Wanted to submit my results since I haven't visited grad cafe much this year. 2021 Cycle: Unsuccessful, Rejected from UTMB, BU, Columbia, and UCSF. Only interviewed at UTMB. 2022 Cycle: Rejected w/out interview: BU, NIH Georgetown GPP, NIH Hopkins GPP. Interviewed and Accepted: University of Pennsylvania Immunology Graduate Group. Probable Rejection, no interview or comms: UTMB You only need one interview to have a shot to get in!

Very different institutions. Scripps is a private institution and will have much more private funding available than a public institution will have as well as a reduced need to be tied to soft money. Anything you want to learn will be taught to you at either institution. Texas as a whole is much more Conservative than FL (Galveston County overwhelmingly voted for Trump. If that is an issue for you, just remember you'll be there between 4 and 6 years. FL has more sunny days which is great, but both deal with hurricanes... If you're worried about prestige, both are known within their field, Scripps is probably more well known as an institution, especially with their San Diego location being world renowned for Immuno work. Scripps name carried more weight, UTMB is more niche. If you're interested in Academica, your institution doesn't matter, you have to do a Post-Doc anyways.

Applied to both. Both are highly regarded within their field. If a PI has personally reached out to you from one, I would go to that one since the PI would see to have more of a commitment in taking you on as a student. Texas and Florida are also very different places which is something you should be aware of.

Yeah, that's how the PI I wanted to join explained it to me. I'm hoping to do direct admit at this point, but every day waiting feels like I get hit with good news and then bad news the next.

Someone on Reddit said that the PI they have been in contact with said 4 offers of admission have been given at this time.

Yeah. I'm finding that to be especially frustrating since I was just offered an NIH post bacc that wants a decision within a week. Probably going to contact a PI or adcom to get a better idea.

Contacted UTMB today, they said "The admissions committes are still reviewing applications, and most decisions are made by mid-April". That being said, some offers appear to already have been made.

Congrats on getting an admissions from UTMB! Any Uni will be good at training you in what you need to learn, what is most important is how you feel you will fit into the environment. If one school is considered better, it won't matter if you hate your time there. Your mentor is what's most important in your success and if you feel you already have a good mentor lined up at one institution, that is most likely the better option for you.

Has anyone heard back from UTMB? I'm assuming with the terrible storms in Texas we can be looking at Texas decisions being delayed by an extra 1-2 weeks. I was invited to the interview weekend for UTMB today!

I've applied to University of Texas Medical Branch, Boston University, UCSF, and Columbia! The waiting game is building so much anxiety every day.
