  1. Thank Chumlee I can clearly define the research problem and the future contribution if this can be solved, but I can't come up with a method for the research problem without doing some prior research. So In this case, what should I put into my statement of purpose? Should I only mention about my early plan to investigate the topic?
  2. Hi, my name is Rote. I am applying to grad school in the field of computer science, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence. I have a research question that I want to pursue, but I just don't know how much details I should put into my SOP. I tend to think of it as a short version of research statement or at least an introduction of a thesis proposal, but it stills difficult to fit details into my paragraph. What points should I make to demonstrate my understanding in the topic while remain brief in the statement? Should I mention about what approaches I intend to use or how am I going to come up with a solution? Thanks you in advance!
  3. Hi everyone, I'm applying for PhD in the U.S (Fall 2011). I really appreciate if you could take a look at my profile and give me some advices on whether I should retake the GRE. I just finished the GRE and I blew it: 370V, 800Q, waiting for my writing score, but my expectation is 4 or 5. I am so disappointed with my verbal score. Anyway, here is my background. - 3.34 GPA (undergrad in Computer Engineering) - Finished my master degree from the same department within one year. - 2 years working experiences as a programmer. - done some research during my undergrad and master on speech recognition, natural language processing, AI, and data mining. - published a paper in an international conference, which is considerably the best in its field. - TOEFL iBT: 100 (Reading 25, Listening 27, Speaking 20, Writing 28) I am looking at the top 20 schools and a few top 10 schools for a PhD in Machine Learning (e.g. CMU, Cornell, Berkeley, UC Irvine, USC, Stanford, etc.) My GRE scores worry me because I am an international applicant. Should I retake the GRE? Thanks for reading this.
