  1. For anyone that has applied to Greece, I just spoke with Rachel Holskin and she said the letters are being mailed out today. Does anyone know if these letters come from the host country or the US?

The final authority on all decisions is the President's Fulbright Commission's. So the decisions will come from the US.

  2. I think I am actually beginning to find this disconcerting for once. It definitely ranks low in terms of first impressions. If they don't send the results by the end of the week, then they are essentially giving us less than two weeks to decide. I mean look at the admitted students day - the day before all decisions are due. I am seriously thinking that if I do not get the official notice in the mail by Friday that I will reconsider SIPA as my top choice for the fall.

  3. Why would their spots not open at HKS if they decided to go to WWS? And if there is anything I can do to convince you to give up your spot just let me know

Haha sorry I misread. I thought you were referring to spots at WWS opening up. I didn't apply to HKS :) Too bad there isn't a referral system where someone who turns down a spot could nominate someone else.

  4. Well its encouraging to hear from younglions, MCneelified and a few others who will probably go to WWS, thereby giving some hope to us on the waitlist. I thought that might be the case.

Wouldn't their decision to go to WWS actually work against you since their spots would not open? For what it is worth, a spot just might open as I am still teetering back and forth on my decision.

  5. In here. I only applied to 3 schools and 5 schools of public helath (interested in health policy). Also in at Harris (full ride) and rejected from Berkeley.

    Awaiting aid...

Sounds like we had similar ideas this application season. I also applied to PH schools. How did you fare with your applications, and have you decided where you will attend?

  6. DC is the place to be for international affairs for reasons like networking, internships, exposure, etc.

But what do you do when your best package comes from Fletcher in Boston? I can't decide how heavily to weigh location as I sort through my options (elliott with $, SAIS, SIPA, American). I'd rather not attend a school without financial support because I think I'll get where I want with each school but my mind is not made up. I went to the Peace Corp after spending a couple of years in the private sector. I am interested in economic development and geographically drawn to Africa. In a way I think I would benefit from more exposure to the options in DC but I just don't know.

Anyone have any thoughts on the DC location factor?

I say go with the school that gives you the best financial package. There is no point in accruing a heavy debt load for the degree, especially since it may affect the types of jobs you will look for after graduation. Fletcher is a good school and has a nice alum base in the DC area, and they are tight knit from the ones I know. Besides for purposes of networking, you could always do an internship in DC during the summer if it is possible.

  7. Technically you need a masters to start the program at UNC (it's in their PhD handbook), so you might want to inquire about how strict they are about that.

Good point Rutabaga. Are you bound to the NC area? You may want to consider branching out and apply to other schools that do not require a masters before going for the doctorate.

  8. I currently have a Bachelors Degree in Nursing from Case Western Reserve University, have been working for two years now at a health department, and am debating between an MPH or a PhD in Public Health. My ideal is applying for the PhD Health Policy & Management program at UNC (focus in health prevention & quality assurance/economics), and would like your feedback on two things...

    1. Is a bachelors candidate with a good GPA (3.7) and two years (3 upon application) of PH experience too overzealous to think he has a shot at a PhD program?

    2. Have any of you found the "overqualified" stigma with a PhD Public Health?

My main reasons for the BSN --> PhD and not an MPH is that a) I will eventually want a doctorate, and B) I would like to finish my education in the next 5 years, and cannot fit both a MPH and a PhD (not to mention if such a combination is not practical due to material overlap?)

If you ultimate wish is to get a PhD, then go for it. You could always apply for a few MPH programs as backup. I think your credentials are perfectly fine and if you are really a male nurse, the schools would sop you up like bread sopping up soup  I only have one year of "proper" public health experience and two years of auxiliary health experience and I was successful in being admitted to a doctoral program this season.

My ultimate goal is to do something like what I am doing now: working with people. Direct practice so to say. I always worried that having a doctorate would over qualify me for what I wanted to do. I would suggest you tack on courses and projects in program creations, evaluation, and grant writing during your studies. That way you will be able to create a program and define your role within it. That has been my saving grace recently. And besides you could also teach with the doctorate.

    So go for it!!!

  9. FSIA, heard anything yet?

all is silent on my front still :-(

Silent on my end as well. I am a bit disappointed that schools would give applicants so little time to mull over decisions. If it is anything like the other school at CU I applied to, they already made their decision, but just have not communicated it to you yet.

Disappointing really. I call it the "top" school effect, where top schools figure they can do this because they figure if you get mad and turn them down, there would be a slew of others ready to jump to the admissions decision.

  10. So I will be going to school in a pricey city. I don't know what sort of stipend I will receive yet, but I will be attending a master's program. However, I've been advised that I should start tackling the housing question ASAP. It seems like I could get a studio apartment (1 bedroom) for just under $700/month. That's the cheapest I see. I would really rather not share (a two bedroom) with a stranger although I know people do it all the time. The $700 would include water, but nothing else. Is it ridiculous to hope for a stipend that would allow me to do that? I just have no idea what people generally pay for housing in cities...Oh and we're talking about unfurnished.

Depending on the city, $700 seems reasonable. You will also need to factor in utilities. Depending on your gas and electric use, around $70 to $150 a month. But you should check the local utility company for their average rates based on usage.

Do you have the opportunity to work the summer before you start? Savings from that may help alleviate some of the initial moving costs. Also, you may want to ask friends and family if they could pitch in for, or donate furniture. Check with your university on sites to go to where students sell furniture for whatever reason. You could catch a lot of beginning and end of the term sales on items.

  11. rising_star, what do you mean by "other units" ? Other departments?

Assuming you are talking about Teacher's College, then yes other departments within Columbia. Depending on what skills you have or what you can do, you could see if any other departments would be willing to extend an x-ship to you in case funding at the school does not work out. I have known quite a few people to do this successfully.

  12. I know many of you missed the virtual eight ball, which has provided guidance for and comfort to many of us. (Okay, just me.) I have asked it if MPP people will hear from HKS tomorrow. According to the eight ball:

    "My sources say no way."

Please keep in mind that virtual eight ball has had a 75 percent success rate this season.

Ugh that eight ball again. Well it was on the money about that hot date I had, but it still sucks

  13. Yes, I did. It's a new concentration that was introduced in autumn 2008. I spoke to them about my concentration choice beacause my interest is quite interdisciplinary (economic development and democratisation). I read this at some point: http://harvardcitizen.com/2008/09/17/hk ... entration/

Thanks for the link. It is interesting. Either way good luck! It seems like there will be quite some competition since a lot of people are interested in the concentration.

  14. I wonder what the odds are of getting a WWS rejection and an HKS acceptance. So far I only know people who got into WWS (and all other shcools they applied to) but not HKS - never the other way around.

I saw a couple instances from last year on the board where folks were turned down from WWS but taken in at HKS. While we are at it, did anyone here apply for the IGA concentration at Kennedy? I did not see that option until early this year even though it was offered at the beginning of the school year. It carries a lot of funding with it.

  15. Sorry, forgot to include that a quite a few people who deferred last year will be entering this year. I don't have the document right now, but it's somewhere between 10-13.

Boy do I feel stupid. Until your post, I was reading the 13 deferrals as 13 applicants waitlisted. Man I need to knock some sense into myself :!:

  16. Question now is... when/how will I find out about loans? I have submitted my FAFSA already.

You should be able to do the loan part yourself. I was messing around today and logged into my account on Syracuse's myslice system. I still have not received a financial award notice, but it gave me the option of choosing various types of loans and even a breakdown of costs for the degree.

If you received your SSUID number already, then you should be able to create an account in the system.
