My *new* theory is that on the 21st, applicants for all panels were notified and they had to respond by the 26th. On the 27th, offers were made to fill in "gaps" where someone from the first round had not accepted. After the response deadline on the 29th, they will almost assuredly be able to let everyone else know that they were not successful.

Ok, great to hear from you all. For what it's worth, I thought it made sense to split the application review over two separate weeks because I imagine the logistics of coordinating it for the first time over one would be difficult.

I'm right there with you two. Since there seem to be about five of us from Physical Sciences and Biological Sciences who haven't heard back, and there seems to be a 1/3 chance or better for each person to be accepted, it would make sense that if none of us have heard back, that it is likely that physical and biological sciences have not heard back. There is a slim chance that we were all rejected and they're waiting to send the rejections until after the 26th but again, it's slim. So my fingers are crossed! I'm wondering if they will release results on Thursday again.

Hello all! This is my first time posting! I received my invitation for interview by the department on November 9th, was accepted by the department on November 13th, and found out last Thursday that I am a finalist for Gates Cambridge with the physical sciences panel! I never expected to be considered and just started doing research over the weekend and from what I found, it looks that in normal years there was just a weekend of interviews - a Saturday and Sunday - one set in Seattle at the Gates Foundation and one set at Cambridge plus maybe some skype interviews aside. Assuming the days were max 9 hours of interviews, with 2 interviews/hour since each was 20-25 min, that would mean around ~80 interviews total for ~30ish places. At least that's my uninformed guess based on information from past years.
