  1. It's true! I have heard it so many times since I started my PhD: "You need a sexy idea"; "Oh, that's a sexy topic"; "Can we make it sexier?" Who said academia isn't sexy?
  2. Haha, no, didn't hear from them. After my app went through the University level, I was able to talk to someone who was on the committee that decides, and he told me that. I don't know how relevant it really is though, and he might have just said it to make me feel like I had a good shot... And you're right, I can't imagine anyone at SSHRC saying it. They've been really nice, but also really talented at being vague...
  3. My info. Sorry, forgot to include it earlier: 1. Received CGS. But I got a hold of someone at SSHRC, and she also thinks a mistake was made (since I am in my second year, and shouldn't be eligible), and I will probably be bumped into the other SSHRC. So for those of you on the waiting list for Sociology/Social Sciences, you might get a call! Score: 21.5/30 2. Montreal 3. Letter received: May 7th; Letter postmarked: May 5th; Letter dated: May 3rd. 4. Subject area and/or committee: Sociology 5. Applied from within university 6. Year in PhD studies when you would take up the award (so, what you’ll be in Sept/Oct. 2010): If awarded, 3rd year PhD 7. Taylor, Ross, or Queen's Fellowship?? No 8. Anything else you want to include that might be helpful: - no publications, but 1 conference presentation; also my topic has to do with diasporas and conflicting allegiances, which I was told made it a "sexy" topic (haha, whatever that means)
  4. I've been one of the lurkers. I found this forum to be so helpful over the past few days. Waiting is terrible, and it was great to have others to commiserate with! But I thought that perhaps I should stop being a "guest" and officially join so that I can thank everyone for all their comments and feedback! I just got the letter today in Montreal! I got the CGS, which is a bit suspect because I'm in second year already...Now I'm nervous all over again thinking they made a mistake. Have emailed the fellowship office and SSHRC to find out what's going on before I start to celebrate (or mentally spend money I don't actually have). Anyone run into a situation like this? I was certain you weren't eligible for the CGS if you were in your second year...
