Hi, Thanks for the support. While I do have many recognitions, I worked that hard just to improve my chances at a SSHRC. It is the only funding I could get being Canadian in the USA. It is too sad that I was not successful as it is so extremely difficult financially. It is too bad that I could only put my money towards 1 award and I failed. Maybe I tried too hard. I do wish I would know what the scoring meant so I can at least understand it and perhaps I could feel better about it. I could then feel that I may have been judged on type of research rather than on my records or writing ability. I waited till my second year so I was sure about my research and that was most likely my mistake. I should have started the year before. I am trying to look at the bright side of things but in fact not having the SSHRC also means my research will be strictly web based surveys and no case studies and so forth which I was planning to do. It will be a dissertation on a smaller scale. Perhaps if I knew in April I would have just found a job as I am ABD now. Oh well... another punch of which I could only get stronger from I guess. Thanks again for your kind words

Great disappointement today. Letter arived in Arkansas. Did not get it. 14/30 on the waiting list but there is no chance probably so I am not counting on it. My stats : 4.0/4.0 GPA, Award for distinguished Masters Thesis, Gold medal in undergraduate school, 1 book published, 1 chapter in book and 3 articles and about 10 national and international conference presentations. Outstanding Masters' student award as well as outstanding doctoral student award. This was my only and last chance as I graduate next year. I have one difficult financial year ahead. I worked so hard to get here and now this news hits me. It is devastating really as I put it all on the line. I guess we all get rejected one day or another. Good luck to the rest of you! And thanks for the support within this forum.

Still waiting wondering how much longer it will take the mail. You think it will be this week for sure It almost has been a month since we thought we would hear news... BTW thanks for posting this because I am 3 hours from my mailbox and so I am waiting to hear from someone in the US before I make my long trip to get my mail.
-
Those of you in the US, let us think today will be the day our SSHRC mail arrives.
-
No SSHRC mail today here in Arkansas, USA more waiting
-
In US, received mail but not from SSHRC....more waiting and I must postpone a trip I was about to take tomorrow. Now I must drive 6 hours just to check my mail....got to do what I got to do. Still hopeful..

From US, no letter today... I am making myself sick worrying if it will get here tomorrow or not as I am leaving town on Sunday. Can anyone tell me if you are successfull that you have to complete forms that are in the letter or do you complete letters online? To accept. Just thinking ahead in case someone else has to open my mail which I would se hate but what can you do? If any of you in US received a letter please let the forum know

I emailed SSHRC as the mail is likely to get here when I leave from US to Canada on a trip home... They said they forwarded my email and file to a program officer. What's a program officer? Is that someone at SSHRC? Thanks ---- ok received news back right away that they would send a copy letter to an address in Canada which does not help me as I am traveling all over Canada. Oh well... hoping for the mail to come either today or tomorrow. crossing my fingers

So if I get one now I should go back to Canada for my final dissertation and get bumped up just joking you know. To me the "small SSHRC" is huge
-
That is pretty sweet! Congrats again!
-
Congratulations! I don't understand... I thought it was $20.000 Can you explain how you got $35000?
-
I am happy for you. Does a big or small sshrc refer to the # of years?
-
no letter yet... (US). some nervous times ahead as I can't call the graduate school as they won't know so waiting for the mail. I am happy though for all of you who have received good news. And those who did not receive good news, I hope you try again . I onlyhave 1 year left so this is it
-
Anybody in the US hear anything yet?
-
That is so funny because I did the exact same thing... including honey bunches of oats (with peaches).
-
haha Yes, sorry it is just an american thing but soon they will get rid of mail on sat here too.. too costly. I am leaving on sunday so I am hoping it is in the mail before on sat or earlier. I keep refreshing the page to see if anybody else has heard anything.
-
Congrats RaaR! This is so exciting! I am so anxious though. Thank goodness for Saturday mail... if it is 3 days... which may be more to USA... I won't sleep really, I won't.

Well... passed candicacy exams and completed all my course work. Only a good SSHRC letter would complete my happy mood Just can't believe I am finishing up 25 years of school... wow... it is about time I start to get serious
-
That would be nice... just when I am about to leave for a week!!!! AAAHHHH I am the same boat.... in US and I kinda want to open the envelope myself and not let my roommate read me the news. Will we get an email or something from the university here in the US as well or only the letter?
-
Ah I see. Yes, I will be a full-time student through the summer for sure as I am saving up some dissertation hours just in case. Also, has it happened that you get part of year 4 or do you have to complete your entire year 4 to get the grant. Thanks! This forum helps! I appreciate your assistance!

Thank you for your reply! Here is one more question that I was thinking of after receiving your answer. I am "attempting" to finish in 3 years and this is the start of my third year. However, do they distinguish between graduation and completion date? Here in the US it can go either way, you can graduate in May but complete in august or you can complete in May and graduate in August. Would that make a difference in payment? And now that I understand what you are saying, can you change your start date from the one you put on the application date? I put May but it may be better to put September... Another post also said that canadians in US universities get 2 checks, 1 every 6 months... than my start date may not matter. April 28... can you believe that I have lost some weight form all this stress? haha does not help that I am finishing my candacacy exams as well... Thanks!

I was asking about the number of times they pay out but from reading the quotes I think it is monthly, which would make sense. Thank you all for explaining this to me. I can therefore count on a June pay out if I get one... it is good to know I appreciate all your responses.
-
I was wondering if anybody could explain to me the dates they have: may, sept, jan. If I choose May, does that mean they only start paying may of next year (2011) or May 2010? Or does it mean they pay over 3 times? Not sure if I understand it. If someone does I would love to hear from you all Thanks!

Sweet! I am from Belgium and Canada, but doing PhD in USA and also waiting for SSHRC... You so gotta go to Belgium! If you are interested in the War battles don't forget to visit the Canadian War museum, it is fantastic I will be going in August.
