  1. I'd still consider business casual. No tie, button shirt, khakis/slacks. In NYC "casual" does not mean the same as some other places. My husband, for example, had to head out to Indiana for a business-casual event, and some people were in jeans and polo shirts.

Also, if you're coming any time soon, be forewarned that we have a LOT OF SNOW right now (/facepalm), so you may want to go with darker pants.

I found out for NY they want business casual. It has been determined, I will be wearing dark pants, boots, a thermal undershirt, a buttoned up shirt, and then a business-y sweater over the shirt. I spent most of Saturday with my oldest sister, who used to live in DC, buying warm clothes so I do not freeze. Still debating on whether to wear a tie

congrats with the interviews! I will also be interviewing at UIUC (neuroscience) in ~2 weeks and they told me to dress casually and comfortably, and to expect a lot of walking. they even went into specifics that "jeans are ok, but jeans with holes are not. please, no suits". i'm thinking khakis will work well, or black denim. as for tops, you can never go wrong with a button up. i was under the impression that UIUC is probably one of the more casual schools. are you going to be staying with current grad students in the department? if so, i recommend you bring both types of attire (dress up and casual) and ask them what interviewees tend to wear.

    good luck!

They told me to dress casually and warmly and to expect to have to walk. I will be likely staying with a current student. It is a recruiting weekend. I probably will wear much more casual pants. I am wearing dressy pants for NY, but I prob won't for UIUC. The Friday is a string of interviews (at least 4) with profs in multiple depts (=multiple buildings to walk to), so that day I will wear clothes similar to NY (but no dressy pants). The Saturday is a research symposium, so I figure I ought to wear as comfortable clothes as possible.

  2. I just got admitted to one public school, with a very nice fellowship. That school is in a swing state, so voting there is slightly tempting if I go there.

My long term goal in life is to one day be able to permanent move back to Los Angeles County (the best county/county-level unit in the country :)). I am currently registered in Los Angeles county.

I will problem figure it out afterwards. One reason I am kind of concerned about this is because I have always contemplated running for political office in California, if I stay registered at my permanent address I'd be less likely to look like a carpetbagger if I actually do so.

  3. I'll bet you a nickle it's overturned before that!

That assumes that is entirely in the hands of the CA-SC, because the 9th punted the standing issue to them. If the CASC says there is not standing to appeal, "Yes on 8" will try to appeal the 9th CC's decision to punt. Basically, "Yes on 8" doesn't care to win, because they know their favor with people has dried up in California, they just want to keep the legal limbo going on forever. Also, no one knows when the CASC will even make their ruling

Removing Proposition 8 at the ballot, will probably be quicker than waiting for the courts.

  4. I know as a Californian undergrad attending a Californian school (UC Berkeley) away from home (LA county), I am legally allowed to vote from home address by absentee ballot. As a graduate student in another state, would I still be able to continue voting from home? I've heard that the fact that one is being paid by the university makes it difficult.

  5. Really? Me too! Unfortunately, my POI said that the funds may not come through to fly me down for an interview. Seems like skype might be my best option for an interview. I applied to CUNY as well, but for EEB. However, the main guy I want to work with at CUNY is in NYCEP as well. Are you combining your CUNY interview with your NYU interview? That sounds like a pretty good plan. If CUNY gives me an offer, it might make it easier for me to come down to NY for an interview since both schools could split the bill...

The professor at CUNY used to a be a student of the professor at NYU, so they have a well established relationship. I don't know who is footing the bill, all I know is that they are working on getting me a flight and if I get one, both universities will be interviewing me.

  6. I got tense... when they were asking me if I had any questions about the program, none could come to mind...

Interview ended in 10 min instead of 15-20.

A few of schools don't do interviews, so hopefully at least one of those don't reject me.

My record is good, but my interview skills are shit...

  7. They are paying for the flight; they pay up to $500 in flight expense, the rest I pay. It would be from SFO to CMI with a lay over or two.

There is absolutely no chance they will move my exam, because it technically does not conflict with my program. The problem is the program prevents me from having any time to study, and I miss lecture on the 11th that contains material that would be on the test. Also, this isn't a school that I am all that eager to go to.

I sent the graduate secretary and email to get some details (who gets invited, does lack of attendance hurt my chances, and if I don't go do I get interviewed in some other manner)

  8. UIUC isn't my top school, but it isn't my bottom school either.

I have contacted with the professor, even talked to him on the phone back in September.

Thursday the 10th appears to be mostly travel

Friday and Saturday is when most of the event stuff occurs.

Sunday will be mostly return travel.

They are having some research symposium where current students show of their research, as well as time for prospective students to be interviewed by the relevant faculty.

  9. I think there is a slight misunderstanding.

This is just a recruiting weekend that they are holding; I think they are inviting pretty much any applicant they deem sensible. I doubt it means that I have been admitted. There is nothing in the email they sent me to indicate that. I don't think they make their decisions until March.
