  1. Anyone have the issue of just not being able to get signed in? It won't let me set a password. I've tried to reset as well, and no go. I just keep getting error messages. I'm wondering if it has something to do with that I had an extranet account already? Super frustrating to know my results are there but I can't access them!

Edit: After a whole bunch of resets, and switching to Google Chrome and bunch more resets, finally got it to work. No funding for me though.

Both.... I'm waiting until I hit my writing goal for the day to open it, though (almost there). There's going to be a lot of feelings either way and I can't have them interfering right now.. Will post my results once I have the nerve to open.

That is some impressive self-discipline! We appreciate you keeping the group up-to-date. No emails here and my Extranet still showing my 2020 Doctoral results, if that means anything.

Any chance you're looking at last year's results? I can see my 2021 results in extranet which were released on the 24th last year but not my 2022 results...

Seeing that everyone is having vastly different experiences, I'm just adding that when I log into my extranet account I see last year's results, a message that says "Your documents will be displayed below shortly. You will be notified once they are available." and a second line that says "To upload your document please click here to access your personal folder."

I did receive the e-mail saying that results were being released this week and that they would send info about accessing my extranet account, even though I already have one. Maybe they're having technical problems.

That's exactly what my Extranet shows as well, except showing my results from my SSHRC doctoral app/results in 2020. Assuming my new results will show up in the same place but who knows!?!?

Still nothing in my Extranet. If it's alphabetical, I'm not holding my breath. It'll be the end of the line for me.

I'm right near the beginning of the alphabet for my last name (B) and fairly close for first name (E) and nothing in my Extranet either, so I imagine it's by some other order -maybe by committee? I have kinda given up trying to make sense of SSHRC though :)

Thanks for this advice. You're right. I should probably talk to my supervisor about it and ask if he could do anything first. Maybe he doesn't think its a problem until I say it to him. I was just afraid it might be pretty awkward. Especially if he turns me down.

Sometimes it can be awkward, but sometimes they are focused on their own work and unaware of your situation. My experience has also been as an international student you sometimes have to be a bit more explicit, as they may not know the reality of your situation (like you can't just go look for another job). And honestly, the more you can open up the lines of communication with your supervisor moving forward, the better!

Your score is in the Results Letter, one of the 3 docs that was uploaded to Extranet.

See it now, thanks! I didn't notice there were 3 separate docs at first. Thank you!

    I got 15.9/20 in committee 4 (I think - I’m in psych).

Like others, my application was very similar last year, but I was waitlisted with an 11.1/20. I guess it comes down to who happens to read your application.

Where did you see your scores @psychundergrad? I was successful this year too, also with Committee 4, but my award letter doesn't show my scores.

  8. Just a note of encouragement, as I know the disappointment of being waitlisted. Happened in my 2nd cycle, 3rd time wasn't waitlisted and 4th time was the charm for me :)

Also, in case you're not aware, I was able to email SSHRC the year I was waitlisted and they told me my position on the waitlist, as I believe it's per committee and even per sub-committee. It doesn't necessarily give you the full picture, because who knows who will move up or not, but at least you have an idea.

Good luck and in case you don't make it off the waitlist, apply again next year! I'm glad that I didn't give up, even though I was very tempted after Year 2 and 3.

Thank you!!! It’s a bummer but at the same time.... oh well ?. I’m sure I’ll be rejected many times in my career, gotta start somewhere LOL. And Ugh... fingers crossed for you!!!

I’m so sorry :( my score was devastatingly low! As if I didn’t have enough imposter syndrome ?

Got my lowest score the the third year that I applied and then in my 4th year, success! So, don't give up! It's not a reflection on you or the importance of your work.

Just heard back and am on the waiting list! So definitely not all rejections today, at least.

Honestly after not even getting forwarded to the national competition last year, I consider this a win! Who knows, maybe it will turn into an actual win soon.

That was my experience - successful on the 4th time I applied. So don't give up :)

I'm part of committee 4 and  got a score on 15/20 but I didn't get the CGS-D. I got the SSHRC doctoral (at McGill). I wonder whether it has to do something with the institutions.

