If you want something future proof then go with a desktop computer. If you definitely want a laptop then I'd go with a brand that allows for RAM upgrades (e.g., the Dell XPS 15 line). Some of the larger datasets will require around 32gb of ram in R, especially once you start dealing with longitudinal data.
