  1. Since I'm still torn between Political Science and Sociology, I'm thinking of applying to both this coming December. Hence, the breakdown goes like this: 10 Phd programs and 1 MA program in Political Science, and 5 Phd Programs in Sociology. By the way, does anyone know if the admission committee will take it against me if I'll be applying to two different programs in the same university? Good luck to all of us! Cheers!
  2. Hi everyone! I'm also applying to various Phd programs in sociology for the 2011 Fall Admission. I still haven't taken my GRE, but I already have my schedule and currently preparing for it. This will be my first time to take it, and I hope that I'll just have to take it once. Anyway, I'm currently finishing my MA in Southeast Asian Studies and will be done with it by December 2010. I am still not exactly sure where I'll be applying, although I'm leaning towards Stanford, Northwestern, UNC-CH, Wisconsin, and UC-Irvine. Oh, I'm coming from a non-socio background (as I did Political Science for my undergrad and doing Southeast Asian Studies for my MA ) but I'm planning to focus on social movements and political sociology.
  3. hi everyone! my bachelor's degree was in political science and my honors thesis was about how a gender-based social movement emerges and develops in a southeast asian country. as of the moment, i'm now doing a master's degree in southeast asian studies and my thesis revolves around the way collective identity is strategically used by gender-based social movements (particularly gay and lesbian social movements) in the region. moreover, although i took a lot of political science classes, including one quantitative, one qualitative, and advanced metholodogy in my undergrad, I really didn't have any specific area specialization (as my university offers a broader picture of the course). that's why i'm afraid that the admission committee might not see me as a potential candidate. so should i still pursue a phd in political science, or should i just shift to sociology, which has social movements as one of its core sub-fields? i'd highly appreciate your thoughts about this, especially that i'll be sending my application this december. many thanks!
  4. i think i have the same dilemma. my bachelor's degree was in political science and i'm currently doing my master's in southeast asian studies (with a focus on political sociology in SEA). however, i'm thinking of apply to some sociology departments for my phd this december. the reason why i'm thinking of doing a phd in sociology is because i've always worked on social movements. my honors thesis was on the emergence and development of a gay and lesbian social movement in the philippines, and i'm now working on how gay and lesbian social movements employ collective identity as a strategy outside the united states, particularly in SEA (having Bernstein's argument as my initial assumption). with this said, i ask the same questions raised by dienekes. i would highly appreciate your thoughts!
