One of my friends got rejected three days ago.

Is it common for (electrical) engineering majors to go to applied physics phd programs? I am interested in solid state devices etc. and have taken advanced coures in physics, but havent taken the physics subject GRE. Are my chances of admission to applied physics significantly lower than electrical engineering?

Hi, I am an international student applying to PhD programs in the US. Some universities say that they do not require a TOEFL score from international students who studied at universities where the language of instruction is English. I suppose this includes the English speaking universities outside English speaking countries. I am studying at a university where English is the language of instruction. Does this mean it is absolutely OK not to submit a TOEFL score, or should I still send a score to strengthen my application?

I am trying to choose universiites for EE PhD. My area of specialization would be solid state and photonics. Which UC campuses are good in this area?
