  1. Anyone hear from Columbia or Syracuse? It's been over a month since Columbia's deadline and almost a month for Syracuse. I'm nervous and impatient!
  2. Staples tubes aren't large enough. Home depot has large tubes but it says that they allow moisture in (they aren't made for shipping). I could always wrap in plastic. Fedex does not insure artwork because the value is "undetermined". They insure things like chairs, etc. I need insurance for $7500. UPS does not insure over 100 and won't allow additional insurance. Art insurance companies want to make an appointment to inspect or personally package the artwork and take at least a week to ship, super expensive. Too large to bring on plane, oversized limit 62". I'm going to have to take my drawing and wrap around a cardboard tube and then insert into another tube so the edges are protected. Otherwise, if it moves back and forth it will rip or dent the edges.
  3. I am shipping a large drawing on paper, rolled up, to SMFA. I need a large sturdy tube, at least 8 feet long and about 10-12 inches wide. I understand there might be some heaviness but light as possible to keep costs low. Must be sturdy. Where can I buy a large tube like this? I need to buy locally (Minneapolis) due to time constrictions. Also, what is the best way to ship this? Fedex or UPS. Fedex said they won't insure the artwork. So I'd have to go through an art insurance company seperately? Did anyone have to ship their work rolled up to a school? Please help. I need to go buy one today and figure out the shipping/insurance before Monday? My personal assistant/intern did not find out much info about this... :/ Thanks!
  4. I'm signed up on an "art education" mailing list, so I receive notifications of deadlines for applying to grad programs. I see several that have upcoming deadlines for March. I was wondering if anyone knows of the top grad schools for painting abroad? England, France, Italy, Germany? I'm not familiar with any of the schools. I'm thinking of applying.....Plan B for not being accepted into the schools in the US I've already applied for...
  5. Thanks. It says 2010-2011 but assuming probably same faculty advisors since they have been at the school for years. Looking at: Erica Daborn Gerry Bergstein David Davison or Mark Cooper Only other for painting is Magdelena Campos-Pons. I found a page on FB for SMFA 2011 that answers some questions. One of the current students posted that Gerry Bergstein is a "brilliant painter with a mind for sculpture (sculpts with paint)" and is "extremely open". David Davidson - "call something art and he will love it". I found their websites online with work examples and resumes. Overall I've heard the interviews are laid-back but want to select the right faculty to be receptive to my work.....and don't want to be brutally drilled about my art history knowledge, etc like I've heard happens at Yale/Columbia interviews. I can throw out some names and a little bit about influences, but I don't have a direct influence on my work.....so was thinking Gerry Bergstein might drill me considering the content of his work.. Probably shouldn't worry about it, but it's getting close to March 5th and the anxiety is sitting in. Haven't heard back from Columbia or Syracuse yet.
  6. There's a huge list of faculty on the website. Mixed in continuing education, visiting faculty, etc. And this is for 2010-2011. Is there a shorter list of faculty (painting/drawing) for MFA to chose from somewhere?
  7. I have an interview at SMFA on March 5th. MFA (Painting). It says in the email that you can select your preferred faculty for the interview. I was wondering if anyone that has attended an interview or the school could provide some info about the faculty members and/or how they conducted the interview? I'm not familiar with the faculty and would like a little more info than what's listed online before making a selection. Also, anyone interview before - what q's did they ask? I've heard it's pretty laid back compared to some other schools with interviews Maybe I'll see a few of you there in March! Now, for a hotel reservation! (And have to arrange to ship my artwork)
  8. I have an interview with SMFA for MFA Painting. Rejected from Yale. No word from Columbia or Syracuse yet.
  9. Hi. I'm sorry didn't see your comment until now. No I've never visited any of the schools i'm applying to. I was just rejected from Yale. I have an interview at SMFA. Waiting to hear back from Columbia and Syracuse. I've seen pictures of studios at Syracuse. About 300 sq ft and private. Nice!

