I've officially committed to Yale for Musicology! So excited to move out to the east coast. Congrats to everyone and good luck to those still making decisions!

    Congrats!!

Hello and thanks for the reply. Congrats on your acceptance! I received a seperate letter a couple of weeks after my acceptance. I believe everyone is getting a different package though. Tbh, they were a bit shady throughout the process (the stipend amount they offered changed several times as well as the details about TAships and RAships...). If I knew that I could get funding later on, I would not hesitate but the whole process was undertaken really unprofessionally...  Do you happen to know how difficult it is to get external scholarships once you are there?

Thank you and congrats to you, too! That's kind of surprising to hear that the amount and everything changed. I'm trying to give everyone the benefit of the doubt right now since things are so wonky thanks to the pandemic. I honestly don't know much about the funding situation in Canada so I'm not sure. Sorry I can't be of more help!

Hi all. I am international applicant. I have been accepted to PhD in Musicology programs at McGill, UMich, and Stony Brook. I am debating what would be the best choice for me. It would be great to hear your thoughts.

McGill is offering 3-years of funding (bummer!), but the program really aligns with my interests and I would love to live in Montreal. I would defo need to apply for external scholarships (most probably Quebec scholarships) if I go there.

UMich is giving a good package, but it is a very classically oriented program (I am doing a combination of Voice & Gender Studies. Professors generally do not have that kind of a focus as far as I understand). Also, I am quite to used to living in big cities so I am not sure how fulfilling life would be there. Besides, students finish their program in 6 years on average, which I think is super long as opposed to some other unis in the States.

Stony Brook does not have a good ranking though it is good. My research interests align with the faculty, but I am not sure how much I should care about the reputation as long as the program is a good fit. On the downside, I heard that social life was not so great there despite its proximity to NYC.

    Help pls!!

Just curious - were you notified in your admissions letter from McGill about funding or was there a separate letter? I was accepted for DMA composition and am still waiting on funding info. I know it's most likely tight this year.

In regards to your question, it seems like McGill would be the best fit and combination of prestige, interest, and area for you. Of course funding makes some things tricky, but there is definitely external funding available...

Dang, to think someone is clout-chasing on the anonymous Grad Cafe results board...

That does help with perspective, though - I remember at the general info meeting before interviews the assistant dean was fairly vague about when any program would make decisions. Have you reached out to the composition faculty since the interview?

I haven't. Relatively speaking it hasn't been THAT long. But still, I hope we hear back sooner rather than later!

I'm also waiting back for Northwestern composition! I saw on here that someone had logged an acceptance to the program, so I was a bit unsure of the current admissions status; I wonder if they're doing some sort of semi-rolling process, or if that was an erroneous status update (lol).

I really think that one update is not legit...

    Hi Everyone,

Congrats on all of the acceptances that have gone out.

I've applied for a DMA in Performance and Literature at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Northwestern. I got acceptances from UI and UW in early February. Expecting *hopefully* some funding offers in the next couple of weeks from both schools.

I had an interview with the Assistant Dean of Admissions at Northwestern last month and it's been radio silence since then. Was never able to make contact with my POI and they never offered an interview. Does anyone know if we can expect to hear from Northwestern before March 15th? I'm already expecting a rejection, but it'd just be nice to know... the wait is awful.

Best of luck to you all.

I'm waiting to hear from Northwestern for composition and it's my understanding they're taking longer than most years to get results back. My interview was 2 weeks ago tomorrow so I'm expecting any day now...hang in there! The waiting is horrible!

Congrats!!! I am happy for you:) I saw someone posted on the results page that he applied for a PhD and was admitted to DMA. Was it you? I am asking since I also applied for a PhD but haven't heard from McGill yet...Did you had an interview? And, what is the major difference from PhD and DMA at McGill? Good luck and congrats again....

Thanks! Yes that was me. It was contact about switching to the DMA and recommendation for acceptance in that degree. They seem to have updated the info on the website about what the difference is and it has to do with the dissertation and if the focus is on composing or kind of research in methods. I'd recommend looking at the website. No interview.

Congrats!  You planning on going there or depends on others?

I’m still waiting on 6 decisions so uh, any day now...  Of course some of them seem to have a habit of waiting until the end of March to send the rejections.

Depends! I doubt I will make a decision for a while. Good luck and hang in there!

Just got the rejection letter now.

so bad that they charged us the fee for nothing..

    Well, lets wait more decisions

    Good luck u all!

I was waitlisted so they're considering composers. Just waiting to see if a spot opens up. It's such a strange year, we're all trying to make it through. Good luck on the rest!

Saw your "no composers were outright admitted this cycle" results post.

Really not a fan of this.  I know some places don't know ahead of time if they will have any spots at all for composers, but of course that doesn't stop them from taking people's application fees (and then probably never informing them whether or not there was ever a spot).

If you can't guarantee that you will be able to take people - either make it known in the application or suspend the cycle.  Not that I'm personally affected by this school (but who can say about any others?) but still...

I can't think anyone likes this. It's a tough situation for everyone involved, between applicants, current students, and faculty. Some universities are handling it differently than others, but I think we're all just trying to make it through this very strange year.

hi folks - does the harvard musicology acceptance happen to be anyone on here? curious if it came from an individual prof or whether it was in the portal!

I can't speak for musicology but I was contacted on 2.5 about composition by faculty and official waitlist notifications went out 2.10.

Welcome to the forum! Any chance that you've heard from Berkeley? Somebody reported a musicology acceptance on Friday evening but neither I nor anybody else I know who has applied (composers and musicologists) have received anything.

    Thanks!! Nothing from Berkeley yet.

  13. Composer here - applied to Harvard, Northwestern, McGill, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, and Illinois. Interviewed w/Harvard last week, invited to interview w/Northwestern next month, accepted to Illinois two days ago.