Can I ask where you're seeing your score? I got a CGS-D as well, but my score wasn't included as part of the award letter, poster to extranet. I'm also in Committee 4, and it's my 4 time applying, so I'm just curious about my score.

This is the weirdest part!! I've worked with university research departments before so I know that funding doesnt get rolled over. Once the timeline or the project is up, whatever you have left just gets returned. This applies for the funding for my research assistant position as well. So I don't understand why the administrative person in our department is so hard up on the timesheets. There was even one case where they doubted me and I had to prove that I had done work that week for my supervisor.

Heck, my supervisor could just tell me to read a book or do a lit review and put that in the timesheet, there would be no loss to him.

Yeah, I don't like it either. My definition of "salary" was definitely not this.

They do allow me to be employed elsewhere, as long as I keep it under 20 hours a week during term time and 40 hours a week during breaks (federal laws). I am currently trying to find other part-time work in other research teams. While I am qualified for these other jobs, I'm afraid that its in a very different direction from my dissertation work. These other jobs are financially beneficial, but not academically beneficial and I'm quite afraid that the mental fatigue of juggling multiple areas of research will bog me down.

I also did a TA job last semester for a different professor, but sadly, the school compensates TAs by giving us tuition credits. There's no money for the work. The credits are pretty useless for me given that I have tuition scholarship, but the teaching experience was definitely beneficial for me.

Fellow international student (from Canada) at a R1 in the US (UW-Madison). What does your supervisor say about the situation? It's in their best interest to make it work for you, so an honest conversation with them might be first step, assuming that's possible. Another option - talk to your union rep, if you haven't yet. They tend to have a good idea of the ins and outs of those offers. Might also be someone at International Student Services that can provide some insight too. Sorry to hear that you're in this situation.

The way it works at my university is that PhD students receive a 'base' funding of around $25k (unless they win an external scholarship), but its broken up like this:

    Faculty Scholarship: $9k
    TA/RA: $8k
    Tuition & Fees: $8k

The TA and RA wages, while 'guaranteed', are paid by the hour and there's no real minimum you can earn, if you only TA or RA for $5k that's what you're going to see instead of the $8k you would have originally been informed about. You don't actually see the Tuition and Fees money, its billed and paid direction, plus minus zero. So your real takehome is $17k, assuming you work enough.

You got fucked on reporting your hours, and their strict policy. If you got a contract for $25k that means the $25k was allocated and your supervisor fucked up by only 'spending' 1/5th of his/her budget, money that isn't exactly going to be sitting around again next year. You should have maxed out your time sheets for every hour you were eligible to be paid.

This is one difference between US and Canadian schools. I'm a Canadian in my PhD at a R1 University in the US as well. When they say "tuition remission" in the US, you don't pay any tuition, so the "up to $25,000" is separate from tuition. You do normally pay semester fees (which also covers stuff like using the gym), but in total, I pay around $700/semester for all fees. If I didn't have tuition remission, it'd be $30,000/year for tuition.

Thank you so much for your comment! US taxes boggle my mind!

Are you sending it to your Canadian bank account and then just transferring over any funds you will need to use?

Apologies for all the questions -- no one at my institution even knows what this award is, and I'm confused about some of the logistics.

Hey - no problem. I'm sending it to my Canadian bank account, but I actually right now am living in Canada and this past academic year have been living/conducting research in Colombia. So, I access my Canadian funds straight from my Canadian account. But, the 2 previous years when we were living in the US and needing Canadian funds, we could send funds very easily through our Canadian account. Obviously, you lose $$ on exchange rates, but unavoidable if you need the funds in US.

In terms of other logistics, I just filled in the two forms for accepting the award - the one that gets signed by your university and the Direct Deposit one and emailed them to SSHRC. I think that's it but if I hear of any other steps, I'll let you know.

I feel like I'm the only direct applicant without official results yet. Have my log in info, but no documents available... I'm preparing to be rejected, especially since it seems like a majority of the direct applicants who have heard back have been awarded SSHRC. My negative mind is telling me that I haven't heard back because I've been rejected. I'm a direct applicant pre-doctoral, going to start the first year of my PhD this fall in the US.

