  1. If one isn't careful, such breadth of knowledge can probably be interpreted as a lack of focus -- all arm and no follow through. So the key, to my mind, is to have your personal statement describe exactly how these other fields fit together to lead to the apex of your academic pursuits. It's not really important that the narrative of how this happened be true, strictly speaking, but it is important that it be compelling and feel like a logical progression toward your goal, rather than isolated attempts in different directions.

    Well said.

  2. Whether or not the system is unfair (and I agree with you that it's especially rough on Ph.D students in fields that don't have a lot of outside funding for fellowships, etc) is not a good reason to take advantage of a person (your advisor) or people (your group, team, etc) in it. It's very seldom those on the interface level that are responsible for the injustice, and in this case, it's such a big system that, to my knowledge, those who are responsible are pretty much a "Them". (Incidentally, I don't have a good enough understanding of economics to follow the cause all the way up, so that last assertion could be erroneous).

Edit: So, basically, what Bukharan said.

  3. In my opinion, as long as u get into your new grad program comfortably, the undergrad is going to be more of an asset and "added qualification" than a disadvantage. In fact, my undergrad Mechanical will help me a lot in my Aero program, and even if its not so for others , you can atleast show off ( Man Awvish..ur a pro in Chemistry , English and now ecology.. ..how many people u know of can boast of that? ). I say that we are a more flexible bunch in our pursuits , and we do not refrain from taking such risky, intimidating grad school maneuvers .

Well, I wasn't trying to show off, sorry if it seemed like that.

As to the flexibility, I definitely agree--it takes some courage to switch fields and know that you'll be scrambling for the background you need to catch up with people continuing from their majors. Once you've done that, doing other risky or unorthodox things seems less intimidating.

  4. I majored in Chemistry and English and am just starting my first year in Ecology. Like atmaero, though, I got some experience during undergrad, but unlike atmaero, I didn't know at the time that Ecology was what I wanted to do. For various reasons (social, convenience, etc) I ended up getting a job helping out in an Ecology lab during my sophomore year, which led to my having enough experience to get into an international summer research program (and was I really going to turn down a summer in a tropical rainforest?). I kept working in the lab, and the summer after that I got into another international research program (right, okay, I'll turn down the chance to spend a summer in the Mediterranean) and as a bonus, ended up with a co-authorship. I subsequently took two years off, but when I decided that I wanted to go to grad school in Ecology I was the only one who was surprised, and with the Chemistry background and the practical experience in the field I was able to overcome having (a.) poor Intro Bio grades and (b.) having taken no classes in Ecology during undergrad.

I'd say I'm mostly just very lucky, but a lot of times, if you're switching fields, you're doing it because your target field appeals to you and relates to your interests. This practically guarantees that you'll have something to tie into your statements. Not always, though. Maybe you're transitioning to a new field of interest, rather than what I did (a parallel one) or what atmaero has done (continuing interest but now under its true name), or maybe you're one of those people who gets totally absorbed in what you're doing and doesn't end up with time to develop outside pursuits.

    (edits for egregious spelling--sorry!)

  5. If you are an entomologist, don't you kill a lot of bugs? I kill more bugs for my research than for any other reason, but I guess it's not really gratuitous.

Yeah, I do end up killing a bunch of insects for research...in making that statement I was assuming that it wasn't gratuitous, which is inaccurate in some interpretations. sad.gif Sorry.

  6. Hey,

I have Virgin Mobile now and have been in Ann Arbor for nearly a month. I'd say that service seems to be fine, although if you're deep in a building you may not have it. Anywhere that I'd want to talk, though (like outside) seems to work great, although I don't use data that much. If you're a browsing-mad universal coverage-wanter, it may not be for you, but it suits me fine.

    Hope that helps a little.

    Hi,

I'm bumping this up bc I had the same question as awvish. I'm looking at Virgin Mobile, which runs on the Sprint network, and was wondering how well it works in the Northwood housing area, as well as throughout Ann Arbor and Michigan?

    Thanks!

  7. I'm watching this thread with interest now too, and not just because I love buying school supplies...

For filing cabinets, they look like they can be pretty pricey but craigslist typically has a lot of people selling them cheap or giving them away for free.

I got one at a local (not chain) thrift store for $3. Probably won't use it much, but nothing's worse than stacks and stacks of papers all waiting to steal your time when you try to organize them. And I know myself too well to think I'll actually scan 'em in.

    My $.02

  8. awvish, do you have access to a university? I know that my university has Windows 7, Windows XP and Mac OS installs available for university affiliates for just such purposes.

I will starting in mid-June, but I didn't think they'd have semi-obsolete versions. If they *do*, though, that'd be pretty awesome. Thanks!

  9. I just posted a similar message in the Lobby laptop thread, so if you read that one...I'm sorry/you can ignore this one/please don't hit the ceiling.

