Welp, I am still twiddling my anxious little fingers away. Does anyone here have a sense of how many people are asked to interview at programs that do utilize them? Looks like most of my programs get a large volume of applications, in the hundreds I think… for so few slots, do they interview a group of 20? 30? I imagine getting an interview means you’ve made it to the cream of their crop.

    following…nervous too.

@twosweet and @anxiousbutalive, what are your research interests, where are you applying, and how are you feeling about the app process? Yesterday was the deadline for most programs (i think?), so we should all take a collective deep breath and celebrate! Arguably, the hardest part is over!

Thanks for your questions! Overall, the process is stressful: for one thing, I was trying my best to prepare all the materials; for another, I can't stop being doubtful about everything, especially that if I am good enough. But I do feel relieved too when I submitted all my apps.

I am also an international applicant and want to focus on race and ethnic studies in my proposed sociology programs. I only applied to programs without GRE, including University of Chicago, University of Washington, Indiana University Bloomington, University of Texas Austin, Rice University, UC Santa Barbara, University of Toronto, University of Wisconsin Madison, University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Northwestern University, Princeton University, Yale University, Cornell University, and University of Virginia.

Nervous about the results, but now just want to fully enjoy the holidays :)

To add to this, one of my letter writers had something come up and anticipated her letter being late for one of my Dec. 1st deadlines, so she wrote to me saying, and I quote “I’ve been doing this for 25 years, the deadline is for you not me.” So, assuming the letter gets in close thereafter, I wouldn’t worry about it. Seems likely committees will not begin reviewing anything until they return from their holidays. But definitely don’t be afraid to push if you feel the response from your writer is not adequate!

Thank you all for your thoughtful responses and comments!! I just started to see the letter submissions now. :)

  4. Hi all,

I am looking for advice on remaindering the person to submit LOR. I still have one more LOR needed and just sent that person an email reminder this Monday about the Dec. 15 deadline. Yet, the letter is not submitted at this point even though I got a "will do" response. I think some programs, if not many, are flexible about the deadline for LOR, but I am wondering what I should do if there is no letter submitted after today. Do I need to send that person another email reminder this late afternoon. And how should I communicate with each program about this situation. All thoughts and ideas are welcomed.

    Many many thanks :)

  5. My background is mostly in humanities and communication (related to social science) but has almost zero training in statistics. I noticed that many sociology programs expect applicants have some portion of the statistical background, even from a qualitative scope. So, I am wondering if it is necessary to address my potential or ability to do basic statistical tasks. I also noticed that many programs require taking some statistical coursework; is it a big stretch for non-STEM students? I didn't have any statistical courses during my undergraduate because I was an English major and only had a semester-long SPSS training which was not reflected on my transcript. Any comments and thoughts are welcome. Thank you!

    Hey all,

I know that it is a bit early, but would like to know if any of you plan on applying for Phd programs in communication/media for fall 2023.

As the whole application process is quite overwhelming, it would be nice to connect and go through this together.

If any of you have already been through this process, it would be helpful if you could share your experience and advice. :))

    Cheers!

    Hi!

Same here! Would love to connect and support as needed :). Feel free to DM me.

Hey again. I emailed the department coordinator on whether i should respond by the 15th or after it. But so far no response. I emailed her yesterday. Shall I send a reminder or wait till tomorrow and email the HOD?

Hi, I think you are currently in good shape considering responding your earlier acceptance. That is I don't think you need to respond before April 15, and even no need to respond until they reach out to you first because departments are so careful about the first-round admissions and most funded students' decisions before that date. That means they will have the optimal communication with these students to collect their ideas about their acceptances. I had this situation with several programs in which they told me I was offered the admissions but they also told me they will contact me once the funding is available. I am sorry to tell you that you will need to be more patient at this stage because you are not on their first-round list. One program even told me to wait to hear from them in June, and I think that was just ridiculous. If you can make an international phone call, try to call their department and ask what is going on.

What do you mean "they will stop considering new admissions for Fall 2021 this year" you mean those who are waitlisted for funding do not have to respond by April 15?

I would say unless they ask you to respond before April 15th, you won't need to give them an answer. Otherwise, although you are offered with admission but not with funding, and you won't be able to self-fund (which you shouldn't and they should not recommend that), you will just need to hear back from the waitlist consideration after April 15 but before the fall semester starts, usually known as second round.

No. For those who are currently waitlisted, they won't need to respond because there is no spot in the cohort right now. The purpose of waitlist is for the program to recruit new students when the primary candidates that the program both admitted and funded cannot and will not satisfy the expectation of the admission for that year. Sometimes, none of the waitlisted applicants would be able to enter the program because the waitlist was never given consideration due to the satisfaction of the primary/ first-round admission (usually with funding). April 15 is commonly seen as the deadline for people who are accepted for the first round with funding and other benefits to decide, but often, the program might still accept new applicants doing the summer. For this year, I am not sure how covid might affect this process because it seems many programs have many more applicants than they expected.

Do you think I should email the department head about alternative options or on whether they can provide me with a plane? Or shall I wait till the 15th? Maybe I send out an email tomorrow?

I don't think it will make a difference right now no matter how you contact them because there is no spot available for new considerations at least until 15th. After 15th, you can contact the head of the program and copy your PIs for this inquiry. Also, you want to ask when they will stop considering new admissions for Fall 2021 this year. In addition, you can ask them about any suggestions for the future application. Good luck!

Hey everyone, I have a question for you. I have been waitlisted for funding. However, I contacted the school three days ago and they said no movement on their waitlist yet. If a spot opens up for funding will they inform before April 15th or on April 15th?

I think sometimes, they will even inform you after April 15th because this data was intended for funded students to make their mind. However, the admission may even run through summer.

  12. Hi Y'all!

Hope good news is still coming in! I am thinking having a Slack group for graduate students in Communication and Media Studies. If you are interested, please sign up at https://www.commate.org

Commate.org is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a community for graduate students and emerging scholars in Mass Communication and Media Studies to network with peers and develop their professional experience. Here, people share opportunities and tips for conferences, publications, school/ job applications, and more.

Hey guys, I heard back from Florida State and they said that they are starting their rolling admissions process and should hear from them by April. However, over a month ago I received an email saying that they will shortlist interview candidates and give decisions out in March. Does that mean there will be interview sent out to those shortlisted in March? Or they already did the interviews and now they are just sending out rejections and acceptances?

I think they are still in the process and you still get chance to be invited for interview.
