Do we need to email scholarshipsadministration@sshrc-crsh.gc.ca or fellowships@sshrc-crsh.gc.ca to indicate whether we accept or decline the award? I read in their website that "Award recipients must accept or decline by sending an email to the appropriate program contact, stating whether they accept or decline, and confirming the start date. " It seems like fellowships@sshrc-crsh.gc.ca  is the appropriate email since it is listed under "program contact"

I was in error there. Thanks for correcting.

Hello Everyone. I'm wondering if you know how I should notify the Council that I'm accepting my award. I have already emailed them but haven't heard back yet.

For everyone figuring out how to accept you may:

    1. Open the result letter (it is one of four letters you would have received from SSHRC).

    2. Scroll to its bottom to the link for Tri-Agency Research Training Award Holder’s Guide on the SSHRC - Scholarships and Fellowships (sshrc-crsh.gc.ca)

    3. Open link and click on through to the guide - NSERC – Tri-Agency Research Training Award Holder’s Guide (nserc-crsng.gc.ca)

    4. Click on acceptance or decline of award. For SSHRC, you need to email appropriate program contact - scholarshipsadministration@sshrc-crsh.gc.ca

    5. What you need to send in the email (apart from file number) is listed under acceptance or decline of award.

    6. Once you email them, you'll get an automated response from SSHRC. Mine said they will write back in 10 days.

    ...

PS: Your institution may have other documents for you to fill in. Mine got to fill in a first installment form.

Wondering if you got an answer on this? I know you can’t hold OGS and SSHRC at the same time. I currently have OGS with a final funds release in May, but I don’t know if I can take the last $5,000 with my SSHRC funding starting in May?

As you note - you cannot hold the two together. Therefore, if you wish to commence your SSHRC award from May this year, you will have to forego the final installment of OGS. Unless there are pressing reasons, it would be best if you begin the SSHRC award from Fall 2021.

Makes sense. She was at the cut off for both.

Also, if it also comes down to the field this person was applying in. If it were, for instance, Psychology, then SSHRC would be skewed in her favor. Around 15-20% of all SSHRC goes to Psychology.

I am not sure about FRQSC.

A friend of mine got the SSHRC doctoral but not the FRQSC this year. Weird!

Why is that weird? The committees for both are different and both involve subjective assessment of applications. In such a scenario, one's application is likely to fall in the hands of a person who appreciates it differently from another. It's perfectly understandable.

Hi, from what i can gather from these postings, the score within committees does not seem to be the final determining factor (I was 16.28/20 rejected, committee 3 Sociology). I assume there must be other factors at play that explain why lower scores in the same committee and same subject area receive awards over higher scores. I don't think it has anything to do with quota numbers to institutions as in the past the quotas relate to the number of applications an institution is able to forward to SSHRC, not the number of SSHRCs awarded to the institutions (this is what was explained to me at my uni anyway).

So really it could be anything, haha. Speculating here, but there might be another review after the scores are tallied, where they make sure that there an equal number of applications across different entry years or demographics etc. I might just inquire to SSHRC out of curiousity. I did think the score was the sole determinant but now I know differently!  Regardless I am so happy for all the award winners and I am trying to give SSHRC every benefit of the doubt as to how they make their final decisions. Naive sociologist here perhaps!

Cheers and let me know if you hear any explanation of how scores matter (or don't!)

I was also struck by this - two people put up scores their scores for sociology, and that with the lesser score seemed to have got the funding. However, I am putting it down to:

    1. One of them misreading or mistyping their score here, or

    2. One of them mistyping their subject (people from different education systems often seem to jumble anthropology with sociology).

However, if it were me, I would write to SSHRC and seek a clarification.

    18.93 - Law

Hi everyone, i am a first year law PhD student. I have received the CGS-D with a 18.93/20 in Committee 5.

My details: I have 8 years of teaching experience in my field, extensive conference experience, strong recommendations, few peer reviewed publications, double Masters (straight As in both).

I have come late to the PhD world so it was possible for me to build up this profile which I understand is not the situation of most applicants. Congratulations to all who have been awarded fellowships this year! I guess experience eventually counts so keep at it (go for grad conferences, put yourself out there, publish if you can).

All the extranet login info came at the same time as the results.

I was rejected as well, with 14.24. Looks like the bar is higher this year. Can people who were accepted post their scores?
