  1. Congrats guys! I'm really happy for you both. :) I would assume that if you're currently in second year, you'd be getting $20k for 3 years.

...I feel bad saying it, but...I'm actually in my first year, so this is 4 x 20,000 for me...

Thanks everyone for the congrats, and here's hoping you all hear the good news soon too!

Edit: Man, mudlark, yeah. It's a relief, esp. because I found out later that same day that another source of income fell through - if I hadn't won SSHRC three hours beforehand, I would have been devastated.

  2. Thank you!! I really hope that you (and everyone else on this board) hears some good news soon!!

Edit: Also, no word since then. I've asked about value and duration and such, but I think I caught them on lunch hour.

  3. It came by email, and just says:

"I am pleased to inform you that the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council is now in a position to offer you a SSHRC Doctoral Award.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you wish to accept or decline this offer. Upon acceptance, SSHRC will provide you with a Notice of Award to reflect this new award."

  4. It does mean, too, that SpaceJump is still in the running, but I doubt ze wants to hear that.

 It's not that I don't want to hear it - it's good news! It's just that we've all been burned so many times by the whole "in the next few weeks" thing that I'm completely done holding my breath for this year's competition. If my situation changes and I get funding, great! If not, doesn't matter because I'm focused on next year. (Besides, I feel really good about my CV going into next year... 15 conference presentations and 2 publications, wooo!)

That said, I still check this thread about once a week just to see what's what.

  5. I know that I, for one, am done contacting SSHRC for more information. I've assumed that, despite what they've been telling us all summer, there will be no more awards given. My focus now is on my application for next year.

    Best of luck, all!

  6. Who knows with SSHRC anymore, right? *twitch*

I do know that the woman I spoke to is one of two program officers tasked with administering the doctoral awards, so presumably she would know what she is talking about. I am guessing that other POs are saying the hold is still on because they don't want students emailing them... not that this plan seems to be working terribly well, lol.

Here's hoping, I suppose. Did she say why the hold was off? Did more money come in? Other people declining? And she was definitely talking about the doctoral awards, not the post-docs or masters?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but I'm just... discouraged. And I don't take anything from SSHRC at face value anymore.

  7. Yeah. At this point I'm trying not to read too much into messages one way or the other. It's just so frustrating!

I figure as long as no one on the board has heard yet, though, that's something.

  8. Canuck: Did she mention anything about the hold being lifted, like th email Phalene got? I only ask because I had also sent in an email on Friday, and only now got a response, and all it said was "still no news." No specifics on anything.

I'm really trying to keep positive!

  9. It is indeed a frustrating situation. No matter what I was expecting from this wait, I did figure I'd know something by the time September rolled around... Argh!

  10. I'm not harassing beyond the one message that I sent - they just told me that any ones who get bumped up would be added if there's movement.

    So basically, no change.

  11. So I guess that's it, then?

EDIT: I take it back. I bugged SSHRC again and they told me that if there's movement, you get added to the list.

  12. My concern is: Everything I've heard suggests that they didn't get the number of declines that they were expecting. So maybe they overextended themselves in the actual original sending out of awards, and now there's nothing left?

I did check in today as well and from what I've heard, the budget people are back in the office. Beyond that, everything I heard was the same as Canuck.

I dunno. Either way, I'm truly sick of this wait. Time to get going on my new application, I suppose...

  13. EDIT: At this rate, we could be the year that gets royally screwed.

Yeah, at this point, that's pretty much my bet. I mean, I'll keep checking this page for updates, but if absolutely nothing has happened by now...
