  1. I'm so glad things are working out well for people this season! As for me, I think Texas is a really great fit for my studies and they offer a lot of opportunities for teaching experience - but it will all come down to funding. I'm pretty much set at UGA, so I'd have to see a very positive offer from UT...which I'm sure will come in the mail one of these days! (fingers crossed)
  2. I was accepted to the University of Texas last week, but haven't heard about funding. I saw that some people posted about Berkeley...my status is still "submitted", so I'll take that as my cue to mark it up as a rejection. Anyone else heard news?
  3. Hi all, Athens, GA is looking like a definitely possibility for me this Fall. I grew up in a college town, currently attend a program in a college town (Chapel Hill), and really dig the possibility of attending a PhD program in another college town. Any advice on apartment hunting (location location location!), prices, public transit, parking situations, local culture, music culture, football, etc.? Thanks in advance!
  4. That was me. I was emailed on Wednesday night to do a phone interview either Thursday or Friday, and I spoke to one of my POI's about my research and interest in the program. I was told they were trying to choose from candidates that were on their short list, but I don't know much more than that. Friendly conversation, it seems like a tight-knit department for sure.
  5. Funding is the rub, isn't it? Crossing my fingers for you. Hearing early is good, though, and probably bodes well for funding!
  6. AAAHHHH. Brown, Stanford, Northwestern...Berkeley, where are you? I know it's still early, but I'm still being driven slightly insane.
  7. Vicki, that's great! Congratulations, your wait is half over!
  8. UGA - I am not sure when their actual deadline is, but I submitted my materials pretty early in December. Not a word from UT, though.
  9. Congrats, Morse ! Good luck at the interview, that is a wonderful opportunity. I was kind of surprised how early people have been hearing this year, and re: bamamama, I don't think Berkeley does interviews, but only based off of what I have seen on TGC...let the wait continue!
  10. Hi all, Wondering if anyone has heard from Berkeley for their TDPS program. Traditionally (according to TGC) it looks like they accept students in late Jan., has anyone gotten a positive phone call or some other word? Additionally, anyone else hear from anywhere?
  11. I was just dreading the conference/application circuit again...I love what I do, but it would be nice to be in a program for what I love to do, instead of trying to juggle it alongside of employment/other master's programs. @Vicki, that sounds like a good freelance gig! Definitely good for keeping you in the loop if you need to wait another year. Which won't happen, because we will all get into programs and be fully funded. I'm trying this new thing called "positive thinking". @Robin, I know that limbo all too well, waiting and waiting and applying and then still waiting. It's hard to believe that I was in this same position only two years ago, and it's even harder to remember what it felt like to finally know where I was going to grad school the first time around! I always want to go on that fabled cross-country road trip, visiting weird little museums (the Ava Gardner museum is a personal favorite). Got any locations in particular picked out?
  12. UGH. SO MUCH WAITING. Does anybody else have contingency plans? I'm actually finishing up my master's in library science and trying to apply to jobs in science/federal librarianship while I wait...it's really hard to pretend you would *love* to work at an institution when you're actively waiting to hear back from PhD programs. At least it's something to do besides wait!
  13. Still haven't heard anything on my end, but has anyone else had the same frustrating experience of having your friends/significant others/etc. ask "when will you hear back?" and "when do you think you'll hear about funding?" - I know they mean no ill will...but I wish I had an answer for them!
  14. Hi everyone, I am not applying to an M.F.A. in Directing, but I am applying to several PhD in theatre/performance studies programs (UC-B, UT, UGA). I've also noticed the lack of visible theatre/performance types, but I'm glad to know I'm not the only one! I am from the Pittsburgh area, so I know a little bit about the Carnegie Mellon/Pitt/Point Park business, but probably not enough to be helpful. I know the theatre scene in Pittsburgh is pretty active and broad, so it is a GREAT town to pursue theatre studies in. Good luck to everyone! I am having a hard time not neurotically waiting now that all of my applications have been submitted...if I get accepted, I can stop half-heartedly looking for jobs that I don't want...if I don't hear back early...well... We'll all hear back really, really soon! Really!
  15. Hi there, I go to a state school and currently have a midrange 3.8. After taking a math class this summer I will probably go down to a midrange 3.7 because I really don't see myself passing with higher than a D or a C. I have a solid 3.8 in my English/Creative Writing major, and a 4.0 in my Theatre/Playwriting major and am looking to apply to schools straight out of undergraduate for my PhD in English Literature. I've got the requisite coursework, two study abroad experiences, three publications (one creative, two academic), and a national and several regional conferences under my belt. Clearly, my focus has not been on getting solid As in science and mathematics coursework, but rather on professional preparation for graduate school. I've yet to take the GREs but the schools I am applying to use them largely (supposedly) as a last resort sorting method. I'm just afraid of getting a D in my math class and having my 3.8 shot to hell. Will my background experience in academia, strong letters of recommendation and a solid writing sample and personal statement help overshadow that? I am applying to several large state schools like Florida, Minnesota, and Arizona State, but am also throwing applications the way of WashU and Brown. Could a somewhat shoddy GPA kill my chances in a first-round sort of applications? Thanks for your help, everyone. -boston