  10. I have an interview with SMFA - Boston for March 5th - MFA Painting Yale - rejected Haven't heard from Columbia or Syracuse. Anyone hear from them yet?
  11. I was rejected by Yale for painting. I had extremely large scale narrative figurative work, combining drawing/painting. Realistic and anatomically accurate that the figures are recognizable, but done very painterly. So more realistic from far off and loose close up. My work looks better in person than in photographs due to the scale and close-up detail. I had a a very strong statement and my work is developed conceptually, aesthetically and technically. I'll be turning 30 and have been out of school for 6 years. During this time I have worked in my studio full time and run a gallery (management, curating, as well as managing resident artists), I've shown extensively and have had a lot of press coverage. I have teaching experience. So my resume is very solid. My references were strong and even alumni from the schools. I received very good reviews when I went to the grad reviews from several schools when I went for the grad interview day last year. I figured I'd be rejected from Yale. I haven't seen any narrative figurative work on their site or from anyone that's been interviewed or accepted yet. I was wondering, for those of you selected for an interview would mind sharing an image of your work or maybe describing what type of painting you do? And maybe anyone that was rejected talking about the kind of work they do? I'm just curious because I'm wondering if it's worth ever applying again. If they don't seem to ever accept the type of work that I do, then it just seems like a waste of time and money. And also, I'm just curious in general with who is getting interviewed. Congrats to every one that received an interview. I have to admit I'm jealous. But I applied to other schools as well and am waiting to hear back. I think I have a better chance at a couple of them. Although I expect to be rejected from Columbia, since they seem to lean more toward conceptual work and have seen no narrative figurative work. I understand that there are many factors that go into the selection process for the schools. But it is true that certain schools are more conceptually-based and others more receptive to figurative work. Some are more formal while others more experimental...etc. etc. In terms of interview questions - there are a few threads on here that discuss specific questions asked by Yale. Just do a search. A couple are from last year. Good Luck! Don't be too nervous and be yourself. That's what's most important.
  12. MCAD sends notifications all at once. Don't know about the rest....Good luck
  13. Just applied for MFA Painting programs at Yale, Columbia, SMFA, and Syracuse. I saw no point in applying to any other schools since these are the only ones I'd like to go to. I could have went to a local University free in my state with a TA Fellowship but am not interested. So we'll see if I get any interviews! Trying not to obsess about it too much. Out of my hands at the moment. And all I can do in the interview is be prepared and be myself. If they don't like me or my work - then nothing I can do about that either. So try to relax a bit. If it doesn't pan out....I'll be depressed for a while, but will pick up and move to Plan B.
  14. I don't think Syracuse requires in person interviews
  15. I just went ahead and listed the funding opportunities I will need and that I'll be using loans to pay the remainder. Just need to make it clear that I do need scholarships, fellowships, grants etc to attend....or really what's the point of applying.
  16. I finally have all my applications in! Yale, Columbia, SMFA, and Syracuse. I only have to complete the needaccess.org for Columbia and Yale by the 15th. Um, a little difficult to estimate my projected income for the school semester - not knowing what kind of work I will have or how many hours....

    Plan B

I've been thinking of a Plan B in case I don't get accepted or don't get enough financial aid to go this year. I'm ready to go as I've taken a handful of years off and have a very specific focus and direction. But my Plan B is to stay at my studio I have now and continue my work within the art community. I'd try to take advantage of some of the programs and grants that are available in my state that I have not applied for yet. I'd apply to some outside residencies, possibly even in Europe. I'd continue teaching workshops. And of course, developing my work in the studio. I really don't want to wait another year. I'm completely ready and have waited long enough. I fear more about being accepted and not receiving enough financial aid to go. Now... the waiting game.
  18. I'm applying to Syracuse for the MFA painting program. They ask you to describe how you expect to finance your studies when writing your SOP. I'm not sure how to address this? I am very low-income and would like a TA position, scholarships, and grants. And of course take out loans. But what would be the best way to address this in my SOP...instead of saying I am broke, please give me money to go.
  19. Yale Columbia SMFA Syracuse Waiting/Hoping for interview(s)......and expecting some rejection letters
  20. I did not see anything on Yale's site that said we had to put the artwork in chronological order. Guess I missed that, even though I thought I went through everything carefully and several times! Almost all of work was completed in the last 12 months with a few from 2009. I mixed them up. Starting out strong, keeping the middle strong, and then ending on a strong note. None of my pieces are actually weak, but some are better than others. So the "weaker" ones I mixed in when appropriate. I ordered my work to have variety of composition and also show narrative pieces together that made sense. If they actually like my work, I doubt they will pay attention to a few 2009 pieces in the middle instead of the end. Oh well, there's nothing that can be done about it now... :/
  21. Applied to Yale, Columbia, SMFA and Syracuse. ::::::fingers crossed:::::::: beginning to feel nervous about interviews. Expecting some rejection letters/emails. Totally going to cry when I receive it but I think I'll have at least one interview....Now..we'll see if I pass the interview...and then if I get accepted, if I actually will get any scholarships/grants so I can go!
  22. Yale responded through email that my statement was received....I guess it just doesn't show up on the checklist.
