Really? I got my mail today in Minnesota and so did a friend. I was not successful. I'm so upset. I'm only in my first year though so I will try again. WAHHHHHHHHHHHH
-
I'm in the midwest too. I'll post as soon as I hear something. I'm hoping for tomorrow!

Anxiously awaiting the mail here in the US.
-
No SSHCR mail in the US today. I wonder if it's worth calling.
-
Agreed. Americans definitely know about it.
-
Given that it's so short, I wouldn't think of including a "lit review" as a section in your proposal, but rather weaving in your knowledge of the field within your explanation of your own project, which is what they are interested in.

Nothing in the mail today. Boo.
-
Where in the US are you? Okay, I just saw that you're in Arkanasas. Hmmm. I wonder if mail takes longer to you than to me in Minnesota.
-
Anyone in the US get their mail yet today? I'm in the Midwest and it hasn't come yet. I'm thinking it'll be here in the next few hours. It's so weird just thinking the decision is OUT THERE!

Can someone explain the May vs. September start date? I am currently in my 1st year of the PhD, so if I get SSHRC (praying/fingers crossed/knocking wood), I will get it for 3 years. I just assumed it starts in September, but it would be amazing to have the money before the summer. What are the pros/cons? Why would it start in May anyway? Thanks. Sorry if this is a stupid question.

I'm also in the Midwest. The mail hasn't come yet today. GAH! This waiting is torture. Pure torture.

Congratulations, everyone!!! I'm so antsy to get my letter. (I'm in the US and anticipating Saturday or Monday) Okay, I HATE to do this, but for those of you who heard via mail, was it a thick or thin envelope? Also, let's stop calling it a "small" SSHRC. It's a LOT of money, especially if you are in the US and have your tuition covered.

I'm in the US too and I wouldn't be surprised if they did arrive by the end of the week or Monday if they get sent out today or tomorrow (especially considering the postal service works on Saturdays here). I'm often quite shocked at how quickly things arrive in and from Canada. Guys, I have two 20 page papers due Monday and Tuesday, a whole bunch of undergrad grading AND I leave for a 4-day trip to Chicago next Friday. SSHRC better get here before then! I need to make decisions about my apartment this summer and living arrangements for the fall, ALL of which depend on SSHRC.

Does the school distribute the payments if you are in the US? Seems weird to me.

Do people have any experience using QWest for internet?

Carnegie Mellon's Literary & Cultural Studies accepted 3 people this year. -
Is it possible to get a studio/efficiency or 1 bedroom for $600 or under? Also - I heard that the Northeast was cheap but based on Craig's List it seems more expensive than Uptown. Is Craig's List not the best for apartment hunting in Minneapolis? Also - when would be a good time to look for apartments for August 1st? Should I come in late June/early July? Will a 3 day visit be enough time to secure a place? Thanks in advance.

for the people in pittsburgh or familiar with it: is getting a one-bedroom apartment in a decent area possible for under $600? i should add that i don't necessarily care about being super close to campus (30 minute walk or bike ride is okay by me) but i do care about being in a neighborhood with a decent cafe, grocery stores/markets, interesting types of buildings/houses to live in, a sense of community. i'm from a major city that has lots of little neighborhoods and i'd like something similar.

ha, ha, ha. i think we know each other from another frequented site....

what would you say is the word of mouth reputation of this program? i am not american, and had not heard much about it before i started doing research on grad schools. the faculty interests fit well with mine, though.

Is it true that there is lots of crime?

i just got my acceptance! it came via a phone call (i missed it) and email. i called back and had a brief chat with the DGS. they are sending information out via mail early next week and are having a visiting day on april 3rd.

Hmmm, it seems affordable to me when I look at craigslist ads. i am however, coming from a large city with crazy rents.
