  1. Thanks for the response! The first department is historically ranked only a bit higher than the second one. But, the university as a whole, the first is more prestigious. That impression of the professors being hard to get a hold of, comes from talking with two of their students and my advisor who is one of the professors' research collaborator. One of the students said that that could be a great trait though, that they push you hard, and make you more independent of a researcher.
  2. Hi all, I am torn between two departments. First is good with professors who are working in the same line of research I want to work on, but they are mostly old (60 to 65+). Not sure if they would be around for too long. I don't find the research profiles of the younger professors very interesting.... yet! Second is slightly lower-ranked department but I really LOVE the work of two people working there, and who are renowned in the field. They aren't young and aren't old either... say, around 40-year-old associate professors. However, they have the reputation of not giving a ton of time to their students and expecting way too much from them. Considering these two factors only, do you think the latter program would be worth it?
  3. Hi all, I have to decide where to do PhD in Econ with minor in Stats between these two places. I am going to industry jobs after I graduate, and so I don't think the dept ranking matters as much as when going for academia. So I guess it all boils down to the reputation of the two universities. Which university do you think has better reputation, overall university-wise, outside their home states? I would ideally go live in California where my partner is from, but would like to live in D.C. or New England after I graduate. Thanks!
  4. Hi all, wondering if there is a direct public bus connection between UGA and the international airport at Atlanta?
  5. That's great! Thanks for the information, both! How is the downtown like? Are there nice places for hanging out, music, arts and galleries, etc., or do you definitely need to go to towns like Christainsburg and Roanoke? How accessible are places like Costco and Walmart from the town?
  6. Hello guys, I am considering going to Virginia Tech for Ph.D. this Fall. For those who have been there, how is Blacksburg, VA? I heard since it's in the Appalachians, there will be a lot of good hiking opportunities. Since I'm into the outdoors, I am considering this factor as well. Previously, I went to Bozeman, MT for school mostly for the outdoors. Also, how are the people and the culture there? Is it the Southern type? More of a mix between the South and NOVA? How detached or influenced is it from the D.C. metro? I have not looked into the housing options yet. What would be the best options both inside and outside (but near to) the campus? What should be the price range? Moreover, I currently don't have a car, and won't be having a car for the first semester. In that case, how easy is it to get around places without a car? Is the public bus system reliable? Thanks so much in advance! (P.S. My other options are UGA in Athens, GA, and may be Kansas State in Manhattan, KS. I am also really drawn toward choosing UGA for the location/culture/arts-scene factor.)
  7. Spycrab, with your previous posts, I thought you were applying to an Econ PhD and getting into a top-ranked school.
  8. Hey, hi Mahmouddjeb! I got fully funded offers from Virginia Tech, Kansas State, Georgia, and Connecticut. I got an interview from Florida just a few days ago, and a rejection from Michigan State. Given my interests in international agricultural development, for now it's a toss between Virginia Tech and Georgia.
