Hi everyone, I hope you all heard good news or will hear soon. I just wanted to update you that I got an offer from Princeton and will be attending in September. It was a lovely ride here and thank you all for your support and solidarity throughout the process. I hope to see you all as wonderful future scholars!

I'll make sure to write a long and detailed Lessons Learnt when the post is up.

    À la prochaine!

    Congratulations!!!

  2. Dear all, I trust you're having a good and productive week. Since the deadline is here, I want to gently remind you to formally decline any offers from schools you won't be attending (if you are reading this before April 15th at 11:59 pm).

Finally, I want to extend my heartfelt wishes for success to each of you, no matter where your journey takes you. Personally, I'm hopeful that this will be my last admission cycle. Regardless of the outcome, sharing this experience with you all has been a pleasure. G-d bless.

    💚

I need to get this off of my chest. I don't trust anyone around me to be honest, call it imposter syndrome if you want. That's what they say. Take a look at my credentials and tell me what you think.

I'm going for my PoliSci after my undergrad. My top choices are UChicago, Northwestern, WashUStLouis, and Georgetown, among others... I come from a very low-income area, am very low-income myself, and went to a famously terrible high school.

Cumulative GPA: 3.3 (I'm bad with languages and econ isn't easy.)

    Major GPA: 3.7

I published research during my undergrad and now work for the university as a TA and head a research program for undergraduates. I've also done some tutoring for a tough methodologies course. Last semester, I served as an intern at a major government agency focusing on intelligence analysis. Currently, I've been published in an undergraduate think-tink, publication, thing. I'm also on the review board, soon to be editor, for an undergraduate journal.

I have some pretty good recommendations set up as well.

Let me know what you think. What are my odds? Am I finished?

Not to be rude, but we are still focused on our own prospects for this admission season. Furthermore, we do not serve on any school's admissions committees, therefore, we cannot provide you with the detailed insight you are looking for. We've been supporting one another for months on this thread, and I can tell you that folks with better credentials than you have been rejected everywhere and vice versa, so you won't receive the straightforward answer you desire.

That being said, given my personal experience with two admissions cycles, I can tell you that the most important thing Departments look for is a good match between your research interests, the Department's own interests, and the faculty's capacity to advise you. Best of luck.

A query here: Can one get off waitlist after April 15 (16th-17th, for example) or it has to happen by the 15th? Thank you and hope it all works out for you all.

To the best of my understanding, waitlist candidates may continue to get offers after April 15, although this is subject to the regulations of each university and department. Thus, in a technical sense, it is possible; in what way is it possible? It is possible within highly narrow margins. For example, the university that waitlisted me hinted that everything shut on April 15. So, the quick response is "yes," but it can differ.

    Claiming CU Boulder waitlist. ☺️

With the utmost peace and love, I want to ask respectfully that if you were admitted (or even waitlisted) and you don't plan to attend CU Boulder, please inform your decision to decline to the Department as soon as possible since it was mentioned to me that getting off the waitlist is directly related to the people admitted. At this point, I'm almost begging. From the beginning, Colorado was one of my top choices, and considering that, on top of it, this cycle has been brutal, I would really appreciate your kind decision to decline. Please don't read this as a pressure of any kind, just as a considerate request.

Thank you in advance, and my DM's are open for anything you want to chat about it.

Dear everyone. I apologize for bringing this up again. But the deadline is approaching, and I've been on the waitlist for about a month. I would appreciate your prompt refusal if you have a better offer. Thank you once again🤗💚

I'll put this here again, just as a reminder. Thanks. :)

Thanks for your detailed response! It's great to have those insights and direct experience. So, along these lines, I would assume that those invited to a campus visit while on the waitlist theoretically have better chances than no invite -- all else equal -- as it's a signal the waitlist is likely shorter?

I would guess so. For instance, they might have a ranked waitlist, and those people probably are in the top places on the aforementioned ranked list.

    But, again, I'm just guessing.

Anyone with any thoughts on the likelihood of getting in off the waitlist? Obviously that would vary year-to-year, program-by-program, but does it ever happen?

