  1. I sent the smith uni link to my FPA and asked if our university could release the same info. She responded: "You should be receiving an email from IIE regarding your status by the end of the day. FPAs are asked to refrain from disclosing the results until the applicants have been notified. I believe some notifications were sent out yesterday. Please check your junk/spam email folders just in case."
  2. My mentor just said "a watched pot never boils." I told her I'm just watching my email for the Fulbright notification haha.

I just accepted UCR's offer of admission to their doctoral program in political science
  4. I'm on the waitlist for USC POIR too... still haven't heard anything since Veridiana inquired as to whether we would like to remain on the wait list.
  5. Hi all! Have any of you UCSB Poli Sci admits been offered financial aid yet? I was admitted in early March and still haven't been informed of funding. I emailed the department last week, but they were on spring break... Thanks! G
  6. Hello all, I've been wait listed to my top choice for political science doctoral programs. Is there anything I can do to help my odds of being picked from this wait list pool of people? I'm inclined to email my potential advisor, but I'm not sure if that will put her in an awkward position... I've inquired about the wait list: 19 people (which they called short) that are not rated in any order, rather, if need be, the department will meet again to fill admissions from this wait list. Any advice is appreciated, G
  7. I'm also curious why you turned down UCSB? Bad fit? I've been offered admission to UCSB, but the department is admittedly lacking in IR faculty... so I can't decide if it's worth going there.
  8. I'm on the "short" wait list for USC, so let me know, via the forum, if you turn down USC.
  9. Hi all, I've been accepted to a university with a Eugene Cota Robles Fellowship - covers tuition and provides a 20,000 a year/4-year guaranteed TAship. I've also been accepted to a much more prestigious university, but only with full funding (TAship) from the department. Thus, my question is how heavily should I be weighing a fellowship? I've seen CVs where people have actually listed the Eugene Cota Robles Fellowship (I've even see CVs with the Eugene Cota Robles Fellowship having been declined), but should I really go to a less prestigious university just because they are offering me a 'fellowship'? Obviously I omitted the names of the universities since I can be easily identified as the recipient of the said fellowship Thanks! G
  10. Dr. John Ishiyama wrote an article, Training the Next Generation of Teaching Professors: A Comparative Study of Ph.D Programs in Political Science, ranking poli sci programs in terms of how they prepare political scientists to be teachers. It can be accessed here: http://www.allacademic.com//meta/p_mla_apa_research_citation/3/6/3/3/5/pages363358/p363358-1.php Ironically, the article itself does not list the schools in ranked order because it doesn't want to throw anyone under the bus. In my opinion, this renders the article pointless (i.e., why write an article only to fear publishing your results), but you might get some use out of it. According to his paper there are 41 universities out of the 122 programs they looked at that require some sort of teaching requirement/training... but of course those 41 aren't listed.
  11. Hi all, I've applied for the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship and thus my FAFSA must be submitted before January 30, 2011. The FAFSA form allows me to list up to 10 schools who will receive my financial aid information. Should I list all of the graduate schools I've applied to (which is over 10) or should I just list the only one I've been accepted to thus far? I'm not sure if I can add schools later though I'm sure it's possible... I'm just wondering if I should or should not list all the graduate schools I applied to and whether there is or is not a benefit to doing this. Best, Gerri
  12. Hi all, I will be studying abroad (with a scholarship) in the United Arab Emirates in spring 2011. Thus, I will not be in the US to visit schools (not that I have the money to do that anyways), nor will I have full contact (e.g., a phone) with my potential departments. I will still have my email and my family will be scanning me my mail... Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do when I get offers? Who should I talk to? What should I look for? Has anyone been in a similar situation? Obviously, I've applied to universities that suit my interests but since I will be out of the country I assume it will be hard to narrow my choices. At this point I plan on having my faculty advisor help me narrow down my options once I get them. Best, G
  13. I applied to 11 Ph.D programs and 3 MA programs. I received application fee waivers for 12/14. I applied to many schools throughout the country because I found a lot of great departments and in light of the fee waivers it became financially feasible to apply to all of these universities. Cheers!
  14. Hi all, Just wondering if anyone has ever turned down an admissions offer from a university because of the weather in the corresponding area? Many people (both family and advisors) have been telling me that I'll be miserable in the weather at many of the universities that I've applied to. I always answer that I'll go wherever I get the best funding... Thanks, G

    Fee Waivers

Hi all, I'm considering applying for some fee waivers... Does anyone know some general incomes that would qualify for fee waivers? Obviously, each school has different requirements, but I was just hoping maybe someone could speak to average salaries that seem to qualify for fee waivers. Throughout my undergraduate career I've always been claimed as a dependent and now I've heard that I'm automatically independent once I'm going into graduate school - does anyone know anything about this? Can admission committees see if a student is granted a fee waiver? Do they have a negative opinon of fee waivers? I doubt it, but who knows. Also, it seems like most universities want the application submitted before accepting the application for the fee waiver. I'd prefer it were the other way around, but what can you do, right? Thanks, HG
