Only remote option I have for a PhD this year is at UIUC. I'm on the waitlist, but am going to inquire about my position. I don't have much hope because I was waitlisted there 2 years ago and did not get in, but I can't stop myself from wanting it (mainly because I did an MA with the point of doing a PhD, and I feel like I wasted two years of my life). I have other options, I've gotten into a law program with full tuition, and I should be grateful, but I really really want to go here

for what it's worth, I found myself in a similar predicament 2 years ago. I was accepted on April 15 to two non-ranked PhD programs, so I opted to do a masters at a well-regarded program. This year has been brutal, and I only have one waitlist (and I'm presuming more rejections to come). Just know that getting a masters does not guarantee you getting into a PhD in two years. Maybe I just had shit luck. I also felt like I had less help (in general) from profs at my MA program than I did undergrad (this also may be due to covid, and everyone being remote)

Waitlisted here, by far my top choice due to the faculty research interests and the dual degree (JD/PhD) option. If you have an offer and don't want to'/ don't plan to attend, please decline so that the flood gates can be opened!
