  1. hi @mashatheicebear, congrats on your offer! i think a phd in comp lit might actually be an advantage when applying for jobs in area studies, and i imagine it won't be a problem to research only slavic languages for your degree as long as you fulfill the (probably two) languages requirement. you might also be able to find faculty from other programs to work with. ask. unless you'd be giving up a nice job to take the offer, it seems like a no-brainer: it's the bird in the hand. you could reapply for slavic programs next year if you wanted. (i wonder if people have thoughts on that - would it be bad manners to apply for transfer? i know people do anyway) as for becoming a professor: the market is fucked. we all know it. none of us should expect stable jobs in academia. have a back-up; maintain another career if you can.
  2. Nice! I haven't heard of that program, seems interesting, and thanks for the tip. I'll PM you.
  3. Hi, congrats! I got in as well. I'm stoked Happy to connect. A PoI at a different institution said my project might fit at UMich, and I applied, not expecting anything as the professor I had in mind hadn't responded to my query. Now I've been frantically trying to find out as much as I can about the place. I'd be curious to hear what other folks here think about their program.
  4. Thank you! I looked up other threads and did notice this suggestion, which seemed worth thinking about:
  5. hey folks, unrelated belated worry: does anyone know if you're expected to send follow-ups to POI's or adcom members after interviews? "lovely talking to you" etc?
  6. yes, @harleth, thanks for sharing in detail! my stanford interview felt similarly like a toss up. all questions were of substance and quite specific to my work. i felt like i did okay with the more complicated interrogations of my arguments but like i was losing my words and blathering at the softballs. i just interviewed at u michigan as well, and it was quite different. smaller committee so there was more of a back and forth conversation (DGR and DC plus two POIs, admin assistant and a grad student), and this time i didn't rehearse obsessively so wasn't as stultified by unexpected softballs. they were markedly friendly and interested, and they advocated for their program (which seems exciting). curious if anyone else here interviewed with them? (and +1 with the cornell rej... ?‍♀️ )
  7. hi there! same here - interviewed on 29th, email on the 22nd. i guess we'll hear back over the next week or two? it was a full panel with 8 professors, most of whom share some of my languages and research interests. was it similar on your end? (i'm new here so not sure about the lingo..) good luck!