As you mentioned, it depends on multiple factors. Still, according to my own experience on a previous cycle, the two main factors are (1) the number of people who decline their offers on time and (2) how populated the waitlist is. In my experience, the timing of when offers are declined can significantly impact movement on the waitlist.

The first point was debated here in late January; however, a few years ago, a university waitlisted me, and I was in touch with one of the people admitted to my subfield. This person declined his offer on Wednesday, and then I was offered a place on Thursday. I want to underscore that this OBVIOUSLY is not the same procedure at every school; I'm just sharing my experience. It's important to keep in mind that waitlist movement can vary greatly depending on the institution and its specific policies. Additionally, factors such as program size and applicant pool can also play a significant role in how quickly spots open up for waitlisted candidates.

On the second point, if the waitlist is short, you are likely to be admitted. However, if the waitlist is long and highly competitive, your chances of being admitted may be lower. It's always a good idea to stay in contact with the admissions office and express continued interest in the program.

I was waitlisted there for IR over a month ago after interviewing with them. They said they only accepted 2 people. I would assume that is equal across the subfields and all accepted and waitlisted applicants have been notified.

I believe you, and I also believe Georgetown. I just find it weird and interesting that we really don't know how anything works, lol.

OMG….what’s going on with them?!?!? In January, they told me that we would hear about the decisions in “latter half” of February. I even called them and asked about whether it’s necessary for shortlisted candidates to be interviewed while all rejected applicants were not invited. They said “no”. They said that it does not mean that you get rejected if u were not called for interview. So I’m a little bit confused, but I think that it’s highly likely that we will get rejected.

I just remember that, like a month ago or so, someone said that they only admitted two people for Comparative Politics this season, and in retrospect, it was rather weird considering this new information.

However, on the other hand, Georgetown historically has retained the rejections till late March.

At this point who tf knows. I just want to get admitted and this cycle to be over. 🫠

I emailed Georgetown about the status of applications, and received this response:

“At this moment, the admission committee is still reviewing all applications, so decisions have not been made as of yet. There is not a concrete date, but all applicants can expect to receive a status update in 2 weeks near the end of March. Hopefully this helps, let me know if you have any questions.”

This answer is bizarre, because I’ve seen some people on here say they already had their visit days and everything lol. Also, many people have reported receiving decisions from Georgetown, so idk

    Whaaaaaaaat?!

Hi all, I hope you’re doing well. With just under a month from the April 15th commitment date, I’m pleased to say I’ve tentatively decided where I’ll be attending for my PhD. I applied to 15 PhD programs and was admitted to 2, rejected by 11, and have 2 decisions pending, though given my current acceptances I would decline them even if admitted. The two schools I was admitted to were Rice and Cornell. I’m going to be accepting Cornell’s offer, and I will decline the offer from rice soon, to hopefully allow for waitlist movement. :)

    You are the GOAT 🐐

Good luck on everything you do.

Got admitted into Utah. I just received official email from graduate school but provision for funding was not mentioned in the body of the letter. Should I be expecting another mail from the Department on funding options?

If they only informed you that you were accepted, they will send you an official offer/contract later, and the funding should be there. But also you could ask.

Dear everyone, I don't want to be that person (again), lol, but please, please, please, please, if you consider that you have a better option or if you already decided that you won't attend CU Boulder and have not notified the department, please do it. I'm frustrated that one of my top choices is the only school that did not reject me. Still, I also hate being in this position of begging after all this long and winding road of preparing to apply, applying, and getting rejection after rejection.

I wish you all the luck, and thank you in advance.

Question for those on this forum: is there any substantive difference between PhD programs titled “Government” vs those titled “Political Science”. For instance, Harvard, Cornell, and Georgetown all call their PhD programs government. My understanding is that this is merely a name thing. Anyone have any thoughts?

To my understanding, it is exactly the same. And, to be completely honest, it was a bit of a tedious thing to decipher this in order to decide whether to apply or not (I was rejected by all three, by the way, lmao).