I'm looking for a licensed Mac OS 10.5 install (not update) disk to do a clean install on my 7-year-old PowerBook G4. It's the highest this hardware can run, and I'm currently on 10.3.9, which is something of a joke at this point.

All the used and new prices I can find online are pretty high, so I was hoping someone might want to help me out by selling or lending their disk at a cheaper price (I'm happy to pay for it either way).

    Thank you!

  10. Help?

This is along different lines, but I'm trying to do a clean install of Mac OS 10.5 on my aging PowerBook G4.

10.5 (Leopard, not *Snow* Leopard) is no longer available from Apple, and on Amazon and Ebay there are scalpingly high prices. Does anyone have an old (licensed) install disk they'd like to give or sell me? If so, please PM me.

    Thanks!

PS The reason I'm not going for a higher OS is that my computer is of the last of the PPC-type and as such can't run anything higher than Leopard. I figure I'll buy a desktop of some sort soon, but a reasonably non-obsolete laptop (even if slightly rickety) could be really useful.

  11. Hi...

I know I've posted about this before, but does anyone have information on cell phone carriers? I've heard that AT&T and Verizon are good in Ann Arbor, but what about smaller (prepaid/pay as you go) carriers?

    Anyone?

  12. I think the point I was trying to make is that the Moderators need allow a way to report "snarky" users and block their IP. There is no way to report a user, that I'm aware of, but I would gladly do so that others do not feel afraid to post because they'll potentially get "jumped" by someone else.

Sorry, and yes, I completely agree. I didn't mean to come across as condemnatory with my earlier post, I was just trying to pour some oil on the waters.

You can and should report posts where a user is being rude or piling on to someone else.

Now I know what that little button is for--I didn't quite understand before. So if we click it, then it goes to the Mods and you guys look at it and see what if anything is wrong and take action? That's sorta neat....

  13. Hey awvish,

It might work out that it's better to have the bed delivered the day after - ideally I'm thinking I'd want it to sleep on for the first night, but you're right, it'll probably be hectic moving in the first day and assembling the frame might take a bit of work. Perhaps I'll leave the assembling to the next day and just sleep on the mattress the first night. I'll see how it works out. Have you had any luck finding a place to live?

I did! Glad to hear you did, too. Mine's near the Arb, between North and Central...which is another thing--if your bed is late (or you decide to get it delivered the second day) you're welcome to crash there; my house has a guest room (which I assume has a bed). :)

  14. Switch, without advocating 'look the other way' approaches to unadmirable behavior, I think you'll find you won't have a lot of success trying to teach manners to someone who already clearly gets off on abusing his power. Are you morally in the right to wish to do so? Of course. Is it reprehensible to abuse power in such ways? Certainly. Is there anything you can realistically do without becoming a martyr to your cause? Of that I am not certain at all.

If what you feel is necessary to stay true to your own code of ethical conduct (everyone has one, they all differ) is to launch some sort of attack (direct, indirect, obvious, anonymous, etc), then you're the only one who can decide what to do and how to do it. Perhaps it's cowardly to not engage, and maybe it's a copout to say 'choose your battles', but I think that's what Xanthan was saying (Xanthan, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).

Strangefox, I think 'snark' in this case is to vitriolically and at least semi-baselessly attack another's views, work, lifestyle, etc. I think it's also usually sarcastic and has an element of straw-man to it. I think it also connotes to some degree that those attacked are bystanders (or at least that the attack is unreasonable, but I guess I already said that).

Incidentally, in economic circles there theoretically exist varied checks and balances that are supposed to limit damage and skullduggery, but those seem to only exist in academia for written assertions (i.e. peer-reviewed things) or newbies (junior faculty have to watch their step). The relative invincibility conferred by tenure (or vast amounts of wealth) are indeed infuriating, the system is broken, many people have sold out, it all sucks, I'm right there with you.

But I don't think it's really appropriate to blame Enron on Xanthan and Strangefox.

  15. Hi newms :)

Never bought a bed before, online or otherwise, but you might want to get it delivered the day after you arrive? Seems like it could be kinda hectic to try to move in while a bed is being delivered. Of course, I'm able to sleep on almost any surface/have a bunch of camping gear, so that would make it easier for me.

    Good luck!

  16. Hi awvish. Are you an international student? I think most major service carriers in the US works. I have been using AT&T for years and doesn't have a problem in Ann Arbor, lots people seem to have AT&T because I see iPhones everywhere on campus. Verizon is also an alternative, but a bit more expensive. Both have a branch office near campus.

Hi Tall Chai. :) I'm a current Peace Corps Volunteer (coming home this week!), and I've never had a cell phone before. Well, not outside of Africa. So I don't know a lot about them, and don't want to get one with no coverage.

    Thanks for the information!

  17. I'd also be really interested to know which cell service providers work well in Ann Arbor (both in terms of coverage and having an accessible branch office in case a phone has an issue...). Anyone? Anyone? (Thanks!) B)
