  1. Anyone here declining or deferring their acceptance to UofT's 2-year MSW? Hoping to be able to get accepted off of the waitlist this year. Super discouraging having it be the 3rd time being waitlisted.
  2. I was in the same situation last year! I was accepted to Humber but waitlisted at UofT. I'm glad that I went ahead and accepted Humber's offer as when September had come around is when I heard back and ultimately got rejected from UofT. Had I not accepted Humber's offer, I'm not sure what I would have been doing this year. There is also no way of the school you applied to for the MSW to know that you have accepted an offer to a college, so I say go for it!
  3. That is good to know because I also live in Mississauga, glad to see that there are others out there finding ways to manage the drive. The placements I have had in the past have been the same way, good to know that doesn't change! Thank you!
  4. Thanks for the info! I'll definitely keep your offer in mind if I choose to go that route! I know my program had a lot of the courses but I know I'll have to double check as it was a bachelor of applied science degree that I got. I also got my SSW at the same time through my undergrad at Guelph-Humber so I'm hoping i've met the requirements already! The biggest incentive for me is that I can then apply for the 1 year msw. It's just hard because I live about an hour away from waterloo (without traffic) and I can't afford moving away. I know the website says it's in person but I'm wondering if they have an online or hybrid option that would allow me to stay at home.
  5. Hey! The program I was looking at specifically is through Waterloo! Here's the link to their website: https://uwaterloo.ca/school-of-social-work/future-students-bsw-ft
  6. I was considering doing a 1 year BSW but I don't have the money to go away from home which is something I'd have to do as the 1 year BSW is offered quite far from where I live.
  7. Personally for me, it's a matter of distance and the fact the UofT has a lot of sway on getting good placements in Toronto including hospitals.
  8. I have. I've had a professor from a different faculty look it over. He teaches at UofT himself, he said himself I have a solid application so I'm not sure what I'm missing at this point. I know my GPA isn't the greatest being at 3.7 but I've seen others get in with lower. I'm really at a loss
  9. Same to you! Hopefully, we'll all get some good news before the start of the school year.
  10. Haha hello! I figured there had to be a few people from the program here! I'm tempted to stop too but for the career I want for myself, I have to keep at it. Motivation is not easy to keep after 3 waitlists though.
  11. Yes I am. Doing Addictions and Mental Health
  12. If it helps, I was waitlisted the last two years at UofT and ultimately got reject both times just after the beginning of September.
  13. Waitlisted UofT 2 year, last name H. This is the 3rd time being waitlisted, I'm not hopeful. I added over a year and a half of paid work experience in the field, and in progress doing a post-grad certificate, and still only waitlisted.
  14. My last name starts with H and still says under review.
  15. Hey! Sorry for a late response. I didn't choose it opposed to an SSW program. It is a post-grad certificate program as I already have my SSW diploma as well as a applied sciences degree in family and community social services. I graduated from University of Guelph-Humber where I did a degree and diploma at the same time. Since I had my doubts about getting into UofT for my MSW I decided to also apply to the post-grad certificate program. It is only a one year (3 semester) program that you can only take once you have completed undergraduate studies.
  16. My guess is that they won't post that information until late July or during August. I don't remember when it was posted this time.
  17. To anyone on the waitlist for UofT, did you ask Angela what the progress of your application was? I want to know where I stand (even though I've already accepted Humber College's offer for the addictions and mental health program) and see if maybe there is a chance I get in this year since I was waitlisted last year and then ultimately rejected in mid September.
  18. With a lot of fields, I would agree but when it comes to social services there will always be a need. However, I do think that based on environment some will be harder. I think any job involving the homeless, addiction, and some jobs tailored to mental health will be easier to get but it will most likely be front line work with lower pay (if that's something that makes a difference for you), the jobs that are more clinical as well as more desk jobs will be harder to come by. in other words, you're going to have to get your hands dirty. I'm not sure how volunteering is going to work either though because there is always a huge demand for volunteers but if people are still somewhat fearful it might be difficult to find places willing to take volunteers.
  19. I also applied to Laurier, York and a few colleges last year but got waitlisted at York and rejected at Laurier and accepted into 3 colleges (Humber, Georgian, Conestoga). This year I only applied to UofT and Humber as I realized those are the only places that match what I want to do. I've been accepted to Humber College Lakeshore for a 1-year post-grad certificate in addictions and mental health and once I saw that I was waitlisted for UofT, I went ahead and accepted Humber's offer. I'm not a fan of online at all so I hope the pandemic has settled by September but if it doesn't I'm willing to do online as I am hoping to apply to UofT again and want to strengthen my application further.
  20. It's at Humber Lakeshore if that makes it a bit easier, I know the ride still would not be the greatest though. I'm not too sure about private college's. Personally I won't go to one as the tuition tends to be a bit heavier and from what I've heard from friends who went to private, they had a lot more difficulty finding jobs as private schools aren't as recognized and there's a stereotype that people that come from private colleges didn't earn a proper qualification, they just paid for it. I don't believe in that stereotype myself but I do think it's harder for other institutions to take them seriously. I only have one friend who found a job after going to a private college, but she went for massage therapy which is not as big as the social services field. I also find that paid experience in the field looks better on a post-graduate application (which is why I worked the year since I had been accepted to Humber last year and turned it down to work instead). I also find that financially, working made more sense to me for my situation as I knew I would be going back to school. If the private college gives you a lot of practical experience, it would still strengthen an application in the future and any added education also strengthens that application but I think the name of a private college will hinder you (just my opinion based on my experiences, others may have different opinions on the matter).
  21. I'm pretty sure that deferring means they will hold a spot for you next year. Don't quote me on that for sure though, I would contact Angela just so you get the information straight from the source.
  22. Hi, so I got waitlisted for this year so I can't say too much with how classes might be run that but I am currently working at a nursing home and we are planning for the worst. Right now, we are only allowing staff and contractors essential to resident care into the home. We have also halted hiring unless it is for PSW's as they are always needed. We do not have any practicum students at the undergraduate level or even the graduate level. I believe that practicum is going to be quite difficult as I know from here, we are probably going to stay like this until June or July if not longer. I think it'll also depend when the virus peaks and when they come out with a working vaccine which I believe is not estimated to be done for at least another year. I don't think you're overreacting for thinking about deferral, in fact I think it's great that you're planning for what type of education works best for you. We have a long and hard road ahead and I'm sure with whatever option you go with, as long as you believe it is in your best interest, go for it.
  23. Hey, so I also got waitlisted last year and now again this year. Over the course of this past year I took the time and ended up finding a job in the field. I am now also planning for the future again (as I not optimistic about getting acceptance) so I will be going to Humber college for a 1-year addictions and mental health post-grad certificate. If you're interested in that field I know that their applications for January start is still open.
  24. I checked SGS first but about 15 minutes later I also saw that I received an email.
  25. Edit: Ijust heard back on SGS and got waitlisted. I haven't heard back yet either. I applied last year as well and got waitlisted but I've been seeing people are already getting waitlisted. I'm assuming the worst in that it looks like I'm not getting in this year:/
