  1. I apologize for all the questions - I am a first generation student and the people at school I asked did not know.

If you were to win a SSHRC or Bombardier, is it automatically for the amount of years you are eligible for depending on current year in your PhD? I.e. if you get a bombardier and its your first year do you automatically get 3 years... or does SSHRC decide how many terms you will get. For example me and A are both in first year, we both get the bombardier - is it possible they award me only one year and A two?

I believe the A level and B level thing is for direct applicants only.  So don’t worry that you didn’t get a letter about it from SSHRC.

From what I understand about the process, as an applicant affiliated with a university, your application needed to go through an initial review at your institution.  You passed that first hurdle when Lakehead selected your application to be sent to SSHRC and after that it  moved on to the national competition.

It is nice that SSHRC sent your application back to Lakehead.  Hopefully the person who provided you with the wrong information knows now for future years how the process works.

edited to clarify: I checked the website and there is an A level and B level division for affiliated applicants, but this is an internal thing and you’re supposed to hear back from your university.  You would only get a letter from SSHRC about being A or B level if you’re a direct applicant.

Yes it was nice it was sent back! It really saved me! Well perhaps.. I haven't heard back yet, but at least I am not out for a stupid mistake. I know she said I scored highly at the school level, but who knows how that translates to an actual SSHRC.

I got an email from my university around January 8th letting me know I was recommanded by my university.

Now I haven't heard anything from them... I guess it's bad sign.

I did receive an email on Jan 9th from SSHRC saying my application was recieved if that helps at all.

  4. So apparently I did send it in the wrong way, but it was bounced back to my school and submitted correctly. My program coordinator just confirmed it was adjudicated at the school level as she was part of the committee.

Also, on the SSHRC website it says all applications are ranked as A level and B level, A level being recommended for funding, and from there it goes to National competition. It says applicants will be notified at this stage, I didn’t hear anything about being A or B level or is it something you find out when you get your SSHRC results? This is my first application so I am very confused.

Did they change that?  I had to apply for the 2017-2018 through the university where I was doing my Masters even though I was going somewhere else.  Anyway, good luck!!

I have no idea, this is my first year applying and did it the way my program coordinator told me. I mailed it in.

im just really hoping that I wasn’t advised wrong.

Is the school where you are doing your Masters in Canada?

Yes I am doing it at Lakehead in Thunder Bay. I applied directly as I am planning on going to the University of Manitoba this fall for PhD.

  7. :( That makes me sad. Yesterday, I received an email from the school I accepted my offer to asking if I was planning on holding my award there - it did not specify SSHRC or any specific award - but when I asked for more details they said nevermind please delete. I had hopes they may have known my SSHRC results. Its extra crappy that I received the email on the day of the results as it totally had my hopes raised.

  8. Would institutions have results on direct applicants? I.e. if I put a specific school that I plan to take my PhD at in fall on my SSHRC, would that institution have received results about my application?

  9. Hello,

I applied directly to SSHRC. I am completing my masters this semester at a different institution. I have been accepted into a PhD program at University of Manitoba. I recieved a weird email from UofM about an hour ago asking me if was planning on holding ‘the award’ there? It did not specify SSHRC... just said ‘the award’.

When I clarified what award as I did not receive any promises of funding from UofM, the person said ‘Nevermind, please delete’ and has not responded to my follow up email.

As an external applicant that put UofM as the school I was planning on attending for my PhD in Fall, would they receive SSHRC info about my application???? Just so weird they emailed me today and then back pedaled... however I do not want to get my hopes up about a SSHRC.
