  1. Undergrad Institution: Large State School (Top 40) Major(s): Statistics, Math Minor(s): Computer Science GPA: 3.91 Type of Student: Domestic White Female GRE General Test: Q: 166 V: 158 W: 4.0 GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: N/A Programs Applying: Biostats Masters Research Experience: 2 years in non-stat field. no publications, but got promoted and managed 2 other student researchers Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Phi Beta Kappa, department scholarships, Dean's List, President's List Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Research assistant, private tutor Letters of Recommendation: 1 math prof, 1 (non tenure) stat prof, and my research PI Courses: Calc III (A-), Honors Linear Algebra (A-), Spaces & Functions (pre-req real analysis, A), Intro Stats (A), Regression (A), Intro Math Stats I, II (A), CS 1 (A), Discrete Math (A), CS 2 (A-) Senior year classes without grades: Math Stats I & II, Bayesian Stats, Numerical Analysis, Algorithms, Real Analysis, Optimization Applying to Where: (Master's biostats) Harvard - Admitted / 60 credit Washington - Admitted / Capstone Track UNC - Admitted Michigan - Admitted Minnesota - Admitted Wisconsin - Admitted Penn - Admitted Iowa - Admitted Boston U - Applied Biostat / Waitlisted I'm planning on either attending Wisco or Harvard. My big takeaways/things I'd do differently from this process were: -Worry less about the SOP -Figure out which programs *actually* give funding to master's students -Apply to a mix of biostat & stat programs -Apply to some PhD programs (maybe)
  2. All of the programs I applied to were for master's in biostats. I am mainly looking for info on these schools and wondering how funding works. The schools I've gotten into with full funding: Wisconsin-Madison, my home institution (ranked in the 20's) The schools I've gotten into without funding: Minnesota, Michigan, Washington (capstone), UNC (actually waiting on funding decision, haven't gotten a no yet) My first question is, if I didn't get funding at a school I'm interesting in, what is the process for trying to acquire funding? Cold-emailing professors asking about research opportunities? Cold-emailing the math/stat departments asking if they need a TA? Do I have to accept my admission offer in order to do this? Is it even worth going through the trouble? I would be interested in hearing literally any information/insight on any of the these schools. I'm not worried as much about the city/culture and more about the reputations of the schools and what their graduates do. I'm planning on working after I get my master's, and haven't really decided on a specific job I want. Thanks in advance!
  3. I am applying for master's in biostats programs for fall 2020. Any feedback is appreciated! Undergraduate: Large state university, top 35 public Major: Statistics, Math Minor: Computer Science GPA: 3.91 Type of Student: White Female Relevant Courses: Calculus I, II, and III, Linear Algebra, Spaces & Functions (proofs class pre-req for real analysis), Discrete Mathematics, Numerical Analysis, Linear Regression, Intro to math stats 1 & 2, math stats 1 & 2, Comp sci 1, Comp sci 2 (data structures), Algorithms, optimization techniques, real analysis, bayesian stats, experimental design, math of finance A's in all, A- in Calc 3 and linear algebra, some are upcoming GRE General Test: Q: 166 V: 152 W: 4.0 Research Experience: Research assistant for an education curriculum for 2 years. Most stats done in Excel or SPSS. Attended a couple conferences. Hoping to have a paper submitted by the time apps are due. Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's list all semesters, President's list last year, Phi Beta Kappa, a few departmental scholarships Letters of Recommendation: Professor from research job (knows me very well and will write a great letter), Professor from linear algebra course - knows me somewhat well and should write a decent letter, Visiting prof from math stats class - know just a little bit but did well in course (kind of anxious about this third letter) Additional Experience: Experience working in R, Python, C++, Java, Excel, OpenBUGS, and LaTex. Applying to: Minnesota Michigan Wisconsin UNC Washington Boston Iowa Penn Comments/Questions: Taking the GRE again to try to bump up my verbal score -- I was pretty sick the first time I took it. Looking for feedback on the caliber of schools I should be shooting for.
