  1. Right now I’m leaning towards UVA, which awarded me a fellowship that aligns perfectly with my research interests, but Tulane nominated me for a great scholarship that, if I get it, will equal the offer made by UVA, so I am waiting to visit UVA and hear back from Tulane before making a decision.
I’ve been accepted to three programs so far; still waiting to hear back from other four (honestly, would rather not have so many more acceptances as I feel it would drive me crazy to have to pick one program out of too many choices, is this weird??

CONGRATULATIONS! That's sounds really interesting! I'm interested in mourning, memory, and trauma in Colombia and how these themes appear in cultural production. I am thinking about visiting...I live in Colombia, so I'm not sure if I can swing it with the budget they provide. I'm waiting to hear from UT-Austin. If I'm accepted there, then I'll have to check out both schools and do visits. Are you waiting on any other decisions?

Thank you so much!! Mourning, memory and trauma are such interesting topics! I am actually interested in these themes too, and would love to do comparative work with Caribbean and Latin American lit. I am on the same boat when it comes to visiting. I live in Peru, so traveling to the US requires planning and a considerable budget. I will be visiting UVA the first week of March, but they are covering all my expenses. I am still waiting to hear from Northwestern, Pittsburgh and Vanderbilt. UT-Austin is a great program, wish you the best of luck with them!!

Thank you! I didn’t have an interview, just received an offer from AG and later last night a “change to your app status” email. What is your research focus?

Hey! After having an interview on Monday with Tulane, yesterday they sent me an admission offer!! My research focus is the representation of the psychological impact of migration in contemporary Caribbean and US Latino literature, what is yours? Are you planning to visit the school?

All the way from Lima?!?! That is awesome. Sorry to hear about Emory though. I don't have too much time to dwell on it really, I am preparing for MA exams on Friday.

I hope that you are getting other amazing offers!

Thank you! Best of luck for your exams! We should chat before UVA's recruitment event.

Just got the official rejection from Emory today... sucks.

However, I got invited to attend the recruitment event at UVA the first week of March. Anyone else going? DO you have more information? All I was told was that everything would be covered but nothing else. When I visited my current institution they sent me a full schedule with the invitation.

Hey, there! I got the official rejection from Emory today as well, but I am trying to focus all my energy on those schools that have sent admission offers or reached out for interviews. I will also be attending the recruitment event at UVA! We are kind of on the same page here ?

The DGS told me that they have prepared a series of classes, talks and meetings for the candidates. They are flying me all the way from Lima, Peru! It should be an interesting couple of days.

Hello! Has someone heard back from Northwestern? I saw a post from someone that claimed that was accepted on February 1st, but I haven't got any news.

Thanks and good luck to everyone!

Hey! I haven't heard back from them either. Not sure if they already sent out admission offers or if they are still in the process of selecting the candidates. Have not heard of any rejections yet, so hopefully there is still time.

Got some good news today! Acceptance from Tulane! Anyone else out there?

Congrats!! Yesterday I got an email from the DGS saying I was among the finalists and I have an interview on Monday. Did you have an interview with them?

Hi Vivian2020! I'm new to this thread...currently freaking out about decisions, but I wanted to comment on your post. I did not apply to UVA for grad school, but I did spend my four years of undergrad there. I absolutely loved LOVED UVA and Charlottesville. I never looked at it as a small city because there were always things to do--cultural events, concerts, sporting events, etc. It is a gorgeous area in the Blue Ridge Mountains perfect for nature/hiking lovers. In terms of distance, its about 2 hours from DC which really isn't that bad if you have a car (I made the drive many times as I'm originally from northern VA). There's also the AMTRAC (train), and I think people still do ride shares. Don't cross UVA off your list if you're worried about Charlottesville because it has much more to offer than what you see on just a google search. Also, UVA is a prestigious school and does attract quite a few big names.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience at UVA and Charlottesville with me. I have been exchanging emails with faculty members and a current graduate student in the Spanish department, and so far everyone has been very welcoming. I’m hoping to attend the recruitment event in a few weeks. Right now their program is high up on my list. They have offered me an interdisciplinary doctoral fellowship which comes with additional funding, and with the opportunity of researching topics related to the Caribbean and its diaspora, which is my main subject of interest. Hope you receive good news soon!! ?

  9. Hey, guys! I got into the PhD program in Spanish at the University of Virginia. They are offering me a really competitive admission package (five years funding plus an interdisciplinary fellowship related to my research interests). I have some doubts about living in Charlottesville, though. If any of you have visited or know anything helpful about UVA and living in this part of Virginia, please let me know. In the meantime, I have an interview with Emory this week (which is one of my top programs) and have been unofficially admitted into the Hispanic Studies program at the University of Houston. Still waiting to hear from Northwestern (also one of my top choices), and a few other universities.

Hope everyone receives good news soon!!

You guys, I received an interview invite for Princeton! I’m over the moon, they’re flying me to campus for two days of meetings and introductions and all that jazz. Wish me luck!

That’s amazing! Congratulations! Did they reach out to you by email?

    Best of luck to all!
