  1. Hi All, I am at a very difficult situation right now. I have been working in the industry for almost 6 years and have a very stable and good paying job. I got accepted into the local public university (ranked 40-50 Nationally) in my field with the option to continue on my PhD Part Time(no funding) . At the same time I also got admitted into my top choice school (ranked in top 6 nationally) with funding. At this school my PhD will be focused more on the very challenging and emerging concepts of national importance in my field. Whereas if I go to local university my PhD will be more relevant to my current job. I am very excited to be admitted to a top school with Funding but the problem is leaving a stable job and moving the entire family (2kids), leave the financial stability and drastically change my family's life style.
  2. There could be cases where you don't get funded for the first year or semester. But to complete your PhD i think you will need to get funded at some point. Some schools decide separately on admission and funding. They first look at who they going to admit in the first place and then they decide who will get funding. You can also contact the department and ask them when the funding decision will be made/announced. Now that you are admitted it will not hurt to ask the department about funding. BTW...congratulation on your admission. UT Austin is a very school in Electrical.....
  3. I also had a very similar question as yours. However, I had contacted the department and they told me that funding decision will be made at a later date. Also the letter did not specified any advisor so i asked who will be my advisor and the department told me that you will select your advisor with the first year. So I asked again, do you think i should contact any potential advisors in my area and she replied doesn't hurt to send an e mail and let them know you are interested in there area........ So Now i am kinda confused if I should e mail them and say hey...i got in....and i am interested in your area/research....and more than likely they'd say yeah we we can talk when you get here.....my reason to contact them now is to possibly get them to take me as a student and have there support in finding funding? What do you guys think.
  4. Hi All, I have been thinking about filling out my FAFSA. However, i am not sure what is the Aid criteria for FAFSA. I am currently working in the industry with a descent salary. My tax returns for previous years show good income. Now if I go to graduate school i will be leaving the job and will no longer have that level of income. Do you know how will this effect mi aid eligibility and what happens if FAFSA guys look at your application and determine that you are not eligible for federal aid. Can this impact your admission decision and/or any aid that university was planning to give to you.
  5. Hello All, So now is the time when decision will be rolling out and yet another stress full era of the graduate school application drama will begin. Many people will be asking the same thing if they should go to a higher ranked graduate school or remain closer to home. (in-state vs out of state, funding etc). I have been wondering about the value (overall education , post graduation placements etc) of going to a higher ranked school. Well if you go to a top 5 school it might be a different story but how about others. Do you think there will be much difference in going from a school ranked in 30s and 40s to a school ranked in 20s. Or between the schools ranked in 11-20 VS 5-10. Is it the brand name that people go after? Is it worth going after the brand name? Any thoughts.
  6. Undergrad Institution: Top 50 US Universities Major(s): Electrical Engineering - Control Systems GPA in Major: 3.6/4.0 Length of Degree: 4 years Position in Class: N/A Type of Student: US Research Experience: MS (non-thesis) in Electrical Engineering. Work Experience in Aerospace Industry ~6 years. Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Deans List etc Applying for [ PhD ] at: Virginia Tech - Aerospace Texas A&M - Aerospace UT Austin - Aerospace Purdue - Aero & Astro UMN - Aerospace ASU - Electrical Engineering UCSB - Electrical Engineering
  7. Even though you applied for MS, i think you should have indicated your interest to pursue PhD. I know some people get funding for MS studies but usually preference is given to PhD students. However, what i know from other people is that usually MS students do get (/can find) funding after one year if they go for thesis. It is a hard call to say if you should attend GaTech or UT Austin without funding or UCLA. There would be a significant cost difference but at the same time both UT Austin and GA Tech are ranked very high for Aerospace.
  8. you don't have much options other than waiting. Wait untill you hear from other schools and then decide.
  9. Any stats on Professors salaries. How much you can expect to make if you become engineering professor after getting a PhD. Also I am trying to understand what the different types position means.i.e. Tenure, Tenure-track etc etc........
  10. I called UT Austin Aerospace admissions office today and told me that first round of decisions will go out in End of March. Thought I'd share this to save you guys a phone call. They also mentioned that if you don't hear back by end of march/early April, it means that your application is still being considered. Good Luck to all.
  11. If you had talked to a prof. back in october/november time frame, and they said i encourage you to apply or your background looks good etc etc......i am pretty sure they don't remember any thing about that. Now don't you think it will be a good idea to send them a quick note reminding earlier conversation so your application gets looked at.
  12. Thank you all for responding the post. I guess at this time the best thing might be, as you suggest, is to sit tight and wait. I agree that the second e mail was not the best idea but i have done the same to others Profs at different institutions and didn't receive a reply at all yet. Regarding faculty replying.......i think it is hard to judge faculty by their e mail response.........some people are really bad at e mail and don't even bother replying. My MS major prof was like that and he also acknowledged that he was bad at replying to e mail. He use to say send me emails but don't expect a reply but I do read them and know what is going on.
  13. Hi, I contacted one Professor in December with my resume and he replied that my background looks good and he will review my application in Jan. So come January i contact him again saying that I hope he had reviewed my application and found it interesting and note about please let me know if there are any question. I get a simple reply back saying: Thank you, No Questions. Now i am wondering what this means. Is that a yes / maybe or more likely a No? Any ideas. I think i should now contact other professors in the same department. Any suggestions. Thanks,
  14. I think you should have a very decent chance at the top scholls. Regarding SOP and recommendation I asked this question direct to my MS advisor (who was a phd from MIT) and his reply was SOP matters alot at top schools such as MIT, Stanford, WashU and Illinois.
