  1. Hi everyone, What is the "normal" number of schools to apply to for PhD programs in stat/biostat? I feel like I would fit well in about 15 schools I've researched, but this might be too much work for me and my letter writers.
  2. Hi everyone, I'm applying to stats and biostats PhD programs this semester. How does it look if my letters of rec are from a tenured math professor (research advisor), a lecturer (took multiple advanced math courses with them), and my manager who works at a national laboratory? The first two will be very strong and the last will be reasonably strong, but I"m worried that I only have one letter from a full professor. Thank you.
  3. Hi everyone, I'm applying to stats/biostats PhD programs for fall 2021. My end goal is a PhD, but is it worth it applying to some "safety" MS programs? I know for some fields if you apply to the PhD program, they might admit you to the MS program if they feel you're not strong enough for a PhD yet. Is this true for stats/biostats programs or does it depend on the university?
  4. Hi everyone, I'm applying to stat/biostat PhD programs this fall. I'm debating between taking a public health applied statistics class or a multivariate analysis class. I'm leaning towards taking the applied statistics class, but would admissions committees look at multivariate analysis more favorably? I am not taking any other math classes this term. Thanks!
  5. Hi, How does it look when an applicant doesn't submit GRE math subject test scores to a program that "highly recommends" it? Will my application be ignored or not given as much attention because they're not part of my application? Thanks in advance!
  6. Hi everyone, I'm applying to statistics/biostatistics PhD programs in fall 2020, and I'm planning to take the calculus based statistics course in spring 2021. I know that a lot of programs require this course as a prerequisite, but could I still apply to programs before I take it? I'm concerned that they won't be able to see my grade in that class and might think that I'm not prepared enough for a PhD. Should I address this in my statement? For context, I'm a math major at a state school. I have taken a lot of upper division math courses (including probability theory, linear algebra, real analysis) and a couple of upper division applied statistics courses. Thank you in advance!
