  1. From what I know from my friend in EE PhD, you have 1 hour to see 10 professors individually. Each professor will give you a problem, and you have to solve/ suggest solutions in 5 mins, then move onto the next one. I heard the passing percentage is ~ %50-60. So it is pretty competitive.

  2. If it is very hard to go from MS to PhD, IMO this is your problem, provided that you have all connections, networking, and opportunities to work with professors.

Abt the info that all PhD Mechanical are funded, thats what I have asked the Dean and the Chair of ME department at Stanford. Maybe they are wrong, I guess...

  3. I went to the Admit Day for MS program last week. IMO, Stanford is amazing, campus is gorgeous, professors are very knowledgeable, very friendly and approachable.

As I did a little survey, most of the students who joined with me on the day are not funded. Some professors do hire TA/RA but it is competitive within a department as well. Still, PhD are all funded. You just need to find the professors who want you to work with and sign the paperwork for you.

However, I've found out that those students who want to go there are very goal-driven. They know what they are doing, and exactly what they can get from obtaining Stanford degrees. I've heard a lot of stories about starting up companies from the current students (MS & PhD). You can also take classes from other departments (law, business, engineering management) as your electives, so I count it as an advantage.

The cost living is actually very high, housing is over $800/ month. Gas is $4.15/ gal. But it is the view from the SF Bay, and the weather is just perfect (for those who are from the east side like me).

Last but not least, the school name says it all.

I just clicked accept on the Axess yesterday.

Good luck on your decision :)

Hey, I've been accepted for the MS program in Stanford but without funding. A lot of people want me to go there but I want to make sure it will be worth it. Firstly, I am keen in getting a PhD. Do do you guys know if MS students who want to continue to PhD have no trouble finding an advisor for PhD? This is the most important as my parents are willing to pay.

But I would really prefer if I can get an assistantship as soon as possible to help me through my M.S. I know Stanford rarely gives assistantships to newly admitted students but how does it look for continuing MS students. Do most of them get funding for MS? What are the chances of me becoming a TA or a RA after the first quarter or at most the second?

What is the course of actions that I should undertake to find a professor for a TA or a RA? Are professors ok with hiring MS students for research even if they haven't completed a lot of graduate course work? Should I suggest doing research for them for credit before asking them whether I can become a RA? Will I be able to find a professor for whom I do research for credit before my first quarter? How about TAs? Are they hard to get? Don't MS students TA for undergraduate courses? One of the professors said he picks from students who take that class...how would that work for undergraduate classes?

  4. I am waiting for this school too... I emailed them for status inquiry and they reply:

    _________________________________________________________

    Dear #####:

Applicants offered admission and who have also been awarded a fellowships will be sent a letter of admission and award by April 1.

Applicants offered admission only, or admission with financial support administered by the department, will be notified as the department makes its recommendations, usually by the end of April for the fall semester.

Applicants who are not offered admission will be notified by the departments as they make their decisions.

    Best.

  5. I am not sure about the UIUC aerospace program. but I've been to Purdue and conducted summer research program over there.

IMO, Purdue is great for aerospace program. They have a very spacious lab nearby school just for space shuttle testing. I've been to their physics lab and visualized the particle accelerometer! It is huge, and could be useful for any aerospace research. Neil Armstrong came from that school along with over 30 astronauts from that school too. I've heard that 3/4 of NASA research lab came from Purdue.

UIUC: I've never been there, cant say more...

  6. I've became so anxious recently waiting for the school decisions... any ideas that master applicants should be interviewed? so far I have not received any thing from the 8 schools I am applying to...

I've heard that PhD candidates are usually taken care first, and then Master candidates... hope it is true... plus domestic students then international students...

thank you for all the feedback!

  7. Thank you for the reponse! I have completed my GRE score: M:800, V:590. I am not sure if the Verbal score is good enough for Stanford. Since I do not have any work published, I want to enhance my chance by other things. Anyone, please let me know if you have any advice!

    Sincerely,

    Phong

    Hi Phong,

I think you have a decent shot with your high GPA and research experience. It would help a lot IMO if you were to get some of your work published. Your GRE is not the most important feature of your application, schools will look at your research experience, GPA, SOP and recommendation letters firrst. However you need to have a high GRE score to have a shot at Stanford - for the Math you really should be aiming for at the very least 780 - many EE applicants will have an 800 so if you get 760 on Math it may not be too impressive for a EE applicant. I wouldnt worry too much about the verbal score as long as you can put together a good SOP.

    Hope this helps!

  8. Hello,

My name is Phong. I am going to apply for the graduate schools and my goal is to get into those top-notched schools such as: Stanford, UC Berkeley, Caltech, etc.

My concentration is Control Systems either ME or EE department, whichever has a better program.

    My profile is:

I am doubling majors in both Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

GPA: 3.95/4.0 at New Jersey Institute of Tech.

I have done a summer research program at Purdue University and have completed 2 senior projects with considerable work as research. But I have no publications at all.

I am planning to take GRE at the end of this August. My expectation is Math>760, Verbal >550

Also, I am an international student and English is not my native language.

I would like to ask what is the chance of my application? I really want to get into Stanford. How does GRE affect my app? What if my GRE <550?

Thanks for your advice so much!