Hope you get your results soon and all the best for good news! And if by chance it's not what you're hoping for, give yourself some time and then apply again in the fall. I'm also a direct applicant, now in my 3rd year at a US university (UW-Madison) and finally got the award this year - after 3 unsuccessful applications! It's so hard to keep motivated to apply again, especially since it's not required by our universities, but it was worth it in my case. All the best!

I haven't got my results back yet. Someone was just wondering what the waitlist scores have been this year.

Hope you get your results soon and that they are positive!

  17. 4 minutes ago, socphd20 said:

It looks like there have been waitlist scores ranging from 10-13.5

Not waitlist this year, but in a previous year, my score was in the 12 range when I was waitlisted. At that time, I was able to email SSHRC and they told me my # on the waitlist, as my understanding is that waitlists are done by committee. I wasn't successful that year, but hope you make it off the waitlist. And if not, don't give up! I had 3 unsuccessful applications before being successful this year.

Hey! Congrats on your award. I am also a direct applicant in the US and found out I received the award today, too. Do you know if it is dispersed in US dollars, and they just calculate it according to the exchange rate of the day? Are we taxed on it in the US? I cannot find this information anywhere ... Thank you...

So, my understanding is that it is not considered income, but I could be wrong about that. I have an accountant in Canada and one in US that do our taxes in both countries, and both are very familiar with laws across the two, so that will be a question for them next tax season :)

In my case, I'm still having it sent to my Canadian bank account, but on the Direct Deposit form, there is an option to have it sent in US dollars to a US account. I'm assuming it would be exchange rate of the day.

    Hope that helps!

Yes but most of us have not received our extranet credentials yet :(

I'm so sorry to hear that - it's so frustrating. I remember last year checking on here religiously to try to figure out when I'd get my package in the mail, as a US external applicant. No matter what, the waiting part is the worst. Hoping the best for you!

Ah damn!! I guess it's not even by province either then (I don't think anyone at my school's received anything yet? but I obviously wouldn't know for sure). Now I'm wondering if they really did send out most of the winners by now.

I received my news today, but I didn't ever receive an email (outside of my initial extranet credentials yesterday). It was just posted to extranet.

  21. 3 hours ago, MoneyTree said:

OK my department just emailed me (before I even got an extranet access email). I only read the blurb that popped up on my phone. It contains the word "unfortunately." Oh well.

Edit: I'm at UBC in Committee 1.

I'm sorry to hear that. It is super disappointing though. If this helps, I applied 3 years in a row (and last year my scores were dismal) before being successful this year. So, once the disappointment wears off, apply again if you can.

Seems like more direct applicants were notified today and yesterday. I would also guess that direct applicants are less likely to check this forum compared to those of us already in grad studies. So maybe significantly more rejections that simply weren't posted here (success rate for 1st year as been 15%).

Not sure if this helps, but I'm a direct applicant and I was notified today. Maybe that is why some people are finding out and not others.

I'm at Western and just got an email that I was waitlisted. No email login yet though which would be nice to know what position I'm in. More waiting for me I guess.

One year when I was waitlisted, I emailed SSHRC and there were able to tell me my score and my # on the waitlist. Unfortunately, I never made it off the waitlist, but I hope you do! Otherwise, keep applying. I just was successful this year after 3 non-successful applications in previous years.

I'm a direct applicant in the US, applicant ID last 4 digits 0464, I don't know which committee but I am in psych. I received my login info yesterday and results today around 12pm (CDT). No email notifications about the results being available today, I just logged on to check. First time applicant waitlisted with a score of 10.9/20.

It looks like a lot of people are still have issues with logging on and receiving results, that is so frustrating! ? I hope they put us all out of our misery soon.

I'm sorry to hear that you were waitlisted - that's so frustrating! I had that happen to me once. I'm also a direct applicant in the US. Here's some encouragement - I applied 3 times before being successful on my 4th. So don't give up!
