  1. Is it a good or bad sign if you aren't admitted, rejected, or wait-listed during the first round of decisions? I'm in this situation with the University of Virginia's PhD in English program. I know people have received letters for all three decisions, but I'm still in the dark. The application portal is still empty as well. Is it frowned upon to contact the graduate director and ask about my status? I've got acceptances with funding for several masters programs, and I've been wait-listed for a PhD with Brandeis, so I'm not overly worried. I'm just ready for that final letter to come in so I can start making a decision!
  2. I am a 4th year English student currently applying to MA and PhD programs. On some applications, they ask "Have you ever been expelled, dismissed, suspended, placed on probation, or otherwise subject to disciplinary sanction by any school, college, or university?" I was suspended from high school for a day due to a situation where I slapped a boy who had been harassing me. Should I include this information? They ask for incidents in "any school," but a singular event that happened over eight years ago seems trivial. There was no arrest, just a single day of suspension. I had no trouble whatsoever in college. Is this information still relevant? How heavily will it impact my chances of admission?
