Yeah actually this does tend to be an issue in DoD labs. You often require a lot of administrative approval to start working from home, and in the lab I worked in there were lots of people who simply did not. There is also rarely much budget for admin staff (part-time contractors who are not incentivized to work efficiently), so getting these approvals for remote access to your (unclassified) work can take a long time. However, given that the pandemic started a while before the deadline, I cannot imagine this issue would have been difficult to solve in some way before April 15...

Given the way the application has gone, I wonder if those accepted are able to get some kind of assurance, contractual or otherwise, that they will actually receive the promised funds in timely manner? Were I to get offered the fellowship, I would definitely be looking into this and requesting some type of assurance from the DoD and/or sysplus.

Alternate Hypothesis: What if the date updates are cases where they lost some piece of an application due to "IT issues", and the date updates reflect some update on that profile to try to recover it?

I am in mountain time. This was a few minutes ago. Wanted to share.

It says "NDSEG DoD 2020 Fellowship Class Awards Sent to Recipients" march 20th. May 4th seems to be public announcement after accepts/rejects from recipients, etc.

    Where did you hear that?

I feel like it would reflect really really (even more) terribly on the administration of this fellowship if results do not come out until Wednesday...

Ok what kind of dog is this? It looks literally identical to my late dog.

I emailed sysplus 2 weeks ago with a concern about whether we'd hear by April 15 or not, and never heard back :/. I also just noticed that my proposal is not formatted in the LastName_FirstName format. I hope that was not enough to knock me out of the running (Dec. 6 update still).

As someone who applied in parallel with PhD applications, this wait is brutal because the offer I accept may be contingent on whether or not I get this fellowship. Last update is 12/06. Computer and Computational Sciences, ARO. I have previously worked in research at a DoD lab, and have a master's degree with a high GPA, so I was hoping that I might be competitive.
  11. Hi, As offers are beginning to go out for this admissions cycle, I am faced with a decision and am looking for insight from anyone who knows. I have both academic and industry research experience in Computational Linguistics and NLP. My research interests address linguistics with NLP, and I fit somewhere between CS and Linguistics departments. I now have to decide between offers from a couple CS departments, and Linguistics departments at University of Washington, University of Colorado or University of Illinois. I am wondering if anyone has insight on the quality of these LING departments w.r.t. Computational linguistics (My areas are related to morphology/phonology, and machine learning, and I am interested in cross-lingual, linguistic typology research that intersects with NLP). My worry in joining a LING department is difficulty of finding support for the CS/match side of my interests, as well as job prospects after PhD when compared to a PhD in CS. On the other hand, I am wondering if anyone has advice on choosing between a CS vs LING department in which to do my PhD. Any thoughts/opinions are greatly appreciated! -SomeGuy
