Hey, friends! I attended the admit session tonight for GW. It was truly inspiring to me (I'm not inspired so easily). The messaging from GW on the importance, at this time, of public health and public health leadership was moving. To paraphrase, anyone can sail a ship on calm waters, but it takes leadership to navigate a storm. I think that being forged during hard times makes for resilient public health practitioners.
Good luck, and take good care of yourselves.
I also work for a university that does not have a DrPH and tuition remission is for them only. There is one loophole that needs to go allllll the wayyyyy to the Provost for approval, but I'll try it out and see if there's any success in it. It's not tuition remission, but it might save me some taxes, legally. There's an AEA evaluation fellowship I'm looking at. There are also a few others that I can't remember. They are not through the program I'm going to.
With my wages and a bit of creative accounting with my institution (nothing untoward). 😕
It's going to be a tight squeeze especially with a mortgage and kids.
Hopefully, I'll get a fellowship or something the second year. I'm looking at a couple of fellowship opportunities, but they require the applicants to be in their doctorate programs already.
Going to GW, too! Congrats to everyone and their decisions. It's bold to stick with public health. Says a lot about character, I think. Goodness and good luck to all of you.
I interviewed at Harvard last year, so it's not the same. But my main takeaways: Be sure to know your personal statement backwards and forwards. Be sure to know UNC's program and what it will do for your career--be more specific than the credential. What makes UNC's program special to you? Be prepared to know where you are headed in your career and why it matters to you and your chosen community. Harvard also cared a lot about my core values and how I differentiated leadership from management/why they were both important. I hope that helps! Very best of luck to you, ChiGirl25!
Interviewed for GWU in November, and it was mandatory (I believe). As interviews go for DrPH programs, it was standardized and--by far--the least intimidating. The admissions person told me that anyone who meets the essential criteria for the program goes through an interview. I don't know what the criteria are, exactly.
I applied and was not accepted to 4 programs last year: Harvard (interviewed), Hopkins, Tulane, and Boston University.
So I might just call it a day and accept. Which is hardly a bad thing. I feel confident and comfortable that GW is a good program for me. Good fit. Diverse fellow students. Policy focus, etc. In terms of accepting, I'm going to meditate a bunch. Journal. Come down from my high of being accepted and make a sober decision.
Let me know if we will be together.
I did, too! If it's NOT a scam, it's one weird way to receive an acceptance. Congratulations? I hope?
Hmaxey, if you did get in, what's your likelihood of accepting?
GWU is doing admissions decisions in two waves. The first wave of applicants are those who interviewed before November 1st, and those will hear back any day now. The second wave of applicants are those who interviewed November 1st and onward, and those applicants will hear back in the spring semester. That's what I was told, at least.
GOOD LUCK, YA'LL!!!! Should be hearing so soon. Fingers crossed that you all experience an aligning to your proper public health path. Un abrazo fuerte.
