I'm curious about this as well. I'm not sure which school I'll attend yet, so I don't want to miss out on any financial aid for any of them. But it seems odd to be sending in my tax forms and W2's to each school to apply for aid...

Congrats! It must be such a relief to finally have a decision made so you can move forward. -

The letter said funding decisions will be sent out in the next 2-3 weeks. -

I did, but it's definitely a back-up school since I live in the northeast. I don't know much about it. The assistantship sounds like a good deal at the 20/week end, and I think 20/week is pretty standard for assistantships. I'm new at all this though, so don't quote me on that! I think you need to choose something that you can live with personally and financially. I would love to take MGH up on their acceptance offer--I wouldn't have to move, I love the program and faculty--but it's way out of my financial reach. I personally am not willing to take out huge loans for graduate school, especially in a field where the name of your school doesn't mean anything when you're applying for jobs later on. So my vote: make a wise financial decision. But also make sure you won't be miserable at that school. Check it out, see how you feel. If you're still getting bad vibes about it, then take a pass. But I wouldn't discard it without taking a look at it first. Besides, NAU is in a prime location for some seriously amazing roadtrips in the southwest. -

Haha, no, it wasn't anything as horrendous as that! I sent them an earlier draft of my PS instead of the final draft, but the earlier draft had some serious holes in it that were marked in red so I wouldn't forget to fill them in. It was a bang-head-on-table moment when I noticed my mistake. -

Sounds like you just need a couple of classes then--I'm not sure why they would classify you as out-of-field for this. You can easily finish a couple of courses before the Fall and get caught up with everyone else. I would call the schools you're planning on/thinking of attending and ask them what their prereq requirements are in your case. You can ask them about whether or not online classes will be accepted too (should you go the USU route). I have taken a couple of courses through USU that I couldn't take locally, and found it to be a decent experience. A good thing to note: even though the class is online, you do need to get an official to proctor all of your exams. I went to my local library for mine. -

There are a LOT of schools that offer these classes. I would first check with the universities you're interested in, as most schools have some type of prereq completion option available, and that way you take the classes you need for that specific school since they vary across the board. I took my prepreq classes at 4 different schools just because I wanted to feel them out and get to know the faculty and clinic there, but it made for a transcript hassle come application time. If there are no face-to-face class options around you, a popular (and crazy cheap!) online option is Utah State University. They offer all of their comm-dis prereq courses every semester (and you don't need to be part of their bachelors program to take them). Check them out: http://comd.usu.edu/...stbach_overview -

For those of you looking for Emerson responses: they have apparently updated their eCommon application status tab. When you click on your application status link, an uploaded letter should show up saying accepted/rejected. Or, in my case, your letter could say absolutely nothing but "Dear so-and-so". So annoying! -

Has anyone who heard from MGH know anything about when we'll hear about potential funding? I was in the middle of a grocery store when I got my call, so between the noise and my happy dance, I did not catch everything that was said on the phone. -

Clinical placement was definitely an issue for some of the schools I applied to. They won't take on any more students then they can successfully place for external practicums. And even for the schools in big cities with a lot of clinical resources, there are usually multiple programs competing with each other for placements. -
Thank for the advice! I received my acceptance via e-mail and phone. I should probably wait for the official letter in the mail before calling to inquire about funding, right? I was told it would be here sometime this week.

I was accepted into a master's program, but did not receive any funding offers with my letter of acceptance. Judging from these boards, funding letters could come a couple weeks later. This particular school has received a couple of federal grants that allow them to cover at least half of their incoming MA students in my field, but I'm not sure on when they will let students know if they are qualified to apply for these grants (it's a separate application process; the faculty choose which students in the incoming class they want to fill out the application). Would it be okay to call the head of the department to ask when I might hear about funding (or give me a funding timeline)? Or would that seem pushy and I should just wait it out for a few more weeks? Would it be okay to ask if I can contact the grant coordinator directly to find out more about what it entails, and hopefully get some face time with the faculty to potentially raise my chances of getting selected to apply for it? I want to start figuring out how to finance my studies, but don't want to appear impatient.

Significant others and the application process

I feel your pain. My boyfriend will not not be moving with me when I head off for school either. His job and school has him stuck here for at least another year. I applied to 3 local schools, but it doesn't look like any of them will be panning out. Luckily, I'm probably only headed a couple of hours away, so it's not really the end of the world. It does put a damper on the excitement of getting in though...we've been living together for 3 years so it will feel odd and lonely to move away without him, even if he is still kind of right down the road. I have a friend who has carried out a long distance relationship while he finishes his PhD. They take turns flying out to see each other every other weekend, and it has worked out really well for them. They just got engaged. If they can make it work, we can make it work. It's definitely not forever! -
What would be proper etiquette for giving a gift to a recommender who is a professor at your new graduate school? I did research and study with this professor last year, which is why the prof wrote me a letter. I would like to appropriately thank this prof for writing me a letter that I'm sure was a big component on why I got into this graduate program. So what would be appropriate but not over the top, since I will now be working with this prof during my graduate studies?

What were you doing when you received your acceptance?

I have spent the last 4 days in bed, sick out of my mind. This morning I woke up at 6am feeling remarkably better. My iPhone was buzzing next to the bed that I had new e-mails, so I started deleting all the junk e-mail that usually comes in over night. Delete, delete, delete, del--wait a second. It's a university e-mail! Sure enough, I received a "your application status has changed" e-mail. No status was mentioned in the e-mail though, so I bolted out of bed to my laptop to frantically check the application status site. My boyfriend thought I was having another sick moment. But I came running back into the bedroom and started jumping up and down on the bed yelling "I'm got in! I got in! I got in!". My boyfriend seriously thought my fever had gotten the best of me! I don't know if my fever has finally broke or what, but I'm now feeling 100 times better. Drinks out in Harvard Square to celebrate with the girls tonight! Sickness be damned! -

Very good to know! -
This might just be my field, but a lot of the schools I applied to are delayed in their decision making this year due to the excessive amount of applications (one schools received 630 applications--they only take 30 students into their program each year). I had been expecting to hear back from some schools by now, and have confirmed that--at the EARLIEST--I will start hearing from schools by the END of March now. It's a painful waiting game. But we made it through February and we'll make it through March as well. Chin up!

Seriously. And I'm guessing that since they've only gotten through half the applications, that the letters being mailed this week are all rejections. I called a couple of my other schools that didn't use CSDCAS, and they said that applicants won't hear anything until the end of March. Looks like all program decisions are delayed this year. -

An Emerson update: someone posted on the results page that Emerson received 630 applications this year (yikes!) and have so far only gone through half of them. Letters will start going out this week sometime.
