I've also found this to be true, the older we are, I guess the less likely it is we'll get into schools which is very frustrating. One of the programs that I got into is T50, and I'm wondering if it's even worth it to pursue, since eventually I would like to be a professor at an undergraduate institution (vs. for example, going into policy/politics). But I can't imagine doing this again for the 4th time!

Yeah, three is already a ton of work and stress. Best of luck with your decision!

Edited b/c I just saw your signature: I also have a JD! You think that would help.... I do wonder if they see lower JD GPAs and don't understand law school curves, though, since it seems like grad school grades are super inflated.

I feel the same, but getting into Duke is fantastic! I think it's really hard to apply to grad school after working for several years. I applied to nine schools, up and down the rankings based on fit more than reputation, and got a weird mix of responses. If you're only going to get into one school, at least it's a really good one :)

Thanks! I'm more than a decade out from undergrad and am surprised how much that seemed to affect things. And agreed--very happy that for whatever reason a higher ranked school decided I was a good fit!

  3. Yale rejection for me too. Really disappointed, not sure what would've improved my application. (Another poster mentioned bias against older applicants--I only have my own anecdotal experience, but I'm wondering if that's part of what's going on for me. My stats are excellent and I have solid recs from 3 tenured profs, but I've been out of school for more than a decade. Otoh, who knows, and I'm sure my statement of purpose could've been better as I didn't get edits from any poli sci profs or graduate students.) I'm happy with Duke and it's looking like that's going to be my one admit, but this whole process has felt very defeating.

    I got accepted by JHU...

Just out of curiosity...if you are admitted into Duke why do you still bother to check upon JHU? What is your subfield? I mean, at least in Poli Sci, I think, Duke is way better (but of course JHU is also a good school and I am grateful that I got in, but it is just not as good as Duke), and I don't even have the ball to apply to it...

Will you really consider going there if you ve already had an offer from Duke at hand?

@LM2022 I'm a theorist, so JHU is actually slightly higher ranked than Duke. I'd likely choose Duke over JHU even if I got into both (which is looking unlikely!) for a few reasons, but I'd still happily talk to faculty and grad students at JHU. That being said, I take your point, and I think a lot of this for me is just psychological--I want to know where I'm in or not, and I also want to get into more than 1 program (not true yet) so that I at least feel like I have options, even if I already know where I'd rather go. That isn't totally rational, but it's definitely how I'm feeling! (Plus I am very anxious about Yale, which is my true top choice, and feel like getting all these rejections is a bad sign--also not necessarily rational!)

    Hi everyone—

I’m still waiting for results from USC, UCLA, UIUC, JHU, Northwestern, Georgetown and UNC. Should I assume its a reject?? Are any of you guys still waiting from these schools?

I'm still waiting for JHU and Northwestern. I'm assuming a rejection from Northwestern but not JHU (yet). There have only been 2 JHU posts on the results page, and there are usually more acceptances than that each year (2021 was an exception but that may have been a pandemic thing). So I'm holding out hope they're going by subfield and not all the acceptances are out yet. That may be wishful thinking, though.

  6. QQ: if you're invited to an in-person open house by a school where you're admitted and they don't mention reimbursements for travel costs, do you assume that you're paying for your own travel? (Obviously happy to contact the department but I figured this might be one of those things that other people just know and I don't!)

Has anyone else's application portal get updated? Like, the actual layout and appearance of the application status page?

Kinda odd timing in my opinion to update the website aesthetics. Definitely threw me off after refreshing the same web page non- stop.

Yep, mine too. It's much prettier now, but still no decision--agree that the timing is weird!

Great to have others on this thread! Hope we hear good news soon. @pbspoonyes, it does look like we have similar interests!! I've applied to almost the same schools, and also got interviewed at Duke. Haven't heard back from them though, so I'm fearing the worst ?

This may be (very) wishful thinking, but I'm wondering if Duke's theory decisions are coming later. None of the people posting results was a theorist, and last year Duke seems to have released acceptances in two waves: one round on 1/30 and one on 2/8. I also remember that one of the other applicants mentioned interviewing on 1/14, which was substantially earlier than the theory interviews. So I'm really hoping they just haven't released theory results yet! ?? for both of us!

I’m not familiar with Rochester but I can speak to CIR. The CIR curriculum is pretty flexible and you can include quant courses. I would say stats/data oriented people are a minority in the program but you can make it work. For instance, you can take the entire quant methods sequence for PhDs as a CIR student, or data analysis classes at Harris Public Policy, or the game theory sequence in poli sci, etc.

Chicago also has a Masters in Computational Social Science that's data and stats focused: https://macss.uchicago.edu/. 2 years though.

Can someone please help me decide what to do? I indicated on my phd application that I am applying to the dual jd/phd program, but i am not ready to take the lsat so I withdrew my registration and won't be applying to the law school anymore. Should i reach out to the phd admissions and let them know? Is it going to hurt my chances?

I would definitely reach out to the administrative contact on your PhD applications and let them know. It's unlikely to hurt your chances (I don't know for sure, but seems like they wouldn't care?), but it's possible there are administrative things that they will need to do differently because you're not doing the JD. (Like they probably forwarded their decision to the law school rather than the grad school which might hold up/confuse when or whether you get your results.)
