Is this only for full fellows? I haven’t received anything regarding submitting a transcript (unless it was in one of those general emails a while ago)

Im on the same boat, I did not receive a message or email about submitting my transcript. It seems more towards Full Fellow possibly because employers want verification? But does this mean we should submit either way?

  2. I have a question,

if I have been accepted to school A and have been offered GEM Associate and the SIR/accept will them is today AND I accept to school B and I am waiting to hear back from them. Will accepting school A's admission effect my GEM status with school B?

Has anyone received a GEM offer from USC?

Nope, I have not heard from them. I think they will release their information by late april, according to their website.

I want to clarify, if a GEM Fellowship is provided for a PhD, is the stipend subtracted from the tuition for that quarter/semester? Or if the school is already providing a stipend/tuition waiver, the GEM stipend is separate and added to that?

Thanks for all you do :)

I believe if you will get GEM, all tuition will be covered by the school throughout you whole PhD studies. On top of that, depending on what level of scholarship you get, you will get a stipend for certain amount of semesters/quarters.

Hey guys. I am honestly confused by this whole process. I am currently in the final round of interviewing with a company and I am confused on the process of getting selected as a GEM Full fellow. If this company chooses to sponsor me do I notify the University I got accepted to (and want to go to) and tell them a company is sponsoring me and if they will take me on as a Full Fellow? Or as soon as the company gives me an offer they contact the Universities I apply to and tell them they are sponsoring me and the school can decide from there if they will sponsor me? Basically what I am asking is am I supposed to be doing the leg work, the company, or GEM?

Tbh, this whole process is a bit confusing. However, I will explain my understanding of GEM. If you get the internship AND if one the school you applied too awards you GEM, then you will be considered as a Full Fellow. But most of the weight is dependent on the school. The requirement to be a GEM Scholar overall is that a school has to accept you as a scholar, doesnt matter if you got the internship. That being said, it is good practice to let the school you want to attend know that a company wants to sponsor you as a GEM scholar, it can help nudge them to also accepting you as scholar. I do not believe the company will contact the school, so you will have to the leg work. Best of luck!

Hi, a GEM rep at a university I'm hoping to attend reached out saying I'm eligible for the GEM fellowship program. Is this usually an indication that I'll receive an associate or university fellowship? I've been accepted into the school.

Its a good sign, but I wouldnt take it as a definite yes yet. I received a similar email from a school I was accepted to and I contacted the GEM rep and they told me that the school's internal committee has not made a decision yet. I am taking that as a they acknowledge that you applied to GEM and acknowledge GEM has determined you are eligible to receive it. Good luck to you!

Can anyone help me get into contact with the rep at USC? I haven't heard anything from them at all this whole time. And definitely not anything about a waiver. I've emailed about 5 times now. The viterbi admissions office doesn't accept phone calls. Is KH the rep or am I reaching out to the wrong person? ?

Kevin Henry is the rep that I have been in contact with. Sorry if my post caused some anxiousness. I am a different case of accepted students. I had accept by march 3rd to continue. If you applied for Fall 2021 originally, you should be fine.

Not sure which rep you spoke with, or if it's the same across the board, but the person I talked to said that we would not need to pay that deposit.

Sorry, I got more insight. So I am in a different situation. I was accepted Fall 2020, but deferred due to the pandemic. Since I deferred, I believe I was put in a pool of accepted students who deferred that had to sign by March 3. I think if you applied for Fall 2021 originally, you should be fine.

    Hey all,

I had an interview with a GEM Sponsor recently and while they mentioned that they got my information from GEM, it seemed like they were mostly trying to interview me for their internship program. For folks that got interviews, did you all feel the same way? Or was your interview more centered around GEM stuff? Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

From my experience is that the interviews were more geared towards the internship. I did prepare in the case they asked me more about GEM, but they only mentioned that they got my info from GEM, so Im in the same boat as you. It makes sense, you are still interviewing to be apart of their team and they would want to bring someone who they believe meshes well with their projects and group overall. The way I look at it now, GEM was just a pipeline for internship opportunities.

    Anyone heard from USC lately?

I actually contacted them about the intent to enroll waiver, the rep told me that we all had to sign in it to allow more time for us to be considered for GEM. A person has to pay $500 to continue, sheesh, but I digress. He said that they have not made official decisions yet, but too look out for an email from either USC or check the GEM portal over the next few weeks. So tbh, I dont think we will be hearing soon, since there was someone else who said the same thing in this forum like 2 weeks ago.

  11. I am curious if anyone applied to UCLA as GEM university? I contacted the GEM rep and I feel like I am getting an odd response. I asked how will UCLA notify applicants if they university will take them as a GEM scholar. But I was told that UCLA does not choose them, GEM does. But then she tells me to wait for the financial award letter. Does anyone have more concrete details about UCLA?

  12. Can someone help me understand the process of being accepted to a university as a GEM fellow? I remember from the info session they mention that a University has to accept applicants in order to be considered for any level of scholarship? So does this mean, a university has a committee within in their own graduate programs that choose applicants. And ideally, how does a University identify you have been chosen by the school as a fellow?

Hi! Do any of you guys know if you accept a company offer for an employer this means you have to intern for them every summer you are in graduate school? Or is it just this summer? Thanks, and good luck to everyone!

If you are doing a masters, I know you have to do 2 internships with them. If you want to go to another internship, then you will have cancel your whole GEM fellowship

  14. Does anyone know how long it takes for companies to reply to an application or how do they reach out to applicants? I just checked today and it says a company has responded to my application but I havent heard any word from them. If anyone has more insight on how they reach out, that would be great. I dont think the GEM website is that good, so Im hoping I was not chosen on accident.
