Your professors/advisors would have a much idea about where you stand. Some great work experience there I agree with kahlan_amnell about extracurriculars. Best of luck!

I am a prior applicant, and I am trying to figure out if I should reapply (in molecular/cell bio). Reviewer 1 gave me both excellents and reviewer 2 gave me very good and fair. I did not receive a 3rd review so I did not make the 1st cut. My reviewer comments over the last two years were not very helpful. I am trying to figure out if I am even competitive (was my 2nd try) or if I was on the border of making the 1st cut.
I think the most recent "fair" was due to my poorly written proposal (there were problems if you are familar with this area). This can be fixed this year, so I am tempted to try again. However, I do not want to spend time doing this if I am not even competitive in the application pool. I tried to get info from NSF GRFP and they werent much help.
Anyways, has anyone receive all excellents and very goods but did not make the 1st cut (have only 2 reviews)? Did anyone make the 1st cut with excellent/excellent and very good/good? Again I am trying to figure out what the 'cut off' was to make the 1st round and if I was close to this. (I know that word ratings arent an accurate way to figure out where I stand but it is all I have).
Thanks
I somehow managed to get one...

They seemed to have liked my variety of experience, though I've always thought of it as "Jack of all trades and master of none"... Very divergent opinions on my Broader Impacts too...
And I think a secret numerical score is likely, because I saw my "estimated percentile rank" when I went to my rating sheets, which wouldn't make sense just based on the 3-level ratings.

Hi everyone, another newbie here - a lot of the comments I've read so far have already been a great help!
I was wondering what you guys think about class projects when it comes to research experience. I've taken a lot of classes where I actually designed, carried out, and reported on an experiment. I have real laboratory experience as well, but a lot of my experience at taking the lead and designing the experiment myself is from the class projects. Has anyone else described something similar in their research experience essay?
Thanks!
Sounds like you've had a lot of good experience to write about! I mentioned one of my class projects in my research proposal essay, because it was an extensive design project that was relevant to what I was proposing - in other words, it made my proposal more convincing because I have prior experience from the project.

Who's moving in to on-campus housing this upcoming month?
axess says that my dorm (escondido village) will be ready by September 12th. Assuming that I move in on this day -- what am I supposed to do until classes start on September 21st?
I'm just wondering what they expect grad students to do for a full week. 2 days will be devoted to orientation stuff (for civil engineering which is the dept i'm in), but that still leaves 5 other days that I'll be really bored.
Was wondering if I should move in a little bit later, such as the day before orientation (which are on Sept17-18th)
What do you guys plan on doing?
I'll be exploring various parts of the campus on my own, so I can figure out where my favorite studying, eating, and chill-out place(s) are and the most efficient ways to get to them... also catch up on some writing I've been meaning to do, just to procrastinate studying for the badass quals.

Hey guys,
I'm gearing up to apply for the 2009 NSF GRFP...but I'm a little confused as to which research I should use for my proposal. I'm going to be a senior this year, I've got tons of research experience, and am currently working in a lab. Should I use the research I'm completing now for my proposal? Or should I simply add it to my list of previous work and find a new project to write about? Do applicants normally pore over the literature looking for areas where they can envision the next step or do they stay within their comfort zone for writing the proposal?
According to my own + friends' experiences + advice from these websites http://www.stanford.edu/~pgbovine/fellowship-tips.htm and http://transientneha.blogspot.com/2007/07/how-to-apply-for-nsf-graduate-research.html, your proposal should have basis in your previous research experience but not simply a direct extension of it. They like to see something more adventurous but realistic and practical at the same time.

I am really confused- when is the deadline for 2009? The NSF website doesn't seem to be updated. Does anyone know?
thanks!
Assuming they don't change their timeline, deadlines will be in the ballpark as the 2008 dates -

I got an HM. It's good for it to be finally over, but it sucks when one person on the rating sheet said you did something good, and another said you needed to work on it. It'll make it a little confusing when I apply next year
Does anyone know how these rating sheets actually work? They tell us very good and what not, but is there actually a secret numerical score that is more specific. From my research before, it seemed like the third rating sheet was like the final decision. Is this not true? My break down was:
1) VG/VG
2) E/E
3) E/VG
I'm a little surprised I got so many excellent in Intellectual Merritt. I though if I had any chance it was for me to really promote my Broader Impacts
PS: Anyone else who got an HM scared they didn't get anything from the email title? I would have thought they still would have written "Congrats!" in the title if you got an HM, but it just said "NSF Notification." I was worried they just rejected me, haha.
A secret numerical score is likely, because I saw my "estimated percentile rank" when I went to my rating sheets, which wouldn't make sense just based on the 3-level ratings.

I also got an HM.
What are the ratings some of the winners are getting on their sheets (# of excellent/very goods/etc)? I got 4 excellent and 2 very good, but the writing in the reviews doesn't seem to be too beneficial for retooling essays...

How much time do you theoretically have to study and take the bio GRE? You can take it (if you have time/money) and then not send the score if it's bad. Your GPA already speaks for you anyway. I think the NSF REU will definitely help, but since they give 3 years of funding over a 5-year period, my hunch is that they will favor the PhD or MS/PhD applicants over the MS-only... but it's worth a try in any event!
