much for me there. I have 7 decisions left and I hope I can get some more good news. This acceptance makes it so my wife can attend Duke Medical School should she be admitted in the coming month. This wait has been excruciating with both of us applying. Best of luck to all. It's a long process and I think the waiting will never stop sucking.

  12. I got rejected at Duke today b/c of horrible fit, but I just randomly checked my status for North Carolina State and I was recommended for admission for the MA program. So, at least someone kinda likes me.

  13. I almost started this thread myself. I have gotten 3 of these, 1 approximately every 2 weeks since the deadline for submission. I think this is a way for them to lull you into a false sense of security and then BAM you get an email that slaps you in the face with a rejection. This is what I am expecting anyway. I wish some other schools took the initiative to update you on what they actually have and what they don't. It would make this process a little less complicated. Whatever, Duke is different.

  14. I am too. I would really love Northwestern. One of my letter writers went there over Penn for Early America. I think it would be awesome to study in Chicago and take advantage of all that Northwestern has to offer. Best of luck to everyone.

  15. Excellent. You have a lot in common with your wife already. I have several friends who have been applying to med school over the last few years. Even though the admissions processes are so different, one just has much of a chance of getting into a med school as one getting into a history PhD program.

Maybe you and your wife can come up with some kind of betting game? :)

As for posting stats, frankly, it's pointless. Your SOP, writing samples, and LORs (and perhaps language fluency), the most subjective aspects of your application, are far more important than your GPA and GRE scores. I just don't believe in evaluating chances or see the point of posting such stats. Especially when there are really a lot of highly qualified people out there. The recession has very little impact on the overall quality of applications, surprisingly (as professors have told me).

I am hoping she has a better shot than me b/c her stats are so good for med school, and stats matter a great deal more. The MSAR says she has a 90% chance of getting in somewhere, so we are just waiting it out. It truly scares me when I look at the highly qualified people that are applying just from my undergrad. This processes is just too crazy. Best of luck to everyone though.

  16. I am applying in Early American history focusing on slavery, antislavery and religion.

    UNC

    Minnesota

    Brandeis

    Boston College

    Duke

    Northwestern

    Rochester

    Tufts (MA)

    North Carolina State (MA)

    GPA: UGPA: 3.5 Major: 3.82

    GRE: 630V, 690Q and 5.5 AW.

My recommenders have all been really supportive and complimentary of my writing sample. I know it's a crapshoot, so I am glad my wife is applying to med school.

    Best to all

  17. I just took the GRE and scored way less than I thought I would. I got a 580V and a 670Q. I just realized that I got the first question of the verbal wrong so that probably screwed me. I am planning on applying to PhD programs at mostly mid-tier schools like Boston College, University of Rochester, and Brandeis with a few masters programs also. I am reaching at Minnesota and UNC because I have emailed professors and they have been enthusiastic about my research. I only have a 3.5 cumulative GPA but I have a 3.8 History GPA with a strong upward trend. I could potentially retake the test in like two weeks and boost my score or I could just go with what I have. The professors who have read my writing sample have been very enthusiastic also. What should I do. I am an Early Americanist and know that grad school is where I want/need to be. I am just scared that I messed it all up.
