  1. I miss being able to procrastinate on this forum before I heard back from all my places and had nothing else to talk about. So I'll bite: PROFILE: Type of Undergrad Institution: U. Chicago Major(s)/Minor(s): Political Science, minor: Near Eastern Studies Undergrad GPA: 3.8 GRE: 800q, 710v, 5.5awa Any Special Courses: Not really. Letters of Recommendation: 1 lawyer/lecturer/program director; 1 historical/middle east scholar; 1 anthropologist/middle east scholar; 1 big name poli sci guy Research Experience: quite a bit: post-bac fellowship ($$ to do research); a few publications; work with/grants from research institute; several international conferences Teaching Experience: none really Subfield/Research Interests: middle east, culture, religion, gender SOP: spent a lot of time on it Other: I hated extracurricular activities. RESULTS: Acceptances($$ or no $$): Ohio State, Berkeley, Michigan, Uchicago (CIR). No funding fom CIR, but 5 year fellowships from the rest. Waitlists: Stanford Rejections: Harvard, Columbia, MIT, Princeton, Yale Pending: Going to: Probably Berkeley What would you have done differently?: My writing sample had absolutely nothing to do with my proposed research interests. I don't know why I thought that was a good idea at the time, but it probably wasn't. Also, I wrote to a bunch of profs before applying, and I don't think it made a lick of difference oddly enough. Finally, I stressed out too much, but that's probably unavoidable.
  2. official rejection from MIT came in the mail today. what a terse letter!
  3. p.s. I grew up in c-bus. hope you liked your years there.
  4. Hey, I'll be at michigan this weekend, and I'm in comparative. What's your story, babaababo?
  5. If profs, let alone adcom members, lurk here I would be seriously surprised. I'm sure they have other shit to worry about besides trying to decipher who rlayla is!
  6. I grew up in Columbus and 24K is HUGE there. You can definitely live uber comfortably. Put it this way: I haven't received my funding offer from OSU yet, but if I got 24K from OSU and 24k from Berkeley, I'd be eating filet mignon in c-bus and noodles and lentils in berkeley.
  7. Once again, schools don't even bother telling me I'm rejected. Big Cheese -- I'm rooting for you!!!
  8. Yeah working in food service does suck (I was a busgirl at a shitty italian joint in high school.) But I feel like it might suck so much that it'll make grad school seem awesome by comparison
  9. for the love of god, HAVE FUN! You already got into grad school, so what's the point of working your ass off? You have the next 7 years for that. Here's an idea: Why don't you get a job? You know, those things that pays by the hour and from which you don't learn anything? Like work at a restaurant or something. You'll probably never the chance to do it again, and it might be fun. And most importantly, you can try to save money for the next decade of student poverty.
  10. Is anyone here planning on negotiating for more funding? I heard from some folks that this a pretty common practice. And while I feel comfortable haggling for my souvenirs in Mexico, I
  11. No! I've narrowed it down, but now I want to get off the waitlist at Stanford and I feel like I'm still in the application process ("Take me! Love me!") Looking forward to visits though...
  12. I'm probably going to turn down Michigan, although I'm not sure. Also, I want somebody to turn down Stanford so I can go!
  13. Yeah i was thinking of those two people too, although I hear chaudhry is really really difficult to work with. I'm much more interested in hassner's work. But then again... I don't know, how are you supposed to choose these things? What do you think about Stanford? I'm on their waitlist, trying to figure out if i should pursue it.
  14. I'm in the same boat, basically trying to decide between Berkeley and Michigan for comparative middle east, and I have no idea what i'm doing.
  15. has anyone gotten their rejections from columbia yet? and is it odd that i got accepted to all the public schools i applied to and rejected from all the private? hmm.
  16. Waitlisted at Stanford. Thanks I guess? In other news, I talked to a prof at Berkeley today and he said that all the top 5 schools basically admit the same 60 students, then fight over them. I'm really curious as to if this is true. Has anyone here ever been accepted to like every top school?
  17. I might be opening the floodgates here, but I'm leaning towards Berkeley, in which case somebody can take my spot at Michigan. Not totally sure yet...
  18. To the folks that got into Michigan -- what were your funding packages like? I just got my letter and it wasn't as good as I was expecting. 15 k for 5 years plus 3k for two summers, but they make you apply to outside sources 4th and 5th years. Did other people get the same thing?
  19. I'm having a similar issue right now. Trying to decide between Berkeley and Michigan in comparative, and I feel like its going to come down to the visits. I think Michigan has better people in my field (Middle East) but Berkeley has a better comparative program overall? Plus its warm? It just freaks me out making a decision like this that's going to affect the rest of my life.
  20. haha, now you know how it feels! Hope you had better luck than I did!
  21. It seems from the results page that Columbia is still sending out emails, although I'm not holding my breath for myself. I'll be holding my breath for you though, BigCheese!
