Hi Dogbert, When exactly did you hear from UT Austin? I'm anxiously awaiting their decision
-
I'm super unfocused at work and worried someone will notice that for the past 2 weeks I have been clicking refresh on my email inbox and browsing Grad Cafe. ahhh! There is just ONE school that I'm waiting to hear from. Just that one is all I need..
-
My research interests are concrete, but in my SOP I mentioned that I'm open to other ideas and approaches. I think a lot of people are not certain what exactly they want to do. For example, I rushed into my MPhil immediately after undergrad and ended up in a well-known school, but my fit with the department wasn't great (they were more qualitative oriented and I'm interested in quantitative). I also wasn't sure exactly what area I wanted to focus on, so following my MPhil graduation I took time off to look into specific areas. For my MPhil I focused on tenure and employment, but I realized I'm much more interested in the social determinants of health. I hope your application to UMC is successful, but if not then I would definitely recommend taking a year to research areas. Usually a few good papers in one area will lead you to a bunch of departments, & then you can look at specific profs within each dept. It's also helpful to email the professors whose work interests you.

Rejected by Indiana-Bloomington!! Texas-Austin is my top choice, so I have some hope left

Thanks so much for sharing this. I'm sorry about your app status. Best of luck with Maryland. I'm dying to know now what will happen with my application. Ahhh! Edit: I just double checked my fit with the dept, because in terms of fit it is my favourite dept (Wisconsin-Madison was my other favourite, but I knew it was a long shot & the fit wasn't nearly as perfect). There are 5 profs who are working in the area that I'd like to do research in, and countless others in my general areas of interest, so hopefully I'll make it, I don't have any pubs though Are you feeling confident about your fit with UMC's Soc Dept? Oh, one more question: by "next week" did you mean the rest of this week, or the week of the 14th? Stupid question but I'm obsessing again..
-
No idea. I have been wondering this same question for two long weeks. I spend half of the day crossing my fingers, and the other half of the day pulling out my hair. Did you try emailing Evelyn (the grad coordinator)? I emailed her but received no response. Some other applicants emailed her and heard back rather quickly. Only one acceptance was posted on this site, so I'm hoping for some good news.. Edit: On the other hand, if you look at last year's results for Austin then things don't look too great for us. Last year there was a wave of acceptances around Jan 29th and then a wave of rejections around Feb 10th. Sorry, I know I'm not of much help
-
No worries! I was just being crazy and trying to estimate my chances of getting in. On second thought, I'd like to take back my request I'm trying to mellow out now; no more obsessing over the outcome of my apps! P.S. Good luck!

Meh, I think it's time I accept the silence as a rejection. Pretty sad because the fit was perfect. On a happier note, I started a new role with my old employer and I'm enjoying it much more, so there might be hope for me in the private sector
-
Sorry to hear that, Bonkers

Hi Bar, Any more information from UT-Austin? Did they let you know how many acceptance letters they sent out or the expected incoming cohort? Thanks
-
Today I've spent a lot less time on this forum, which I find helpful. Constantly checking the results page seems to increase my anxiety.
-
I'm grouchy and tired of waiting. I feel like giving up (which might be a good thing bc maybe then I'll stop checking my application status, checking the results page, and checking this forum) Update: This made me feel better (from another thread): Tiglath-Pileser III : "There seems to be two rounds of rejections. The early rejections often come before the acceptances and are done to cull out the candidates that really don't have a chance of getting into the program. This is often done by administrators to narrow the candidate pool to a reasonable size for the admissions committee. These early rejections often go out a month or two before the bulk of decisions are made. Interview invites often go out during these first round of rejections. It's hard to say anything definitive about the interview process because departmental policies vary so widely here. It's usually really a bad sign to be included in this first round of rejections. Often the second round of rejections goes out after all the acceptance offers are made, although a few applications may be wait-listed quietly pending offers being accepted/rejected." Maybe we'll all be okay

I'm also going crazy.. Actually, I'm more relaxed when I'm not at work. I keep busy by heading to the gym and visiting friends/family. It's being at work in front of two computer screens that is driving me crazy. Way too many opportunities to click refresh! Totally distracted from my day job.
-
I check my UT status every hour between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm (I'm not even exaggerating. I work in market research so I'm sitting in front of a computer all day) and it still says "We have received all credentials required to process your application. Your file has been forwarded to the Graduate Committee for review". I really anxious to hear from UT!
-
Good luck with the interviews! Would you two mind posting your stats? Harvard is a long-shot for me but I'm still curious to see how I look compared to the other applicants
-
Well, one down, 7 to go! Bye bye Wisconsin-Madison
-
Hurray! Good luck!

No! I'm dying. Texas-Austin was supposed to email us the results this month but I haven't heard from them. I emailed the graduate coordinator and she didn't respond, but a few days later (according to the results page) someone else emailed her and received a rejection. I'm pretty anxious about the whole thing... especially because I have the feeling that if I can't get into Texas-Austin's Sociology department then my only chances are Case Western and UBC I wish I hadn't looked at the results page!
-
That happened with me and Texas-Austin! I emailed the grad coordinator just to be sure, but it looks as though I'll be getting a rejection. By the way, I applied to Indiana-Bloomington too I'm pretty happy with my application. This is my second round of applying. I applied during my MPhil in England, but at that time I wasn't sure what I wanted to do and I threw together my applications at the last minute. This time I spent a good year deciding what area I'd like to focus on (Sociology of Health), and researching universities, revising my SOP, etc. There are many people out there with amazing applications though, so I'm not 100% sure I'll get in.
-
Are there any other Phd Sociology applicants hitting refresh on the forum site and on their email inbox? Unfortunately I'm at the office all day sitting in front of two computer screens, so I have more than enough opportunities to check this website and my email  I can't help but notice all of the responses for psych, bio, and chem PhDs, but very few responses for the Sociology applicants!

Hi, I've been studying for the GRE for about 2 months now (while working FT) and it seems as though my quant. progress has hit a wall. I consistently score in the 50th-59th percentile range (PowerPrep), and can't seem to get past this score range. I completed the "Kaplan's GRE Exam Math Workbook" and Peterson's "Master the GRE" (I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, though it is useful for building up test stamina), and I'm finishing up "Kaplan's GRE Advanced Math". I'm also trying to focus on my weaknesses (such as algebra) by doing extra questions online. Has anyone else hit a wall in terms of their quant score? Any tips or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks. EDIT: I just found this thread which is helpful, but I would still appreciate some advice.
